Made Home Here After Retiring From Business
Harvey G. Shaffer, age 65, years passed away Christmas night at a Miami, Florida,
where he has been since December 6, from a stroke of paralysis.
The remains will be kept at Miami until warm weather when burial will be in the Crown
Hill Cemetery, Indianapolis.
Mr. Shafer was a former vice-president of the Marmon Motor Company, Indianapolis,
having retired in 1924. Sine that time he had made Culver his home, where he had
been a summer resident on East Shore Lane for a number of years.
Active as a Citizen.
A man of unusual energy, he had identified himself here with many community activities,
the present modern and complete fire truck being his outstanding project. He spent
many months aiding the fire company secure private subscriptions that made the
purchase of the equipment possible, donating a generous portion himself, and then
dealt with the manufacturers so that a low price was quoted in the deal.
Mr. Shafer took a great pride in improving East Shore Lane and his own lake property,
a few years ago he bought the lot formerly owned by J. Saine & Son at the corner of
Main and Jefferson streets, tearing out the old building, and a modern service station
was erected on the site.
He is survives by the widow Mrs. Nettie M. Shafer, a son, Maurice S., his mother and
two sisters, all of Indianapolis - Dec. 27 1933 - Culver Citizen
Last Rites Saturday For Harvey G. Shafer
Funeral services for Harvey G. Shafer, age sixtey four, who died in Miami, Fla. Decemeber
25, 1933, were whled Saturday afternoon at the Flanner & Buchanan mortuary, Indianapolis .
The Rev. Jean S. Milner, pastor of the Second Presbyterian church, officiated and burial was
in Crown Hill cemetery.
Mr. Shafer, a life long resident of Indianapolis, formerly was hte vice-president of the Marmon
Motor Car Company. He was associated with that company and its predecessor, the Nordyke &
Marmon Compnay for thirty years. He was also superintendent of transportation for the
INdiana state highway commission about nine years ago.
He retired from active business several years ago and has spent his summers at Lake Maxinkuckee
and the winters in Flordia
Mr. and Mrs. W. O. Osborn attended the funeral and services Saturday and remained in
Indianapolis until Monday evening to confer on business affairs of the Shafer estate. -
