Doris M. Domiter
Doris Domiter, age 83, of Oshkosh, passed away on Wednesday, January 27,
2021 after a long courageous battle with Parkinson's Disease.
She was born on January 20, 1938 in the Township of Crystal Lake, Marquette
County, a daughter of Arthur and Ella (Bartz) Kanneman.
She married Steve Domiter on November 30, 1963 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church
in Wautoma with a reception at the Bel Aire Supper Club in Green Lake.
Doris grew up outside Neshkoro on a 500 acre farm. She came from a large
family of 18 children. In 1945 they were the largest family in the United States,
with all single births and with the same Mother & Father.
She went to Powers School, which was a one room school house, Neshkoro Grade
School; Westfield & Wautoma High School. She graduated from Wautoma High School
in 1955.
Doris worked at "Teen Town" which was a hamburger joint and pool hall while
she attended high school. After high school some of the seasonal places Doris
worked were The Chicago Pickle Factory in Redgranite, Green Giant in
Ripon, Miles Kimbel in Oshkosh, Fabrico in Green Lake, Handicraft in Princeton
& Lamskin in Berlin. Doris lived in the larger city of Kenosha for a short time and
worked for Simmons Company. During this time she attending Patricia Steven's
Career College in Milwaukee becaming a professional model.
In 1963 she met
Steve Domiter
at The Pink Elephant in Berlin. He was on a fishing trip, up from Harvey, Illinois. They met
in July & married in November.
She moved to Calumet City, Illinois after marriage and had two children, Richard
& Sheila Domiter.
She enjoyed vacations to the Everglades, the Bad Lands, Black Hills, Mt. Rushmore,
Yellowstone National Park, Glacier National Park, Flin Flon, Niagra Falls & Mackinac I
sland. Every year Steve got five weeks vacation. They would be spent, either Traveling,
at The Splitek Family Farm; visiting family in Wisconsin, or at The Family Cottage on
Lake Maxinkuckee in Culver, Indiana.
Doris was a stay-at-home mother & wife until Steve retired from Wyman Gordon
after 44 years of service.
She worked for the Mayor of Calumet City, Illinois doing various jobs until building a
new home in Oshkosh and returning to Wisconsin.
Doris lost Steve to stomach cancer in 2001.
She then took the time futher develop her self taught painting talent. She became skilled,
and mastered acrylic & oil painting. Occasionally she would teach others at The Senior Center
in Berlin; had a public showing of her work there.
Doris had a love for all the finer things in life, shopping and TJ Maxx. She was eccentric in
her presence, fashion forward & clever in and about the different things she appreciated. She
was hardcore with her no frill opinions and spunk.
Doris was very giving of her love & time to children. She was an intelligent, articulate,
detailed, fierce woman ahead of her generation, leaving an imprint on many.
Doris collected Elephants, loved The Rolling Stones and played lots of Canasta. She once also
got six Yahtzee's in one game. Her favorite movies were "Dr. Zhivago" & "Sling Blade".
Doris was a delicious cook; known for her Bananna Bread, Baked Beans, Potatoe Salad, Spaghetti,
Jello and Kolachy Cookies. The things Doris would do, she would always make sure to coin as her
own and take credit for, then say, "Plus one for Doris" Doris Mary Domiter had a lot of "Plus one's"
Doris is survived by her son, Richard (Tracey) Domiter of Oshkosh; daughter,
Sheila Domiter of Chicago, Illinois; 3 grandchildren, Steven Domiter, Lynsey
Domiter, Lacey Domiter; One brother, David (Karen) Kanneman of Ripon; other
relatives & friends.
Doris was preceded in death by her husband Steve in 2001, her parents, 9 brothers, Ralph, Harold,
Lester, Elmer, Donald, Harvey, Earl, Arthur and Roger; 7 sisters, Hilda, Alice, Avis, Helen, Edna,
Ethel and Shirley.
At this time, due to the restrictions of Covid-19, Doris Mary Domiter shall be laid to rest in a
private ceremony at Sacred Heart Cemetery, 2747 Knapp St. Road, Oshkosh, Winnebago County, Wisconsin.
In the near future there will be a "Celebration of Doris's Life" Date to follow. We
want those coming to feel safe attending.
