O'Conners Greenhouse
O'Conners Florist for Nine Years
For nine years O'Conners Greenhouse of 1010 South Main Street, Culver has been owned and operated
by Mrs. John O'Conner, who purchased the greenhouse from Mr. and Mrs. Ira. Mc CLain in 1942.
The building housing the business was built in 1931 by the McLains and since then a front and a
basement has been added. McCLain built the business but was forced to retire in 1942 because of ill
health. In 1943 McClain died, being survived by his wife who is 83 years old, and a resident of Culver for 50 years.
Hobby Develops
A hobby of planting vegetables directed Mr. O'Connor to the greenhouse business and a demmand for corsages in the
Culver area soon caused the branching into a foral business.
Both Mr. and Mrs. O'Conner have ten years of experience in the foral business and both are graduated of the
Brights School of Floristry in Chicago. Mr.O'Conner lived in Plymouth for three years while working
for Arthur Thomson and his construction agency.
Moved to New Home
When the couple adopted two boys (one is in his thrid years at St. Joseph Prep school in Kentucky, and the
other is a student at Culver High School) they decided to move to a home with more land and the vegetable
planting hobby came soon afterward.
Mrs. O'Conner was born in Tippecanoe and lived in Old Mexico for eight years, and although she broke her back
several years ago, the shop has never ceased to be open for business.
