She was born Aug. 12, 1898 in Cass county to Jay Warren and Elizabeth Barr Bates.

On April 20, 1924 in Detriot, Mich. she was married to Lester H. Powlen who died iApril 24, 1975.

She was a member of the Indiana creek Christain Church and as graduated from Valparaiso University. She had been active in the former Cass County YWCA and had served on the board. She had also been active in the Cass County United Fund and Firt Mother's Study Club.

Also surviving are two daughters Harriet Powlen Slaughter, Logansport; and Joan Powlen Kennedy The Village of Homer, N.Y.; a son L. J. Powlen Jr. Hagerstown, Md.; a sister Mrs. James D. Frushour, Lucerne and several grandchildren

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in Harrison-Metzger Funeral Home.

Burial will be in Indian Creek Christain Cemetery

Harriet Elizabeth "H.P." Powlen married 1949 Logansport, Indiana Roy Carlton Slaughter Jr.

Harriet Powlen "H.P." Slaughter, 88, Logansport, passed away at 3:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 3, 2014, at WoodBridge Health Campus.

Harriet Elizabeth Powlen was born in Memorial Hospital, Logansport, on March 5, 1926, to Hildegarde Gates Powlen and Lester James Powlen.

She lived in Lucerne, where she attended Lucerne School until she was 8 years old at which time the afmily moved to Logansport. Harriet was a 1944 graduate of Logansport High School and a graduate of Gulf Park College for Women, Gulf Port, MS where she received her degree in government and political science.

She was a member of Delta Alpha Sigma, social sorority, and Phi Theta Kappa, scholastic honorary society. She later attended Indiana University and earned her Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in Education.

After graduating from G+ulf Park, Mrs. Slaughter was employed at the Pentagon in Administration. Upon returning to Indiana, she was employed as a buyer for L.S. Ayres in Indianapolis. While in Indianapolis, she met and married Roy C. Slaughter II.

In 1957, she obtained her brokerage license and was a stock broker for Investors Diversified Services. Beginning in 1965, Harriet taught third grade at Columbia Elementary School until her retirement in 1990. "Mrs. Slaughter" loved teaching and positively impacted many of her students. She was well-respected by her fellow teachers and administrators.

She remained in contact with many of her students until her passing. Harriet, in addition, received recognition as "Teacher of the Year" while she taught in Logansport.

After retirement, Harriet lived in Kalamazoo, MI for fifteen years, while continuing to visit and maintain the family homestead built by her great grandfather in 1858. While living in Kalamazoo, she was active with Kalamazoo Art Association, Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra, and Western Michigan University's l iterary program.

Harriet was also active in various local civic organizations. She was active with the Chamber of Commerce, was an officer with Tri Kappa Sorority, and was a board member of the Cass County Historical Society. In addition, she was a board member of the Indiana University Alumni Association and served as treasurer for over two decades, Harriet received the Presidents Award for Support of Indiana University and also served on the Indiana University-Kokomo Advisory Council. She was a Trustee for the E.F. Wildermuth Foundation. Harriet served on the Board of Directors of the Logansport Art Association for several years, and was on the Public Relations Committee for the Logansport School Corporation. She received the Business and Professional Women's "Woman of the Year" award in 1971. Harriet was a member of the Little Turtle Waterway and attended Calvary Presbyterian Church and Indian Creek Christian Church. Harriet was an avid storyteller, especially on road trips. She enjoyed traveling, attending Indianapolis Motor Speedway events and IU ball games, as well as tending her flower gardens. Harriet was a loving mother and an endearing grandmother and is survived by two sons, Roy C. Slaughter III, and Jonathan D. Slaughter, both of Bloomington; two grandsons, Roy C. Slaughter IV, Atlanta, GA, and Matthew P. Slaughter, Royal Center; a brother, L.J. Powlen, Jr., Hagerstown, MD.; her daughter-in-law and close f riend, Connie Slaughter, Logansport; and three nieces, three nephews and extended family members.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Leslie Joan Powlen Kennedy. Harriet touched the lives and hearts of many people, setting an example of learning and caring that never ends. She will be deeply missed.

Lester James Powlen Jr., 87, of Hagerstown, Md., passed away Monday, April 11, 2016, at Homewood Nursing Home at Williamsport.

Born Thursday, Aug. 23, 1928, in Lucerne, Ind., he was the third child and only son of the late Lester James Powlen Sr. and Hildegarde (Gates) Powlen.

He attended Culver Military Academy in Culver, Ind., and graduated in 1946 from Logansport High School in Logansport, Ind. In 1950, he graduated from Indiana University in Bloomington, Ind., with a Bachelor of Science degree in business.

After graduating from college, Les was employed by Powlen Cadillac-Oldsmobile from 1950 to 1957.

From 1957 to 1963, Les was in the U.S. Army, where he served as a helicopter pilot and retired with the rank of major.

After retiring from the military, Les and family moved to Baltimore, where he worked for Alban Tractor.

Les also served as an officer in the U.S. Army Reserves from 1963 to 1977.

In 1972, he opened Powlen Equipment Company Inc., which he owned and operated until his retirement in 2003.

Les was a member of First Christian Church, where he served as deacon, elder, trustee and a member of the Christian Heirs Sunday school class.

He was a member and past president of the Hagerstown Exchange Club; past president of the Salvation Army Advisory Board; member of the Northeastern John Deere Industrial Dealers Association, where he served as past president; member of John Deere Insurance Board; Rose Hill Cemetery Board of Directors' trustee; and the BPO Elks 378.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mary Margaret (Heckard) Powlen; one daughter, Julie Ann Powlen Toth of Hagerstown; three sons, L. James Powlen III of Stafford, Va., David C. Powlen and wife, Carole, of Charlotte, N.C., and Michael J. Powlen and wife, Adrianne, of Denville, N.J.; and nine grandchildren, Stephanie, Christopher, John, Andrew, Megan, Morgan and Jacob Powlen, and Matthew and Zachary Toth.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Leslie Joan Kennedy and Harriet Powlen Slaughter; and a son, Matthew John Powlen.

A celebration of life will be held Monday, April 18, 2016, at 11 a.m. at First Christian Church, 1345 Potomac Ave., Hagerstown, with the Rev. Jake M. Caldwell officiating. The family will receive friends at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown on Sunday, April 17, 2016, from 1 to 4 p.m.

Interment will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Hagerstown, on Monday, April 18, 2016, at 2:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to First Christian Church, 1345 Potomac Ave., Hagerstown, MD 21742.
