Schuyler Colfax Shilling
We have With Us Today....
Schuler Shilling - Mr. Shilling's early days were spen in Starke county, where he was born,
attended school, taight school and engaged in business and farming. He and Abe
Lincoln vae at least one thing in common - both were born in a log cabin.
Mr. Shilling alson arttended Valparios University and Bryant & Stratton Business college in
Indianapolis.
His first business experience was with the Keller store in North Judson as bookkeeper and
Cashier, a position he held for fourteen months, during which time he was married.
The he formed a partnership with his brother and engaged in farming the old homestead
and 1,000 acres in the Kankakee bottoms. After 10 years the partnership was disolved and
and Mr. SHilling continued for five years to farm the homestead. In the fall of 1900 he sold
the farm and moved to Knox.
On August 1m 1901, he purchased the
Exchange bank, a
private institution then which lat made a state bank, which span of years makes him
the second oldest from the point of continuous business in Culver, the Number one
post going to
W. S. Easterday.
Running a bank in those days was no bed of roses, and Mr. SHilling had to sell life
insurance to make hoth ends meet.
People had the habit of going to larger towns to borrow money, with the result that the
Culver bank did not pay any interest on deposits for six years. The in became the first
in the county to pay four per cent.
There is a quite contrast b etween bank's business of 1901 and 1939; deposits then
were $18,000 - today they are $2,410,492.44; lians were $11,000 - now are $1,945,153.52
a grow in business that few men in a small town have ever experienced.
During the first four years the bank doubled its business and insurance became a sideline
rather the main source of income.
In thoses days
the bank was in
the building now occupied by the SMith SHoe shop, and in 1907 moved into its new
quarters in the
present location
which building was remodeled several years ago.
Mr. Schilling recalls how he bought the land where the
library now stands to keep
undesirable business away from the
church.
Mr. Shilling served a term in the state lefislature staring in 1918, one term on the town board,
on the War Fund Board for the townoship, and has been instrumental in securing many
improvements for the community, including 25 miles of gravel roads, known as the SHilling
roards.
He also helped start the first
library and for
several years furnished the rooms in the
Dr. Rea Building until
the library required larger quarters.
He is now president of the
State Exchange Bank, the board of directors, and the
State Exxchange Finance
Company.
