Months have elapsed since five bandits mad a desperate attempt at
robbing a bank at Culver, where Lake Maxinkuckee is locater.
In the effort bu the aroused citizenship of Culver ot capture these
Bandits a highly respected merchant named RUssell Saine was mortally
wounded.
One od the five bandits escaped; the other four were for a while held
for seafekeeping in the state prison at Michigan City, then returned to
the Marshall county jail at Plymout, and now confined in the Kosciusko
county jail at Warsaw.
By change of venue the trial of these misccrants was to b egin May 2.
Evidently these outlaws have friends of some sort who command sufficient
means to empluy the most successful criminal lawyer in the Norewast. Among
these is the famous Chicago Socialist Clarence C. Darrow.
Other engagement h indered Darrow from embarking in the defense May 2, so
a postponement of the trial until May 10 was obtained.
If the bank robbery and murder had occured in Canada these outlaws would have
been tried and convicted long ago. In all all probablity they would of been
hanged or electocuted before this.
It is this abominable delay in bringing criminal to justice that is largley
responsible for the appalling criminally in out country
Doubtless Mr Darrow will do his utmost to set these bandits freeon some
techincslity that they may again enter upon the "business" of killing
people while rallying forces to degense of life and property - May 6
