Lake Maxinkuckee Its Intrigue History & Genealogy Culver, Marshall, Indiana

David H. Smith

David H. Smith is almost 100 per cent product of Union township for he was born here and has spent all his years in this community except for a year and a half in Rochester.

He attended school at Poplar Grove when the teacher was paid by subscription. He took up the mason trade as a young man and followed it until 1901 when he became Culver's first rural mail carried. He retired from this to establish a harness and shoe repair shop, Sept. 22, 1912 and remembers his first day's receipts totaled $5.

He was joined in the business by his son, Cecil, August 1, 1922. With the passing of old Dobbin the harness business was discontinued in 1926. For eight consecutive terms he was elected town marshall, served two terms on the school board, 11 years, as township trustee - - a most usual record. Worshipful Master of the Masonic Lodge, and filled every office except that of pastor in the Grace Reforme church, of which he is now trustee.

He recalls as his happiest moment when he bought the old family farm. His father was killed in the Civil War and the widow was forced to give up the place, but Mr. Smith always dreamed that some day he would repurchase the farm. When he bought the farm in 1923 the realization was not as great as the anticipation for most of the friends and childhood associations with the place were gone and so he later sold the farm.

Mr. Smith is shown here with the token of appreciation presented him last week as related elsewhere on this page.

A Rural Carrier Resigns After a service of 12 years on route 14 D. H. Smith has resigned and will leave the government employ on Aug. 1. He is, in fact, off duty now as he is taking his anuual 15 day vacation. Mr. Smith's resignation is due entirely to the fact that the work of the lake route has become too heavy, aud the de-at partmeut declines to give him an assistant. When he took the route in November, 1901, the number of pieces delivered and collected was 2,200; in June, 1913, it was 22,000, and this will get larger as the season advances. Mr. Smith requests the Citizen to say that he will always entertaiu the pleasantest memories of his patrons who have always treated him with consideration. He will hereafter devote his entire time to his shoe repairing. A bonded substitute will carry a successor is made. the route until an appointment is made - Jul 17 1913 - Citizen

From, One Township's Yesterdays:
DAVID SMITH came in the 'fifties to the region east of Lake Maxinkuckee. He took up land from the government. The farm that he so entered is the one now occupied by ERNEST E. BENEDICT. In the 'seventies, there were forty acres in the name of the D. SMITH Estate, east of Maxinkuckee on the township line. David's father, CHARLES SMITH, lived in Green Township, while David was just over the line in Union.

CHARLES SMITH was the grandfather of DAVID H. SMITH, Township Trustee and business man of Culver. David was his father.

The younger "Dave" was born near the eastern boundary of the township. He had small advantages as a boy, and his formal education comprised about three years all told of our present-day type of schooling, in a quite primitive form, however. He studied penmanship under an instructor who came around and conducted "night school." Dave did very well at this and won a prize for his work.

Just before Dave was born, his father went off to serve in the Civil War. That was in '64. The Smith family were living in Union Township at the time.

Dave never saw his father. Much responsibility fell to him after his father was gone. He had a great deal of the work on the farm to do then, just as soon as he was old enough to make himself useful. And he began real young. Later he broke away from farming and engaged in several different enterprises. He became a contractor and built, among other structures, the Rutland schoolhouse. He remembers when the Nickel Plate Railroad was being built.

    D. H. SMITH was born seventy years ago in Union Township and is still alert and active in civic as well as church, social and business affairs.

NATHAN CLIFTON, who has been mentioned hitherto in our history, married a sister, POLLY SMITH.

    Obit
Mrs. Ilda (ALEXANDER) SMITH, daughter of Ike ALEXANDER, died last Tuesday night. She had been married but a short time over a year, when the angel of death came and carried her away.

The services were held in the Baptist church. We sympathize heartily with the friends and relatives who have been brought to mourn the loss of one full of life and vigor, but we must all sooner or later succumb to the inevitable.
