Cecil R. Smith, one of Culver's most substantial citizens and a leading business mand here
for 37 years, died Tuesday afternoon, Dec. 24, at the home of his mother, Mrs. David H.
Smith, following an illness of several months.
Mr. Smith, following major surgery several weeks before, had returned here from the
Methodiat hospital in Indianapolis last Sept. 20. He did not regain his health as expected
and was forced to give up his Main Street buisness even on a part-time basis.
As a mark of respect Culver merchants closed their extablishments to attend Mr. Smith's
funeral services Friday afternoon at the Grace United Church where Dr. Meredith J.
SPrunger, pastor officiated , Internment was at the Culver Masonic Cemetery.
Born near Culver on Jan. 31 1895, Cecil Rue Smith was graduated from the Culver High
School and attended Heidelberg College at Tiffin, Ohio.
In 1920 he joined his father David H. SMith, as a partner in the D. H. Smith & Son shoe
repair shop, which he owned and operated after his father's death in 1946.
The late Culver merchant was active in the Grace United Church and held all of its
various lay offices during his lifertime. He also belonged to the Culver-Union Townshi[
Chhamber of Commerce and the Lake Maxinkuckee Association.
His greatest activity and interest, however, was in the Masonic Order. A past master of
Henry H. Culver Lodge No. 617 F & A M. Mrs. SMith was devoted to the Scottish Rite
32nd degree) and the the Shrine. She was the offical ambassador in this area for the
Shrine and did much to aid that Masonic organization's notable work in behalf of
crippled children and the magnificent hospitals built for ther care.
Mon May 18, 1920, Cecil Smith was united in marriage to Miss Lola Schultz of Clarke Hill,
Ind. who survives him. In addition to his mother, Mrs. David H. Smith of Culver, he is
survived by a daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth Householder of Cleveland, Ohio; a sister Mrs. Ethel
Zechiel of Culver; a step-brother, Rex Mawhorter of Culver; and a Grnadson.
