E. Gurney Mann, 68, Dies; Leader In Florist Industry

E. Gurney Mann, chairman of the board and treasurer of E. G. Hill Co., Inc., and one of the recognized leaders in the U.S. florist industry, died Tuesday at Reid Memorial Hospital after a short illness.

He was 68. Mr. Mann served as president of E. G. Hill Co., Inc., from 1953 to 1974 and president of Stuart Mann, Inc., from 1968 to 1971.

Mr. Mann pioneered in the constant and continued betterment of new rose varieties. He was named to the Floricultural Hall of Fame, highest honor of the floral industry, n 1969 by the Society of American Florists, an organization he headed in 1956-57. He was also a past president of Roses, Inc., an association of" professional greenhouse rose growers.

Local Native

A Richmond native, he was the son of Earl H. and Mary Hill Mann. He was the grandson of E. G. Hill, widely known rosarian and founder of E. G Hill Co., Inc.

He was born Feb. 22, 1906 and attended local schools until 1921, when he enrolled in Westtown School, Westtown, Pa. He was graduated from Cornell University in 1927 with a bachelor of science degree.

As a hybridizer of roses, he was credited with the tests and development of the world-famous "Forever Yours" rose. Other significant varieties credited to Mann are "Snowsong," "Junior Bridesmaid," "Little Leaguer," and "Jack Frost."

He was a director of Hill Floral Products, Inc., and director and treasurer of the Florists Mutual Insurance Co. of Edwardsville, Ill., and had been chairman of the Society of American Florists Endowment.

He resided at 809 Henley Road South.

Active in civic affairs, he was general chairman of the $750,000 Reid Memorial Hospital campaign in 1948 and served as a member of the board and its president from 1954 to 1965. He also took part in campaigns for Earlham College and the old Community Chest.

Headed Aviation Board

He formerly was president of the Board of Aviation Commissioners and was a lieutenant in the Civil Air Patrol (CAP) in the early 1940s.

He was a director of First National Bank, a member of Forest Hills Country Club and the Maxinkuckee Golf and Country Club.

He was a member of Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity, Pi Alpha Xi, an honorary floricultural fraternity, and Sphinx Head.

He was married Jan. 4, 1930, to Eleanor Blain of Indianapolis, who survives.

Other survivors are two daughters, Mrs. Mary Stuart Clark of Wilmette, Ill., and Mrs. Margot Helms of Morristown, Tenn.; a sister, Mrs. William H. Baker of Tequesta, Fla., four grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Services for Mr. Mann will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Doan & Mills Funeral Home, with Dr. D. Elton Trueblood officiating.

Driends may call at the funeral home from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday.

The wedding of Miss Eleanor Smith Blain, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gideon Westervelt Blain, and Earl Gurney Mann, son of Mr. and Mrs. Earl H. Mann, Richmond, took place this afternoon at 4 o'clock in Christ church with Rev. George Shepard Southworth, assisted by the Rev. John Brett Langstaff, officiating. reception at the Woodstock Club followed.



Miss Blain who was given in marrage by her father, wore gown of Ivory bridal satin fashioned on princeas lines with long sleeves and a long train. Satin bands starting at either shoulder crossed at the waist, falling in circular panels to the floor. Her tulle veil fell frim a lace cap held by a tulle chin and band of gardenias in back. She carried shower bonquet of gardenias and lilies of the valley, Miss Blain had as per attendants her cousin. Mrs. Henry Langsenkamp, Jr. who was matron of honor and Miss Marianna Maun, sister of the bridgroom, Miss Hope Platflin, Miss Katharine Malott Brown, Miss Frances Reed and Mrs. Henry John Prenzel bridemaids, The matron of honor and bridemaids wore gowns made alike of eggshell net with close-fitting bodices and long skirts of diagonal flounces and short trains.

Mrs. Langsenkamp wore large hat of pink felt trimmed with gardenias and carried Joanna Hill roses. The bridesmaids also wore pink felt hats trimmed with gardenias and carried President Hoover roses. Stuart Mann. Richmond, a brother of the bridegroom, was best man and the ushers were William Joyce, Columbus, 0.; Joseph Gilbert, Kansas City, Mo.; John Lemon, Richmond, cousin of the bridegroom: Thomas Shoemaker, Richmond: Henry John Frenzel and Wilson Mothershead.

The bride's mother wore gown of blue lace with matching felt hat and corsage of gardenias, and Mrs. Mann wore black chantilly lace with a black felt hat and corsage of orchids.

Mr. and Mrs. Mann will leave for trip to Plorida, the bride traveling in a tweed suit of Chanel red, trimmed In lapin fur, with felt hat to match. The at-home announcement is for 302 East. Haven avenue, Richmond. Indiana, after March 1.

Mrs. Mann attended Tudor Hall School and Smith College and graduate of Indiana University. She a member of the Junior League and has been an active member of the younger social set. Richmond native Margot Mann Helms, of Morristown, Tenn., died unexpectedly Saturday, March 1, 1997, on her 66th birthday.

She was born March 1, 1931, in Richmond to Earl Gurney and Eleanor Blain Mann.

She attended Tudor Hall in Indianapolis and received a bachelor of arts degree in 1953 from Western College (now Miami University) in Oxford, Ohio. She completed her junior year of college at the Sorbonne in Paris.

She had lived in New York City, where she worked in advertising and was active in the Junior League of New York.

She spent her childhood summers on Lake Maxinkuckee in Culver, Ind.



She married John Edward Helms III in 1957, and moved to Morristown, Tenn., where she lived for 40 years.



The genealogist was a community volunteer and served as a member and president of Somo Sala, a community service organization, and was a member of an antiquarian society in Culver and "The Bridgeless Club" in Morristown, Tenn.

Survivors include two daughters, Melissa Helms Buckner of Atlanta and Eleanor Douglass Helms of Atlanta; a son, John Edward Helms of Tampa, Fla.; two grandchildren; a sister, Mary Stuart Clark of Glenview, Ill.; nieces and nephews. Service was at 1 p.m.

Tuesday at Stetzer's Funeral Home in Morristown, Tenn.

A graveside service will be at Oakhill Cemetery in Plymouth, Ind., on Friday.

Former editor of Morristown newspaper dies

MORRISTOWN - Longtime Morristown newspaperman John Edward Helms III died Friday at Morristown-Hamblen Hospital.

Helms, 62, was editor of the Morristown Gazette-Mail, a family newspaper that suspended publication in 1975. Helms was editor for more than 25 years. The daily paper was founded in 1866 and was the oldest firm in Morristown and Hamblen County.

Graveside services for Helms will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Jarnagin Cemetery in Morristown.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Stetzer Funeral Home, also in Morristown.

Helms' newspaper heritage spanned four generations dating back to an early Knoxville daily newspaper, The Knoxville Plebian, in 1850. His parents, John Edward Helms Jr. and Constance O'Keefe Helms, published the Morristown paper until 1972, when ownership passed to their sons.

In 1957 Helms married the former Margot Mann.

He is survived a by his wife; two daughters, Melissa Helms Buckner and Eleanor Douglass Helms, both of Atlanta; a son, John Edward Helms IV of Tampa, Fla.; and two brothers, William O'Keefe Helms and Dr. Crampton Harris Helms, both of Morristown - Knoxville News-Sentinel Sat, Jan 07, 1989 ·Page 7
