"Neighbor" CROMLEY homestead, gone now, which stood on Main Street where RECTOR's Pharmacy is now. It was still there around 1898, as a number of people recollect, an old frame house, which sat back from the street a bit and had a yard a round it. The yard was fenced. - one townships Yesteryears

      Plymouth, Ind., March 12. - John F (S). CROMLEY, age ninety-six, of Culver, last Civil war veteran of Marshall county, died yesterday of pneumonia. Born in Ohio, he moved to Culver at age ten. He operated a meat market at Culver for many years. Three sons survive.

BUILDING UP MAIN STREET
    Arrangements are under way which will change the appearance of Main street somewhat and add new merchandising facilities for the public.

    Three new store buildings will be erected this fall on the Porter corner.

    The small building now on the corner will be removed to the alley at the rear, divided to make two buildings and will face south. One of the buildings is said to have been rented by C. A. Pettis for a barber shop.

    A. L. Porter will erect a building on the corner and W. H. Porter will fill in the intervening space between the corner and the Pythias building with two store rooms.

    The three buildings will bo one story and of frame construction.

    Frank Eaaterday has rented one of the buildings for a meat market, and the other building has been, spoken for by a party not named.

    A. L. Porter will occupy the corner himself, but the line of gocds has not been announced.


City Meat Market - Zechiel Brothers


    1909 - March 18, The well-known landmark, the rock maple tree in the center of the walk in front of the Porter property on Main Street, was cut down recently by Henry Overman and Abe French

    1909 - Jan 14 - Easterday and Zechiel have installed their meat market in the new Porter building

    1909 - March 4, The Culver Meat Market is one of the best lighted places in town since new gas lamps were placed in the windows.

    1911 Mar 28 Robert McFarland has purchased Earl Zechiel's meat market and will take possession immediately.

    1912 APRIL 11 Charles Alexander is the new cutter in Zechiel's meat market, taking the place of Mont Foss.

    1912 - Oct 3 - The fronts of the Zechiel Meat Market, Rector's Pharmacy, and Porters' Restaurant have all received a fresh coat of white paint with green trimmings

    19 Mar 1914 - Zechiel & Elick have sold the city meat Market to W. H. Porter who takes possession next Monday Victor Elick will remain in his employ this summer.

1920 - Mar 3 - The City meat market has again changed hands. Raymond Mikesell a former owner, has bought it. Sam Williamson, the retiring proprietory, will probably take over the duties of county surveyor which have been preformed by his deputy.

1920 - Jun 20 - Raymond Miksell has sold his meat market buisness and residence property to M. H. Ewalt of South Bend and will go to San Diego, Calif., in about three weeks with a view to locating here if suited.

    1922 - Mar 15 - Another Culver Merchant Locates Permanently in Main Street Property
      The W. H. Porter store building occupied by the City Meat Market was sold to M. H. Ewald last week.

      Mr. Ewald will excavate a basement underneath the building and will replace the present refigerator with a larger one containing two compartments one for holding meats in storage foe aging. A larger refrigerating machine will also be installed.

      Eventually new coutners and other up-to-date equipment will supplant the present outfit.

      Mr. Ewald's success since he became proprietor of the City Meat Market is due to his energetic methods, and his thorough knowledge of the meat buisness and of the demands of the public.

    1937 - Jan 13 - Builds new Floor - A new hardwood floor has been laid at Ewald's Market, greatly improving the appearance of the room.

    1940 - April 24 - A buisness transcation was completed last week whereby Paul Snyder bought the market grocery store of Milton E. ewald and took immediate possession of the store Mr. Ewald plans to stay in Culver for a few weeks and them move to his farm near Syracuse.

      1953 - Jan 7 Peter D. Lesko has purchased the Royal Blue Grocery Store and Market from James Betchel


    Time frame is January 5, 1955 Gretter's purchased the Royal Blue Store and Aug 5 1959 - Aug. 5 Raymond Kline purchased the cafe building

      January 5, 1955 - Gretter's (Royal Blue) Food Market Opens

      Mr. and Mrs. Urban A. Gretter of Plymouth, who recently purchased the Royal Blue Store on North Main Street from Mr. and Mrs. Peter Lesko, reopened the establishment for business Monday morning after remodeling: and alterations.

      Mr. Gretter comes to Culver after 20 years' experience in the meat department of the G & G Super Market at Plymouth.

      Gretter's Food Market, which will specialize In top quality meats and groceries, will maintain store hours from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. daily except Sunday. It will be open until 9 o'clock every Friday and Saturday night.

      The Gretters will continue to live in Plymouth at least until the end of the school year since their three children: Gary, 14; Philip, 11; and Carmen, 10, all attend St. Michael's there.

      The Gretters fire members of St. Michael's Church at Plymouth and Mr. Grettcr is an active member of the Knights of Columbus.

      Mr. Gretter's maternal grandfather, the late Peter Keller, wiil be remembered by many of our older residents. His mother the former Celestia Keller, was reared here and now making her home in California.

      The new Culver merchant is a nephew of Ray Gass, owner owner of the There Sisters Restaurant.
