Milton Harold Ewald

M. H. Ewald - Mr. Ewald is reaching for a can of olives from the display county that he designed himself and bad built locally. The atractive piece has received considerab;e praise from visiting authorites on modern merchandising.

July 1, 1920, is the date on which Mr. Ewald opened the store he now operates. This he believes ranks him as the oldest food store owner in Culver.

He had been in business in South Bend before coming here, but was no stranger to Marshall county, having been born in this county near Bremen.

For a number of years his store here was operated as a meat market, but later a full line of groceries was added to keep step with the change in food merchandising.

Mr. Ewald has served as a member of the town board and as president of the Chamber of Commerce, of which he was one of the organizers. for a number of years he was a member of the important road committee and helped bring about many of the improvements local citizens are now enjoying.

Milton was a son of Valentine Ewald and Amelia Kaufman

married 1st On the day after Christmas in 1897, Milton married Lillian Arvilda Radabaugh Wiltfong in Marshall County. Lillie was the daughter of Noah Radabaugh and Mary France who was later adopted by Benjamin Radabaugh and wife Mary Bondure.

In 1900, Milton and his wife, Lillie, lived in Plymouth where Milton was a carpenter.

In 1910, he and his family resided in South Bend at 1311 S. Main Street, and he was still a carpenter.

1918 when he registered for the WWI daft - they were living in the area of Atwood, Kosciusko, Indiana and was listed as a farmer

By 1920, still residing in South Bend but having moved to 401 E. Ewing Avenue, Milton was a butcher at a meat market.

On July 1, 1920, the family moved to Culver; Milton had purchased the Meat Market from Raymond Mikesell, and by 1930, was residing at 209 S. Plymouth Street in Culver with Milton working as a local butcher

In 1940, Milton and his 2nd wife Pearl was residing at 209 S. Plymouth Street in Culver.

On April 24, 1940 it was announced that the previous week that Milton and sold the Market but not the building to Paul t. Snyder who took immediate possesion thereof. He was to remain at least three weeks to conculde buisness and then move to his farm near Syracuse.

Funeral Rites for Mrs. Pearl L. Allen, 80, of 1359 13th St. Sarasota, Fla., formerly of Mishawaka, who died last Monday in Memorial Hospital in that City, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in Rubb Funeral Chapel.

Rev. E. J. Bruton, pastor of the Assembly of God Church, will officiate and burial will be in Solomon Creek, Ind.

Mrs. Allen has been in ill health for the last three years.

She was bornin Benton, Ind. and had lived in this vicinity all her life-time until four years ago when she moved to Flordia.

As Pearl L. Ewald she married Charles W. Allen, in South Bend, in 1951.

Surviving her are her husband; two brothers Sanford Juday of Howe, Ind.; and Clyde Juday of Goshen; and a sister Mrs. Frace Nellans of Sarasota, FLordia
