Dr. J. E. Lang, Summer Resident, Dies At Age 52
Dr. Joseph E. Lang, 52, of 505 Dixieway N., South Bend, and a summer resident of 1074
South Shore Drive, Culver, died at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 30, in St. Joseph's
Hospital.
Dr. Lang had been admitted to the hospital April 22 after he collapsed while making
his rounds at the hospital.
Dr. Lang was graduated from the Indiana University Medical School, Indianapolis, in 1935.
He interned at St. Joseph's Hospital and did graduate work in internal medicine and
gastroenterology at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia. He returned to South
Bend in 1946 after serving as a major in the Army.
During his four years in the service, he had been chief of internal medicine at the Camp
Gordon, Ga., Base Hospital.
The late Mayor George A. Schock appointed Dr. Lang to a four-year term on the South Bend
Board of Public Health in January, 1950.
He had served as president of the St. Joseph Hospital staff and was presented with a
fellowship certificate in the American College of Gastroenterology in 1956.
Recently, Dr. Lang was recognized for the stomach freezing treatment of ulcers - a treatment
developed at the University of Minnesota Experimental Surgical Laboratories. He had
successfully carried out the teatment in South Bend.
He was a member of the Zion United Church of Christ, the Indiana Club, South Bend Lodge 294,
F & AM, and the Scottish Rite, Valley of South Bend.
A lifelong resident of South Bend, he was born there on June 21, 1910, and married Ann Slick
on Nov. 16, 1935.
Besides his widow, he is survived by his mother, Mrs. Maude H. Lang, of South Bend: three sons,
Charles, with the Army in Germany, and Joseph E. Jr. and John T., both students at Indiana
University, and a brother, John A. Lang, of South Bend - May 8 1963 Citizen

Ann Slick Chreist, 89, a lifelong resident of South Bend, Ind., passed away on Tuesday, July 27.
She was born on June 22, 1910, in South Bend, to Mary and Charles Slick.
She was a graduate of South Bend High School, and Indiana University where she was a member of the
Sigma Kappa Sorority.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Mary Slick Byrne.
She married Dr. Joseph E. Lang on Nov. 16, 1935, who also preceded her in death on April 30, 1963.
On Sept. 2, 1964, she married Louis R. Chreist. Mrs. Chreist is survived by her husband, Louis, and
their five children, Charles (Marcia) Lang of Two Harbors, Minn., Joseph Lang of Naples, Fla., Thomas
(Phyllis) Lang of North Liberty, Ind., Robert (Lynn) Chreist of Carmel, Ind., and Ann Chreist (Thomas)
Cooper of South Bend; five grandchildren, Amy DeHaven, Beth Dugan, Eric Chreist, Justin Cooper and Nash
Cooper; and by two great- grandchildren.
She was active in many local, civic and charitable organizations, including the American Association of
University Women, the Pan Hellenic Association, the Hoosier Art Patron Society, the Kiwanis Auxiliary,
and the Schuyler Colfax Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
She was a member of St. Paul's Memorial United Methodist Church where she was member of the Administrative
Board, the Memorials Committee and the Women's Society of Christian Services.
For many years Mrs. Chreist was involved in the operation of her family's business, Slick's Laundry and
Cleaners.
A memorial service for Mrs. Chreist will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 1, at St. Paul's Memorial United
Methodist Church, 1001 West Colfax Avenue, South Bend.
Cremation and private graveside services have already taken place at Riverview Cemetery. Memorial
contributions may be made to St. Paul's Memorial United Methodist Church.
Final arrangements are being handled by the Welsheimer Funeral Home.
