The entire community was shocked Thursday when word was received of the death of Thomas E. SLattery, pioneer druggist, at the Woodlawn hospital, Rochester.

Mr. Slattery whyo was 73 years oof age, had undergone an operation on Monday.

Mr. Slattery was born in St. Joseph Michigan, March 7, 1862 and came to Culver when 33 years of age.

For 40 years he has been interested in the drug business now known as the Culver City Drug Store, and was the next to oldest business man in town from point of years in business, being topped by W. S. Easterday.

He was a member of the school board for one term and served as president one year. He twice sought the office of township trustee, and both races presented unusual situations. The first time he lost by one vote in the primary and last fall was defeated in the general election by Raymond Mikesell, who has been prevented by sickness from taking ooffice, so that neither candidate has occupied the office.

Rev. John Schall officiating. Mass was observed in the Catholic church at Monterey an hour later and interment was in the Culver Cemetery.

Citizens Pay Tribute

The highest esteem in which Mr. Slattery is held is expressed in the following tributes by citizens representing various community interests:
    A. B. Holt, former editor of the Citizen - - To grasp by the hand a man whos counteance carries the impression of a sterling chracter and a sympathetic nature in a pleasure. When the inpression is confirmed by an acquaintance of almost, 30 years, one feels that he has acquired a memory that is lasting and valuabel. Such a man was our friedn Thomas E. Slattery. Genial in his intercourse with all classes, reliable in every work, deed and act he presented a character that may well stand as an example to his fellow men. Quiet and unbtruive, yet intertested in local activities, he mad friends inconsciously of all with whom he came in contact. It is a satisfaction to have known such a man.

    W. S. Easterday, business associate of Mr. Slattery for 40 years - - The passing of Mr. Slattery calls to my memory his coming to Culver in 1895; that he established a drug store with equipment and stock a decade ahead of those in surrounding towns; that he served efficiently on the school board when Culver operated its own school; that ne never sought the honor of leadership but encouraged every civic enterprise with his influence and congenial personality. Culver is a better town because Mr. Slattery lived and worked here.

    W. O. Osborn, lawyer and banker - -
In the passing of Thomas E. Slattery this community has lost one of its finest and highly respected citizens. It has been my good fortune to have known Mr. Slattery for nearly forty years, during all of which we have been constant and continuous friends.

      Personality Impresses

I hink Mr. Slattery had one of the finest personalities, with the cleanest thoughts and the highest regard for his fellwo men of any person that it had ever been my pleasure to have known. Mr. Slattery was a man with the highest ideals, a great lover of his home, and while he was a man of decision, yet he always had respect for the feelings and the opinions of others.

'Loyalty' and 'Service' were both sacared words in the vocabulary of Mr. Slattery. He worked and persevered as a man who had a High Calling, and the memory of this faithful friend and servant of the community should be a blessing to all of us who have survived him.

Gen. L. R. Gignilliat, superintendent of Culver Military Academy - -
Tom Slattery was the first citizen of Culver that I met when I came to the Academy in 1897. He had about him a genuineness and friendliness that appealed to me at once. Afternoon I use to walk to Culver, partly for the exercise but mostly for the pleasure of a friendly chat with Tom. I was a youngster then, tack;omg a new job in a strange place faraway from my native state.

I doubt if Tom ever knew how much those friendly afternoon contacts meant to me. As I look back on those very early days, Tom Slattery, lime Mr. H. H. Culver, stands out in my mind as one of those fine characters so simple and unassuming that the impress they make is only fully realized as time goes on.

Prehaps it is not until they have left us that we quite appreciate how much of their own sterling character men like Tom give to an entire community or enterprise. Such men never quite leave the places in which they have worked and lived. Coming citizens of our community who never knew Tom Slattery will be beneficiaries of his finess.
