Elizabeth "Betsy" Mifanwy Guthrie July 20, 1927 - June 12, 2021 |
EElizabeth "Betsy" Mifanwy Guthrie passed away peacefully on June 12, 2021 at 93 years of
age surrounded by loved ones.
She was born on July 20, 1927 to Tom D.B. Thomas and Abbie Hasler Thomas in Granite City,
IL.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years,
James U Guthrie, M.D. They were
married on June 24, 1950.
She was also preceded in death by her parents and her brother David, and sister, Peggy.
Betsy was an accomplished woman of grace, who graduated from the IU School of Nursing
in 1949. She was involved in many activities including a Girl Scout Leader from Brownies to
the Senior High group, Tri Kappa Sorority, Alpha Omicron Pi Sorority, treasurer for Peru High
School Art Collection Board, the Dukes Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and the Peru Civic Center
Board.
Betsy enjoyed many summers at the Guthrie Culver Lake cottage on Lake Maxinkuckee with
her family. She also participated in several Bridge groups, where she made many close
friendships. She had a vibrant faith and was a long standing member of Main Street United
Methodist Church in Peru. Many charitable community organizations benefited from her
generosity.
Betsy was a wonderful Mother and role model to her children, Dr. Thomas Guthrie (Linda),
and daughter's Helen Beth Gutin (David) and Abbie Guthrie. Also surviving are 5 grandchildren,
Jonathan Guthrie (Becky), Meg Pennington (Justin), James Guthrie (Diann), Sarah Barsman
(Zach) and Allie Weinberg (Zach). They loved their GG passionately and cherished their close
relationship. And to her delight, she is also survived by her 10 great granddaughters Madi, Ella,
Elaine, Elizabeth (Betsy), Rosalind (Ros), Tali, Abbie, Lilli, Marin and Eleanor James.
The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude for the extraordinary and loving care she
received from her Blair Ridge "family".
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to "The Guthrie Family Community Fund"
held at the Northern Indiana Community Foundation established to provide for local community
needs. Memorial donations may also be made to the Main Street United Methodist Church in
Peru.
Visitation will be at the Eikenberry-Eddy Funeral Home located at 84 West Main Street in Peru.
Hours are on Thursday, June 17th from 1 pm. until 4:00pm with a service celebrating Betsy's
life at 4 pm.

Elizabeth 'Betesy' M (Thomas) Gutherie is daughter of Thomas D. B.and Abbie
(Hasler) thomas, both deceased who were of Greene county Indiana while
living they were frequent vistors of the cottage. Abbie is the daughter of Ella
S. (Williams) and William Thomas Hasler granddaughter of Margaret (Ault) and
James Mack williams and great granddaughter of John and Fidelia (Taylor) and
John was a ancestor of Valentine Alt and all are distantly relation to the Aults of
Fulton and Marshall counties Indiana. Ella S. (Williams) Hasler was a sister to Martha
Ann (Williams) Edington (my great grandmother: her daughter Effie Edington
Emery, her daughter Reba Doris Emery McKee her daughter Judith Elaine McKee \Burns)
