The Speyer family came to this part of the country late in the 'sixties or early in the 'seventied.

Henry and Margaret (Pickens) Speyer, with their children, removed from New York to Marshall County in 1869. Thompson's history states that Henry Speyer moved to Marmonto about 1879)

A merchant by occupation Henry Speyer, the elder, became identified witht the commercial intersets of the village of Marmont upon his arrival.

He was a soldier in the Civuil Way, serving first in the Twenty-thirs Indiana Volunteer Infantry (Co. D, 23rd Regt. KY Vol. Inf.) for three months, and later re-enlisting for three years, but was honorably discharges before the espiration of his term of service on account of sickness.. He entered the service as a private soldier, but for gallant and meritorious conduct was promoted to Captain of his company, which rank he held at the time of his discharge.

He was a local politician of considerablee note, and at one time was the Republican candidate for the office of Clerk of the Circuit Court.

The children of Henry and Margaret Speyer were seven in number, five whom survive their father: Jacob, who was a merchant of New York City; Sarah, the wife of Henry Maxwell of New York city; Eva the wife of William POrter of Marmont; Marion the widow of Andrew Kork of Marmont; and Henry M. now a retired citizen of Culver

His death occurred at Marmont (today Culver) in August, 1886, when he was around the age of 55 years smf a mews clip says he was buried in WHeeler Cemetery.

It was from Captain Speyer that the Civil War Veteran's organization Speyer Post No. 489 in Culver was named.

    Death of Mrs. Margaret Speyer.

    The death of Margaret Speyer, widow of Capt. Henry Speyer, occuned at her home in Culver Tuesday afternoon at the age of 72 years.

    She will be buried at Oak Hill cemetery today, the funeral party arriving on the noon train.

    Mrs. Speyer, whose maiden name was Pickens, was' born in Ireland.

    She married her late husband at Newark, N. J., and they afterwards removed to Kentucky and in 1879 came to this county, where Mr. Speyer engaged in merchandising at Culver, then Marmont, in association with the Plvmouth firm of Nussbaum and Mayer.

    Since Capt. Speyer's death about fifteen years ago she has made her home with her children in Culver and New York.

    Mrs. Speyer was a member of the Episcopal church.

    Of her seven children five survive, namely: Jacob, a merchant of New York City; Sarah, wife of Henry Maxwell, of Yonkers, N. Y; Eva, wife of Wrm. Porter of Culver; Marian, widow of Andrew Korp, of Culver, and Henry M., postmaster at Culver, who succeded to the business of his father and is now conducting a large establishment.

    Mrs. Speyer was a kind, Christian woman, who was sincerely loved and respected by a large circle of acquaintances. Her patience and fortitude in time of trouble are recalled no less than her sunny and affectionate disposition, her charitable inclination and her strong common sense. - Weekly Republican Plymouth, Indiana Nov 21, 1901
