William W & Edna Taber Family

I, William W. Taber, was born January 1, 1918 in Culver. My parents were Frank Harrison Taber, borb October 17, 1893 an died July 27, 1941 and Ethel Huldah (Wiseman) Taber, born August 6, 1893 and died March 31, 1982.

On my mothers side of the family my grandparents were Dr. B. W. S. Wiseman and Rose (Buswell) Wiseman.

My fathers parents were William Harrison Taber and Rose Taber, who owned a ladies apparel store in Kansas City, Missouri. I never got to know them weell, since they lived so far away.

My father was assistant chief engineer at the Culver Military Academy

I have two sisters, Rose Mary Jane Scruggs and Frances Ruth Geisleman

I attended grade school and high School in Culver, graduating in 1936.

In 1934, during the great depression, I and some friends organized a dance band. In remember our first dance job. There were ten of us and we received $2.50 for the job. That ammounted to 25 cents each. Some of us continued playing for 27 years, finally disbanding in 1960.

I was introduced to my wife, Edna Marie Tetzloff (born february 21, 1920 in Pulaski county near North Judson), on a blind date in 1941. We were married July 11, 1945 in St. Peter's Lutheran Church, North Judson.

In December 1942 I enlisted in the army. I was a cook in the 558th Ordinance Company, a tank repair outfit. I attained the rank of sergeant before my discharge in 1945.

I was a meat cutter from 1945 until 1956. In 1957 we purchased the Culver News Agency which we operated for 23 years retiring in 1980.

We have three sons: James Harrison,, Robert Eugene , ; and William Lee, .

We purchased our home in February 1946 for $6500, where we still live, at 505 Lakeshore Drive, Culver. It was built for Harry Medbourn in 1910. The blocks and cement work were furnished by Mr. M. R. Cline...

After my father's death, my mother married Bertam Davis of Leiters Ford in December 1945. He passed away 19 years later...

I belong to the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, Indianapolis Jazz CLub, and am a life member of the Culver Military Academy Summer School Alumni Association.

My wife, Edna, is assistant librarian at Culver. She worked at Culver Military Academy for ten years in the 1940's. - William W. Taber; 1985 History of Marchall County, Indiana.

Edna Marie (Tetzloff) Taber Feb 21, 1920 - July 20, 2009

Edna Marie (Tetzloff) Taber, 89, died Monday, July 20, 2009, at home in Culver. She was born February 21, 1920, 3 miles south of North Judson in Rich Grove Township, Pulaski County, Ind. She was a daughter of August Tetzloff and Johannah (Hoeckelberg) T etzloff. All four of Edna's grandparents were immigrants from Germany.

She was raised in Rich Grove Township in Sears and Roebuck home her father assembled. The home had no indoor plumbing while she grew up there.

She had two older siblings, both deceased, Evelyn (Tetlzloff) Dalka, wife of Kenneth Dalka, and Eugene Tetzloff, husband of Irene (Hawbrook) Tetzloff.

Edna attended the county schools in Rich Grove Township until middle school, when she attended the Lutheran school in North Judson. She attended high school at North Judson High School, graduating one your ahead of her classmates in 1937. In 1938 and 1939, she attended the South Bend College of Commerce where she learned bookkeeping skills.

In 1940, she moved to Culver, Ind. and was employed at Culver Military Academy in the bookkeeping department. One of her workmates, Hazel Cook, was the spouse of Charles Cook, a classmate of William "Bill" W. Taber, and the Cooks introduced Edna to Bill. Shortly after Bill was discharged from the US Army, he and Edna married on July 11, 1945 in Saint Peter's Lutheran Church in North Judson. Since that time, Edna has attended the Wesley United Methodist Church in Culver, of which she and Bill were faithful members.

In 1957, Bill purchased the Culver News Agency on Main Street, and remained the proprietor there until his retirement. During those years, Edna was the store's bookkeeper, performing her bookkeeping duties at home in evenings and weekends, otherwise tending to raising her three sons and maintaining the home during the daytime. Edna also helped Bill with his photography studio business which operated out of the home.

Bill was strictly a black and white photographer in the 1940's and 1950's, and Edna would skillfully tint his black and white prints to add color to the portraits he took of many Culver residents.

With her boys grown, Edna began a 32 year career as an assistant librarian at Culver-Union Township Library in 1974, retiring in 2006. In her earlier years there, she was tasked with cleaning and repairing projection films for several area libraries, before the films were redistributed. One of her most lasting achievements at the library was the cataloging and organizing of the necrology file, which had consisted of a large collection of unorganized obituaries. Her indexing of these obituaries will be a big help to historians, genealogist and researchers for years to come.

In her spare time, Edna enjoyed solving crossword puzzles, often photocopying newspaper crosswords at the library so she could work on them at home. She also enjoyed flower gardening and feeding birds in the back yard. She loved cats and the company her pet cats always provided.

She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother, a faithful servant of her Lord, Jesus Christ, and a dear friend to many in the community, especially those who's company she shared at Real Meals. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Surviving are her three sons, James H. (Cynthia) Taber, Indianapolis, Robert E. Taber, Plymouth, and William L. Taber, Indianapolis; and two grandchildren, Matthew H. (Casey) Taber, and Jaime M. Taber, both of Indianapolis. She was preceded in death by her parents, siblings and husband.

Services will be held at 1 PM on Friday, July 24, 2009 at Wesley United Methodist Church in Culver, with visitation at the church, 2 hours prior.

Burial in Culver Masonic Cemetery will immediately follow the service. Funeral services are entrusted to Bonine-Odom Funeral Home, Culver. Memorial Contributions may be made to the Wesley United Methodist Church, or to Real Services in Culver.
