Michael L. Overmyer

I Michael L. Overmyer, was born at Memorial Hospital in South Bend. I was the first born of Glenn and Lucile Perkins Overmyer.

I went to school in Culver and graduated in 1962. Most of the more memorable experiences invovled music. I sang in the choir and played the trumphet in band.

After high school, I enrolled at Purdue University in the School of Agriculture. I had the oppertunity to play first trumpet in Purdue's All American Marching Band for two years. I was graduated in 1966 with a B.S. degree in animal sciences. During my senior year at Prudue I met my future wife, Connie, who was a student at St. Elizabeths School of Nursing. While at Prudue, I was a member of the Marwood Co-op.

Connie was born in Chicago, Illinois to Lloyd and Myrna Lydia Nordstorm. At the age of two, her family moved to Thayer, where she attended Lincoln Grade School, the My Ayr Jr. High. Here sophomore year her family moved to DeMotte, where she graduated from DeMotte High School in 1964. She then attended and was graduated from St. Elizabeth's School of Nursing in August of 1967.

I served in the Veterinary Corps of the U. S. Air Force. I was stationed at MacDill AFB in Tampa, Flordia. My main job was inspecting all food items coming on base for the commisary which at that time was over a million dollars worth a month. We were also in charge of inspecting the shrimp plants in the Tampa area that had governement contracts. I was discharged in April of 1971 and have been farming with my father on the family homestead since that time. While in Flordia, Connie worked as a registered nurse at the Tampa Osteopedic Hosptial. Upon coming home to Culver she worked serveral private duty jobs. She is now employed at Culver Military Academey Health Center

I have been a member of the Culver Jaycees, Marshall County 4-H Council, Marsahll County 4-H Board for ten years. County 4-H Beef Committee, and Culver Union Township United Fund Board of Directors. - - Connie has been a member of the Maxinkuckke Junior Women and Culver Tri-Kappa. We are bothmembers of the Culver Young Farmers, in which Mike served as Area II Director in 1983. We have both been on the Culver Fest Committee, serving on the organization committee. We are members of Wesley United Mehodist Church and serve on various church committess.

It is interesting to note that the first Overmyer descendant (then called Obermayer) came from Baden, Germany in 1751. His name was John George Overmyer, Franklin Overmyer who settled in Union township was the third generation from Germany. Franklin served in the 55th Regiment Indiana Infrantry from Febraury 1865 until her was mustered out in August 1865. - Marshall County History 1989

Tho not mentioned above Mike has been involved with the Maxinkuckee Players and Lions Club through the years. Mike was introduced to his work with AT& T by Dennis Westafer and another Culverite and AT& T employee at the time. Mike says that Dennis called him inquiring for people who would work in the removal of coax cable that had been installed in the 1980's when Cable television came into existence.
In remembering those times Mike related about his job:
I started out as an inspector. My first route was 43 miles long; I walked behind the trench the whole way. This was just taking cable out for salavge.
