Dorothy Marmon Boyd, 92, early backer of UCR

Press-Enterprise, The (Riverside, CA) - Friday, March 17, 1995 Author: Mark Petix, The Press-Enterprise

Dorothy Marmon Boyd, who with her late husband Philip L. Boyd, helped generate the legislative support needed to build the University of California, Riverside, died March 13 at her home in Palm Desert. She was 92.

Mrs. Boyd is credited with assisting her husband, then a state assemblyman, in pushing through legislation that built UCR. The couple also provided the university's famed Carillon bell tower, the centerpiece of the UCR campus. Long active in community affairs, the Boyd's donated about 3,500 acres for the Boyd Deep Canyon Research Center, a protected University of California reserve dedicated to ecological research and training. "Dorothy and Phil together played a pivotal role in the founding of UCR," said James H. Erickson, vice chancellor for university relations and development. "They comprised an incredible team. With their quiet dignity, they did so much to found and sustain the university, and they provided strength and guidance to so many worthy community initiatives."

Mrs. Boyd was born May 22, 1902, in Indianapolis. Her grandparents were founders of the Marmon Herrington Automotive Companies, inventors of the Marmon automobile.

She married Philip Boyd in 1926 in Palm Springs. Mr. Boyd died in 1989.

Mrs. Boyd was a community volunteer with the American Red Cross, the United Way, Riverside Community Hospital, the Riverside Art Museum, the Junior League and the Daughters of the American Revolution.

She is survived by three children, Spencer Boyd of Brookings, Ore., Libby Henderson of Panorama City and Douglas Boyd of Newport Beach; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Private memorial services were held Wednesday. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Living Desert in Palm Desert, the Riverside Art Museum and the UC Riverside Foundation

She married 10 Mar 1926 PHILIP LINNAES BOYD born 8 Oct 1900 in Indiana He died 9 Sep 1989 in Palm Springs, Riverside, California. Buried Crown Hill Cemetery Indianapolis Marion County Indiana Son of Linnaes Cox Boyd and Mary Thomas Spencer
Boyd fell ill and was forced to drop out of Wabash College where he was a student.

In 1921 his parents brought him to Palm Springs in the hope the dry climate would help him recover.

Boyd started work as a secretary for the Palm Springs Chamber of Commerce and opened the first branch of Bank of America in Palm Springs.

During the Great Depression Boyd was able to delve into real estate, buying ranch lands in the area of Deep Canyon.

Boyd was instrumental in incorporating Palm Springs, serving as the town's first mayor from 1938 to 1942.

He ran unopposed for a seat in the California State Assembly, representing Riverside in what had been then called the 78th Assembly District from 1945 to 1949. While an assemblyman, Boyd voted to establish University of California, Riverside.

As a member of California's State Public Works Boards Boyd participated in the logistical process of establishing the UCR campus.

In 1950 was elected chairman of the California Republican Party's central committee, beating out the serving vice-chairman who would traditionally have been elected.

In 1953 Boyd, who was on the Board of Trustees for the Palm Springs Art Museum, leased property for a nature reserve now part of the Living Desert Zoo and Gardens. Boyd encouraged faculty from the newly-opened University of California, Riverside to use his nature reserve for research only to realize his public nature reserve was not a fitting setting for academic research.

In 1957 Goodwin J. Knight, then Governor of California, appointed Boyd as a Regent of the University of California system. Boyd resigned his position as regent April 1, 1970 after new laws changed the financial disclosure requirements for state officials

In 1958 Boyd donated another parcel of land 1,701 acres to purchase a total of 3,500 acres in Deep Canyon to open what is now the research center.

Boyd's memoir is archived at UCR in the Special Collections Department of Rivera Library.

Boyd and his wife also donated a set of silver Towle Louis XIV pattern salt and pepper shakers. Louis XIV pattern coffe pot & sugar bowl to the Indianapolis Museum of Art
