James E. "Mick" McCombs Mar. 2, 1926 - Mar. 2, 2015 MISHAWAKA - James E. "Mick" McCombs, 89, of Mishawaka, died Monday, March 2, 2015.

The Teegarden native was born March 2, 1926, to James W. & Eva M. (Titus) McCombs.

Mick was a WW II veteran of the US Army, was a Gold Star recipient and served as a Staff Sergeant on the front lines with the 1st Infantry Division.

He was a retired butcher and grocery store manager.

Mick was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church, the VFW, the American Legion and the 40 & 8. Mick was honored as one of the passengers onboard the WW II War Memorial Honor Flight from Chicago to Washington, D.C.

Mick was preceded in death by his first wife, Sue McCombs, and his daughter, Patti Polich.

His survivors include his wife, Pauline McCombs of Mishawaka; sons, Steven (Kim Miller) McCombs of Covington, IN, Martin McCombs of Los Angeles CA; daughter, Juli (Paul) Humbles of Aldie, VA; son-in-law, Al Polich of Western Springs, IL; step-daughters, Shelly (Scott) LaPlace of Wolcottville,. Karen (Mike) Horvath of South Bend; 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

There are no services in Chapel Hill Funeral Home, 10776 McKinley Hwy.

Private interment at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens.

The family's preferred memorial is St. Peter Lutheran Church, 437 East Dragoon Trail, Mishawaka IN 46544.

B, Sue McCombs, 67, of Birchwoodf Drive, Mishawaka, Ind., passed away at 12:55 a.m. in the St. Joseph;s Medical Centerm South Bend Ind.

Mrs. McCombs was born on Sept 16, 1930, in SOuth Bend to Harold W. and Lila (Welsh) Schiffler.

On Jan 10, 1948 in South Bend, she married James E. McCombsm whom she leaves to cherish her memories.

SHe is also survived by two sons Steven B. McCombs of Versailles, Ind. and Martin B. McCombs of Log Beach, Calif,; two daughters Patricia Abb McCombs-Polich of Chicag, Ill. and Juli Marie Humbles of Berthouf, Colo.; mer mother Lila Schiffler of South Bend, a brother William E> Schiffer of Seattle, Wash; and by five grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her father and by a brother, Ronald E. Schiffer.

Mrs. McCombs worked for Notre Dame in the financial aide offive for 15 years and retired six years ago.

Visitation will be held at Chapel Hill Funeral Home from 1 to 2 p.m. on Tuesday with a memorial service at 2 p. m. Pastor Magelsdorf of St. Peters Lutheran Church will be officiating.

Momorial contributions may be mad to the American Cancer Society.

Patricia M. Polich, formerly of Culver, Indiana, died in Chicago after a courageous battle with cancer.

She was the wife of Allen D. Polich; mother of Brett (Robin), Kyle and Amandah; grandmother of Luke James Polich; daughter of James Earl and the late Betty Sue, nee Schiffer, McCombs; sister to Steve McCombs, Martin McCombs and Juli Humbles. Teacher to many in District #106 Highlands.

Patti was a 1967 graduate of Culver Community High School and later graduated from Valparaiso University in 1971 with a teaching degree. She married Allen D. Polich in August 1972.

Her family now resides in Western Springs, IL.
