Mr. Holaday passed away early Thursday morning, Feb. 14, 2008 at Bronson Methodist Hospital.

Clayton was known for his kindness and integrity; he was loved and respected by everyone who knew him.

He was born July 20, 1918 in Grand Ledge, MI; the youngest of three children to the late Robert and Effie May (Hooks) Holaday.

Clayton was employed by Western Michigan University as an English Professor for 24 years, until his retirement in 1980.

On July 8, 1944, he was married to Eileen Walsh in Youngstown, OH, who survives.

Also surviving are four children, Michael (Beverly) Holaday of Grand Rapids, Susan (John) Darovec of Bradenton, FL, Margaret (Tim) Franklin of Kalamazoo, and Kate Holaday of Kalamazoo; three grandchildren, Andrew (Rebecca Lindsey) Holaday of Lansing, Elizabeth (Nathan Riggle) Holaday of Tucson, AZ, and Abby Franklin of Kalamazoo; and four great-grandchildren, Nitya and Narayan Taber, and Meredith and Simon Riggle.

Preceding him in death were his parents; one sister, Margaret Hasenmueller; and one brother, Allan Holaday.

In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no public visitation or services.

Family and friends will celebrate his life at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Loaves and Fishes, Kalamazoo Humane Society, or Kalamazoo Gospel Mission.

HOLADAY, EILEEN Kalamazoo Age 94, died quietly at the Springs at Bronson Place in Kalamazoo on January 12, 2014. br>
Born Eileen Elizabeth Walsh on October 26, 1919 in Youngstown, OH, she was the only child of Martin and Rose (MacGuire) Walsh. br>
She was educated at Seton Hill college and Case Western Reserve University, where she earned an MA in English and better yet, met Clayton Holaday of Bourbon, IN. They were married on July 8, 1944 and afterward moved to Bloomington, IN, where Clayton earned a Ph.D. in English. br>
Their first child, Robert Michael was born in Bloomington in 1948.br>
In 1949, Clayton's career in academia took them to Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, where Eileen gave birth to daughters, Susan Laura (1949) and Margaret Rose (1952). br>
Unhappy in the south, Clayton next took an appointment at what was then Western Michigan College and the family moved to Kalamazoo in 1956. Daughter, Katharine Eileen was born there in 1958. br>
Eileen lived in Kalamazoo until the end of her life. br>
Although she occasionally taught courses in children's literature for WMU Extension, she was primarily a homemaker, a gifted home cook whose baked goods were especially treasured by all who knew her, and a world-class acquirer of stray animals, having taken i n at one time or another a DeKay's snake, a thirteen-lined ground squirrel, a blue jay, a family of loggerhead shrikes, a hen pheasant, several turtles and any number of cats and dogs. Dogs in particular were one of her chief delights in life.br>
Eileen is survived by her four children; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. br>
The family will hold a private burial. br>
Memorial contributions may be made to the Kalamazoo Animal Rescue or Loaves & Fishes.
