Culver , Ind. - Allan G. Holaday, 90, of Culver died at 4:55 p.m. Wednesday (Aug. 23, 2006) at Miller's Merry Manor Nursing Home, Plymouth, Ind.

There will be no services.

Deaton-Clemens Funeral Home, 115 S. Main St., Bourbon, Ind., is handling arrangements.

Mr. Holaday was born Jan. 16, 1916, in Grand Ledge, Mich., a son of Robert Clayton and Effie Hooks Holaday. He married Ruby Lees on Sept. 30, 1945. She survives.

Survivors also include two sons, Bruce Holaday of Oakland, Calif., and Scott Holaday of Lubbock, Texas; a brother, Clayton Holaday of Kalamazoo, Mich.; and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother and a sister.

Mr. Holaday was raised in the Bourbon area, attended Bourbon schools and lived in Culver since the 1950s. He was a professor of English literature at the University of Illinois and retired in 1980. He attended United Methodist Church in Bourbon and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Eta Sigma, Delta Phi Alpha, Modern Language Association, Modern Humanities Research Association and Cambridge Bibliography Sociological American Association. He wrote several books on English literature and enjoyed sailing and his home on Lake Maxinkuckee.

Culver - Ruby Lees Holaday passed away in Culver on Jan. 17. She was the wife of the late Allan GH. Holaday of Bourbon and Culver . Ruby was born in CHampaign, Ill. to Harry and Lena (Stalter) Lees. She attended the University of Illinois where whe was a member of Alpha Xi Delta soroity. She was elected to Pho Beta Kappa and opbtained a B.A. in 1942 and later a Ph.D. in French

WHile a graduate student, she met Allan, a professor in the English Department, and they were married on Sept. 30, 1845. They had two sons, A. Scott and Bruce K. Unlike circumstances today, in the 1950s there was limited assitance for a young mother who wnated to pursue an academic career and rais a family. Ruby put aside her dreams of becoming a propfessor of French to raise her two children and support her husband in his career. However, she remanined an avid reader and gardener.

In 1950, Ruby and Alan purchased property on the West shore of Lake Maxincukee where they enjoyed many summer days sailing and swimming.

They usually spent Christmas holidays escaping the cold in INdiana Rocks Beach, FLa. IN 1961, RUby was presented the challenge of tutoring her two sons while the family traveled in ENglalnd during ALlan's sabbatical. When both of their sons were settled into careers of their own, Ruby and Alan retired to Culver in 1980 where they resided until their deaths. In addition to her two sons, Ruby is survived by her four grandchildren: CLaire, Ian, Tristan and Sarah.
