Frederick 'Fred' Strefling Sr. LAKESIDE Frederick "Fred" Strefling Sr., 90, well-known area businessman, went to be with his Lord on Friday, July 14, 2000, from his home in Lakeside.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, July 17,2000, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Sawyer, with the Rev. Kendall Schaffer officiating.

Interment will follow in New Troy Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Pobocik Funeral Home Connelly-Noble Chapel, Three Oaks, and one hour before the services at the church on Monday.

Memorials may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church, Sawyer. Mr.

Strefling was born Oct. 5, 1909, in Weesaw Township, to Michael and Paulina (Ratz) Strefling.

He grew up a farm boy and prospered with the help of God. Even as a young man, he was a hard worker, owning a grocery stone in Sawyer. In 1938, he began working for the U. S. Post Office in St. Joseph.

He owned a grocery business on Cleveland Avenue in St. Joseph, and in 1952, Mr. Strefling bought a Chevrolet agency in Culver, Ind.

He began a construction business that built homes in various places, including Berrien County in Michigan, and LaPorte, Porter and Lake counties in Indiana.

Mr. Strefling was a Gideon for many years and a faithful servant for the Lord all his life.

He was instrumental in building Trinity Lutheran Church, Culver, Ind., the parsonage and teacherage for Trinity Lutheran Church, Sawyer, and he remodeled other area churches.

On Aug. 18, 1933, he married Anne M. Seip in Sawyer. Anne preceded him in death on Jan. 9, 1992. He is survived -by his children Fred' (Patricia) Strefling of LaPorte, Ind., Frieda (Robert) Cultice of Culver, Ind., Judy (Dr. A. Thomas) Smith of Lakeside, and Pamela (Jeffery) Mort of Joseph; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great [grandchildren]

Mr. Strefling was one of 14 children and is survived by his brothers, Emil Strefling of Baroda, Dr. Michael Strefling of Stephenson, Mich., Martin Strefling of Baroda, and Dr. John Strefling of Michigan City, Ind.. - Herald-Palladium Benton Harbor, Michigan Jul 15 2000
