        O'er the spoils that death has won.
        We would at this solemn meeting Calmly say, "Thy will be done."
        By thy hands the boon was given.
        Thou hast taken but thine own;
        Lord of earth and God of heaven,

    Stephen S. Smith, Rural Route Mail Carrier Here a Half-Century Ago
      Horsepower is important to the rural mail carrier of 1955 and Horsepower also important to the rural mail carrier of 1902. it was About the only similarity between the problems of mail carrying five decades ago and today is horsepower. Pictured above is the late Stephen S. Smith, Burr Oak rural route mail carrier, as he appeared in his horse drawn carriage on his route on a winter day in 1902.

      The picture of Mr. Smith will strike a responsive chord in old timers who will recall that there was once a rural route delivery out of the thriving community of Burr Oak. They will recall, too, that at the time this photograph was taken David H. Smith and Ezra Hawkins were the rural mail carriers serving the Culver post office. Mr awkins was the paternal grandfather to Mrs. Marjorie Ferrier of The Culver Citizen staff. Traffic wasn't so heavy 50 years ago and Union Township roads became impassible in the winters and during the spring thaws. The oilman of yesteryear was the carrier of news as well as mail on the then rather new Rural Free Delivery, Mr. Smith, who died in 1910 at the age of 85, retired from the postal service in 1931.

      Many of his relatives still reside in this vicinity Including his widow. Mrs. Elnora Smith, and his daughter, Mrs. Wilma Snyder. A son William J. Smith, a retired postal employee, resides in San Diego, Calif., another son, Rea Smith, lives in Seattle, Wash., and a daughter Mrs. Edward Osborn, makes her home in Tucson, Ariz. Feb 16, 1955 ·
