Walker Corner Appears to Win Offical's Approval
Sites Are Listed
Actual COnstruction WOrk to be Started This Fall is Inspector's Belief
Fourteen bids on property for a site for the erection of a new $65,000 post
offive in Culver were opened this morning with prices ranging from #3,000 to
#18,500.
The bids were opened in the presence of J. R. Cordrey, post office inspector
and site agent, who then made a thorough inspection of the sites offered for
sale and is now preparing his recommendations to the Procurement Divisuon of
the Treasury Department
It is understood that the inspector's report is to be filed by August 1st so
that the actual construction work can be started this fall.
It was explained that this request for immediate action is rather unusual in
the building of post offices, leading to the belief that Culver will actually
hace a new post office by nex summer.
Walker Lot Favored
While no offical statement regarding the proposed sites was given, it is understood
that the Mary Walker corner and adhacent lots mee the major requirements fo the
deaprtment.
Post offices are usually built off the main stree to avoid traffis, yet not over a
block from the business section if possible.
The low price and the fact that there is pavement on three sides adds to the
desirability of the Walker site.
It is understood the Speyer location ranks secon in consideration.
