Joe W. Boetrsma - If Mr. Boetsma appears to know what he is doing in this picture
there is plenty of reason for it as he has had 19 years of xperience in upholstering
and furniture repair business.
His background inculdes work in a furniture factory of Crofet Lodhe, Mich. and a
plant in Shereveport, La., while he was had his onw shop here for a number of
years.
He was born on a farm near Zeeland, Mich., but his early years were spent in
New jersey.
He first became an automobile mechanic, working for Packarrd and Cadiliac, and
during the was tested governement turcks at Grand Rapids, Mich.
He first came to Culver, in 1917, and except for a couple of brief periods has
maintained his home here ever since.br>
He was a member of the fire deparment for several years and served as chief for
a short time.
Joe was one of the energetic citizens who helped get signers on the petition
that brought town mail delivery to Culver.
In March this years he formeed the firm of Joe Boetsma & Sons, and plans to
open a furniture store in Burr Oak about the middle of the month. However the
uphlostering business will be continued here as before.

Joes Boetsma has been employed by the East side cottagers as patrolman during
the closed season. The Long Point property owners are also considering a like
service. He will apply for police power, and expcets to begin his duties this week -

Passed away at home early Thursday morning. He had suffered heart trouble for
several years, but had been active up until the fatal attack.
Born near Zeeland, Michigan and his early years were spent in New Jersey. He
became an auto mechanic, working for Packard and Cadillac, and during WWI,
he tested government trucks at Grand Rapids, Michigan. He also worked at
furniture factories in Michigan and Louisiana.
He live in New Jersey a few years before coming to Culver in 1917.
He was a member of the fire department for several years and served as chief
for a short time.
He also worked as an auto mechanic in Culver a few years before 1921, when
Joe headed the firm of Joe Boetsma & Sons, upholsterers.
Surviving are his widow, Dessie, two sons, Earl of Marietta, Ohio, and Joe H. of
Culver; one step-daughter, Mrs. Claribel Quivey, Culver; one step-son, Charles
Monroe Scott, Tucson, Ariz.; one brother, Garrett Boetsma, Princeton, NJ.; two
sisters, Mrs. Jessie Marsh, Howard City, Mich., and Mrs. Katheryn Hammond,
Paterson, NJ; and five grandchildren.

Mrs Dessie Boetsma, 84, formerly of Culver, died at 1 p.m. Wednesday at
Canterbury Manor Nursing Home, Rochester, after a length illness.
She was born on JUly 12, 1895 near Culver, and was a life-long resident.
SHe was a charter member of the Culver Bible Church and the Culver
Homemakers Club.
On March 1917 at Culver, she married Joe W. Boetsma. He died on
March 19, 1953.
She is survived by a daughter Mrs. Ronald (Chalribel Quivey of Culver; two
sons Charles M. Scott of Tuscon, Ariz. and Joe H. Boetsma of Culver. Six
grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and five brothers: Leo Warren of
Culver; James Warren of Gas City; and Steve, Hershel and Edward all of
South Bend.
On sone and two graddaughters preceded her in death.
Services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Culver Bible CHurch. Rev. Maynard
Tittle, former pastor, will officiate.
Burial will be in CUlver Masonice Cemetery
Friends may call after 2 p.m. Friday and until noon Saturday at the Bonine
Funeral Home Culver.
