1963 - jan. 22- Three-Way Liquor permits Granted 2 Local restaurants
The Marshall County Alcoholic Beverage Board granted three-way retailers permits last
Thursday,Jan. 16, to two Culver restaurants, the E l Ray Restaurant and the Lake
View Restaurant. Both establishments heretofore had only two-way permits. The Culver
votes were 3-0. Ted Hayes representing the State announced the Board's decision at
10:30 a.m. after an hour and a half debate.
Representing the El Ray Restaurant were Dick Kreighbaum and Bernard Scheetz and Kathryn
and Robert May represented the Lake View Restaurant.
A delegation of Culver citizens headed by Dr. Ronald C. Williams appeared as remonslrators
against the three-way permits. Speakers for the remonstrance included: Mrs. Ruth MacQuillan,
president of Union Township Council of Churches; the Rev. Walter S. Chisholm on behalf of
the Culver Ministerial Association: Sanford C. Snyder, an insurance agent; Mrs. Guy Davis,
homemaker; and Theodore L. Ervin, president of the Culver Town Board.
Mr. Hayes said in granting the permits " I feel that every effort will be made by these
gentlemen to conduct their businesses in a lawful manner. As to the validity , we can only
assume that it, is legal. A suit had been filed by Dr. Williams to test the validity of Culver
town ordinance No. 177
Ida chipman wrote of the corner Tavern -
it had a beautiful terrazzo floor. The new owner cleaned the place up and installed
new equipment. They tried to leave the atmosphere of an 'old Egnlish pub' intact.
They did install a new bar... the top of a shuffleboard table - - slick enough to
save steps as the barkeep slid mugs of beer to thirsty customers. One improvement
that didn't last long was the "family Entrance" over a side door. The local minsterial
group paid a call on the new owners and asked them to remove it because it said it sent
the wrong message....
During the 1970's the late Robert F. Kyle an editor for the Indianapolis Star frequented
the tavern and wrote of it: " Most of the men folk end up, at one time or another, at
the Corner Tavern."

Well an end to a long era of memories - Sherri Lowery, Gloria Banks, Cheryl Wojciehowski
Davis Reininga as waitresses among others; Janice Wynn as cook. |
The rich & famous from the Academy that ended up crossing the treshold into the inter sanctum
of 'the Corner Tavern' were: Ernie Banks (Chicago Sox's), Doug Sheenan (Knots Land), Jamison
Parker (Simon & Simon), Alex McCord (Airwolf), George Steinbrenner (New York Yankees owner),
John Denver, (just to name a few) politicians of all parties - Republican, Democrat, Independent
(which included congressmen, senators, governors and the like), others who were associated with
the Academy in some manner, the cottagers entourage and then us lowly "townies" (oops sorry I
guess we are not to say that any more who probably did not even realize that these people were
there in our presence!
I truthfully was never aware of the division of the town - lake - academy really until I met
David and it all really sunk in - it was there during my childhood - but I never realized it -
I never realy realized it existed so. Yet the division hit home more when David died in more
ways than one.) I spent a many lonely evening sitting at the front window looking out on Main
Street (or just an empty spot table or booth) after David died so I would not be alone in an
empty house (that I could not tolerate while David and Susie ran the streets or Culver & elswhere
with their friends) but yet I was alone even there - - - enjoying what I could afford - the
'famous chicken', a reuben sandwich (the best!), or just french fries or the deep fried mixed
veggie basket with spinach dip (the spinach dip was the best!!!) and a mist & coke - sitting
reflecting on the past - not thinking of the present or future - what went wrong - trying not to
think of what was ahead...
