Robert Lewis Neland, 95, of Culver, formerly of North Liberty, passed away during the early morning hours of Friday, May 9th with his loving family by his side.

Robert was born in South Bend on May 19, 1929, in South Bend, to Henry R. and Martha (Van Paris) Neland.

After graduating high school, he went on to serve his country proudly in the Korean Conflict as a member of the United States Navy.

He married the love of his life, Winifred A. Hartman on June 27, 1953. They shared 67 loving years together before her passing on February 6, 2021.

Robert worked for Armco Steel for 30+ years, before retiring in 1986.

He also loved the farming lifestyle and relaxing with a line in the water.

Robert is survived by his children, Colleen (Jim) Hughes of South Bend, Janine Grimmer of Jasper, Indiana, Larry (Sharon) Neland of North Liberty and Michael (Julia) Neland of South Bend. He was the proud grandfather of Dawn Lee, Lee (Raquel) Neland, Michelle (Shane) Whitmer, Joshua (Elizabeth) Neland, Alyssa Neland, Stephanie and Melissa Hughes, Chris (Mary) Grimmer, Keith Grimmer and great grandfather of 19.

Robert was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, daughter Vickie Lee, granddaughter Kimberly Hughes, his sisters, Nancy Ruskowski and Collette Williams.

As per Robert’s wishes cremation is to take place.

Friends may visit with the family from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Friday, May 16, 2025, in the Hanley and Sons Funeral Home, 23421 S. R. 23, South Bend, IN 46614 where a memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. with Fr. Terry Fisher officiating.

Robert will be laid to rest with his wife in the Sumption Prairie Cemetery of South Bend following service.

Winifred A. Neland, 86, formerly of North Liberty, passed away on Saturday, February 6, after an extended illness, in the company of her family.

Winifred was born in Mishawaka on March 5, 1934 to Frank and Nina (Glissman) Hartman.

On June 27, 1953, she married Robert L. Neland.

She retired from the Indiana Employment Office after 28 years as a testing operator.

She was a member of the St. Joseph County Homemakers Club. She enjoyed collecting bells, birdwatching, reading, and cooking and baking. Her greatest joy came from being with her family, especially her grandchildren.

Winifred is survived by her loving husband Robert, along with three daughters, Vicki (Dewayne) Lee of South Bend, Coleen (Jim) Hughes of South Bend, and Janine Grimmer of North Liberty; and two sons, Larry (Sharon) Neland of North Liberty and Michael (Julia) Neland of South Bend. She was the proud grandmother of 10: Dawn Lee, Lee Neland, Michelle (Shane) Whitmer, Joshua (Elizabeth) Neland, Alyssa Neland, Stephanie Hughes, Melissa Hughes, Chris (Mary) Grimmer, and Keith Grimmer, along with being the great-grandmother of 16 (with one on the way) and great-great-grandmother of two.

She was preceded in death by her parents, granddaughter Kimberly Hughes, and two brothers, Robert and Russell Hartman.

Friends may visit with the family on Thursday, February 11 from 4:00 until 8:00pm in the Hanley and Sons Funeral Home “Southwest Chapel”, 23421 State Road 23, South Bend, and one hour prior to the service.

A service will be held at 11:00am Friday, February 12 in the funeral home chapel.

She will be laid to rest in the Sumption Prairie Cemetery of South Bend at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Winifred's name to Hospice of St. Joseph County, 501 Comfort Place, Mishawaka, IN 46545.
