Columbus, Indiana Lawyer Honored

A very great legal honor came to Thomas C. Bigley, a native of Culver, when the well known Columbus, Idnaian lawyer ewas chosen president-elect of the Indiana State Bar Association at the organizatyion's recent annual meeting in Fort Wayne

The Citizen first learned of Mr. Bigley's forthcoming honor last spring from Theodore L. Locke, a prominent Indianapolis lawyer who for many years has been a Lake Maxinkuckee summer resident at 1412 East Shore Drive. At that time Mr. Locke wrote: "He is an ethical, upstanding, and competent lawyer and is highly deserving of the distinguished honor for which he is slated."

As president-elect, Mr. Bigley will serve until the end of 1959 ammunl meeting as State Chairman of DIstrict meetings and Institutes programs and will appoint local committees, probably in each Congressional District, to plan and supervise the Inditute programs on a local level.

Automatically President

At the close of the 1959 annual meeting Mr. Bigley automatically ascends to the presidency of the association.

Mr. Bigley is a partner in the law firm of Sharphackand Bigley at Columbus

Mr. Bigley was amitted to practice law in Inidiana in 1938. He received his B.S. degree from Indiana University in 1934 and his L.L.B. degree from Indiana Law School in 1938. Whilw at Indiana he became a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon social fraternity.

Mr. Bigley has engaged in the general practice of law at Columbus sicne 1943. before moving to Columbus he lived in Indianapolus where he was employed at First Bancredit Corporation and later as an attorney at RCA Manufacturing Coprortation.

Prominent Leader

In 1947 Mr. Bigley was State Chairman of the Junior Bar Conference of the American Bar Associationa and State Chairman of the Young Lawyers Section of the Indiana State Bar Association. From 1949 to 1953 he was a member of the State Board of Financial Institutions.

He is a member of the Methodist church and a former president of the Columbus Chamber of Commerce and Columbus Kiwanis Club. He is a member of the Columbia Club of Indianapolis and the Harrison Lake Country Club of Columbus

Born at Maxinkuckee

Tom Bigley's roots in Culver are very deep. He was born 45 years ago on the second floor of the now rather ancient two story building at Maxinkuckee Landing which is now occupied by Mrs. and Mrs. S. J. Rossa's grocery store. The flowing well at that location is a priceless childhood memory to him

Mr. Bigley's sister is Mrs. Josephine Rector, popular owner of Rector's Pharmacy. His twin sister, Thelma is the wife of Charles H. Reed, sales manager of the special porducts division of the National Biscuit Company in Detriot. The Reeds line in Royal Oak, Mich. His aunt Mrs. Gut T. Bigely, claims Culver as home but spends most of her time in FLordia. John Bigley, his first cousin, is the owner and operator of Bigely's famous Maxinkuckee orchards.

This past summer, Mr. Bigley, a widower since 1956, wass married to Eleanor Clay, M.D., who specializes in internal medicine in Columbus, Ind., The former Dr. CLay was graduated from DePau and the Yale University Medical School.

Father of Two Sons

Mr. Bigley's son, John Jr., 18 is now a junior at Indiana University after two years at Standofrd University. His younger son, Stephen, 13, is a 9th grader in Columbus schools.
