1900 - June 29 - New Store.
Aside from having a well stocked store at Maxinkuckee landing, containing everything in the
grocery and confectionery line, tobacco and cigars, ice cream, soft drinks etc , T. J. Bigley
& Son have opened a similar store near the Indianapolis landing known as the Indianapolis store,
where a complete line of general and fancy groceries, canned goods etc., can be found constantly
on hand. They solicit your trade and guarantee satisfaction. - Culver Herald
The original frame store building was erected in 1905 by
John Bigley's father, Guy T. Bigley, and also housed the telephone exchange
service. This structure was consumed by fire a short time later |

1908 - September 3 - The Bigley brothers are building a two story brick
building at Maxinkuckee landing. The lower story will be used for a general store
Bigley Store was built In 1908 by Guy and Chester Bigley with the help of their
father T.J. They sold groceries and other goods; as well as gas and kerosene. It
was to have a Tea Room. Living quarters were upstairs and the rear of the 2nd
floor also house the telephone company.
The one-story frame building owned by
Thomas Bigley;
at Maxinkuckee Landing and occupied as a store by Walter Smead was destroyed
by fire at 2 o'clock Tuesday. Smead claims a loss of $500 The building was about
to be moved off by the owner to make room for the brick store which the Bigley brothers
will erect this fall.

After buying out Chester Bigley's interest, Guy Bigley and his wife,
Mabel, operated the store.vbr>
1914 - May 28 - G. T . Bigley of Chicago is cleaning and fixing up the
store building at Maxinknckee Landing and will put in a stock of goods

and the present brick edifice was erected closer to the roadway |
The water wheel,was obtained from the old Academy Homestead, continued to
run for years, making the red brick building more picturesque, and furnishing unmistakable

It is said that Guy sold the store Guy Bigley sold the store in 1933 but
ads bearing the Bigley name continued to be found and other quips

Pictured above are Mr. and Mrs. Rossa in front of their grocery and food market in 1932,
shortly after they moved here from Milwaukee, Wis. The building remains pretty much the same
today except that the roof over the gasoline pumps has been removed. |

1957 - Aug. 28 - Mr. and Mrs . S. J. Rossa are marking the 25th anniversary of
the opening of their grocery store and food market at 1352 East Shore Drive. The business also,
sells Standard gasoline and Mr. Rossa is a veteran realtor, having specialized in Lake properties
for many years

An era in the history of Maxinkuckee Landing is coming to a close with the clearance sale of
the building, merchandise, and fixtures of the S. J . Rossa Grocery, located at 1352 East Shore
Drive, Culver . Their full-page ad will be noted elsewhere in this issue of The Citizen.
Supplying the area with food stuffs, drugs, hardware items, etc., the Rossas have been Standard

Sig Rossa and his wife,
the former Juelett Sherry, say their future plans are very uncertain at this time. However, they
do plan a relaxed visit with their daughter, Mrs. A. R. Barnes, and four grandchildren in St. Joe,
Mich.
After the much anticipated visit, this well-known local couple hope that with their time their
own now, some of their dreams will become realities

The Wednesday, OCTOBER 6, 1965 issue of the citizen had the following ad: Due to

Grocery, on State Road 117 on the East side of Lake Maxlnkuckee, Culver , Ind... |
The two-story brick building was razed in September 1969 to
make way for a second lake cottage to be built on the lot. The aerial view
shows the original Bigley cottage still remains on the lakefront. But all
were demolished in 2015, along with the lakefront cottage |

Just exactly when the iconic water wheel disaapeared is unknowm bu more than likely it was
demolished in 1969 along with the store.
2024 - Aerial view of where the store once stood now surrounded by a high near solid
fence. amd the view of the corner as it appears today, the address has been discontinued and the
property merged into 1346 E. Shore Dr. |
