It seems that she must of died before 1880 as Samuel Wise aet 19 as son and single and Hattie Wise aet 4 as grand daughter are listed on census with his mother and Hattie's obituary states that she was the daughter Samuel Wise and Frances VanSchoiack

Mr. Vanschoiack was born in Fleming County, Kentucky, December 18, 1812.

His early life was marked by no event of particular interest, until the year 1833, when he left the familiar haunts of his childhood, and removed to the State of Indiana. He located in Wayne County, and in 1845 removed to the State of Illinois. After a residence of five years in that State, he returned to Wayne County, Indiana, and was there engaged in agricultural pursuits until 1863. He came to Marshall County in that year, and purchased the farm upon which he now resides.

In his early life he enjoyed but few educational advantages, yet he possessed a keen desire for knowledge, and availed himself of every opportunity for gratifying that desire. By a diligent course of study he prepared himself for the vocation of teaching, and taught school during the winter seasons. He was always provident, and made it a r ule to save a portion of his income, however small it might be. Thus, as years rolled on, he found his fortune growing, very surely if very slowly; and as it increased, he wisely invested his means in land, establishing his prosperity upon a sure foundation.

Throughout his life he has made it a practice to operated within the bounds of legitimate business, and avoid all the spec ulations or enterprises of an uncertain nature; and while he has made no rapid strides, he has progressed, step by step, to a position of independence, and has acquired a competence in worldly goods.

His farm which is situated on the bank of the beautiful Maxenkuckee Lake, is one of the finest in Union Township, and in all its various departments, bears evidence of c ultivation by a skilled hand. It has been the aim of its owner to conduct his farm in such a manner as to merit the title "a good farmer," and this ambition has stim ulated him, to the exclusion of all desire for notoriety through the channels of public office. He is a plain farmer, and his life has been even and uneventful; yet to those who know him, he is a superior man; honorable and upright in all his dealings with the world, kind to the poor, and liberal in his support of public enterprises and religious and educational institutions, he has gained the good will of his fellow-men, and is honored by all who know him.

On the 27th of March, 1838, he was married, in Wayne County, Indiana, to Miss Esther B ulla, who has proved a loving and devoted wife, and whose assistance and cheerf ul encouragement bore a conspicuous part in her husband’s struggle with poverty, and his ultimate triumph. His farm on the banks of Maxinkuckee was a model. It was one of the best in this part of the country. His lands in those rather early days comprised 105.80 acres on the lake, in Section 27. The farm was pretty well down toward the south end of the lake. One pec uliar feature was that the public highway ran right through the barnyard in early times. In order to pass through, a person had to open and close gates at either side of the barnyard. East of the land, Mr. Vanschoiack had 120 acres in Section 26. All his property was in the old Indian reserve.


Mr. Vanschoiack was married, March 27, 1838, in Wayne County, Indiana, to Esther Bulla. There were twelve children, eight of whom living in 1881. These were Francis A., Isaac A., Lavina E., Louisa J., William J ., Elizabeth R., Elsa B., and Edward P.

Mr. Vanschoiack was active in public affairs. He held the offices of justice and township trustee.

L T Vanschoiack for whom this sketch is prepared is a native of Fleming county Ky born on the waters of Mill Creek December 18 1812 the son of Reuben and Frances Allen Vanschoiack both natives of the same state

His paternal grandfather John S Vanschoiack was a native of Pennsylvania and an ealy settler of Maryland from which state he emigrated many ears ago to Kentucky settling in Mason county He was a soldier in the revolutionary war and died in Kentucky many years ago The subject's maternal grandfather was Robert Allen a member of one of the prominent families of Kentucky and at one time a very wealthy planter and slave holder After their marriage Reuben and Frances Vanschoiack lived for some time in Kentucky and the father afterward started to California but died upon the plains before reaching his destination His widow died in her native state in 1850 Their family consisted of six children three of whom are still living viz Louisa wife of William, Grover, L T, and Elizabeth wife of James Campbell

Louden T. VanSohoiack was born in Flening county, Ky., Dec. 18 1812, the son of Reuben and Francis Allen VanShoiack, both natives of the same state.

He came to Indiana when a young man and followed the voation of teaching school

March 27, 1838 he was married to Miss Esther Bulla, to which untion were born tweleve children, seven of whom are living - Isaac A., Lavina E, Louisa J., WIlliam J., ELizabeth R., Elsa B., and Edward E.

Their married life continued together for a period of 60 years. His wife preceded him in death eight years ago.

He united with the Christain church in the year 1846, and continued his membeship through life.

He removed to Marshall county in 1863, purchased a farm on the banks of beautiful Maxinkuckee lake, where he followed the pursits of griculture, and resided until his death, which occurred July 27, 1907, aged 94 years 7 months and 8 days.

The funeral services were held Tuesday at 2 p.m. conducted by Rev. Coyle of Lucerene, Ind.

The interment was in Washington Cemetery.

On the 27th of March, 1838, he was married, in Wayne County, Indiana, to Esther Bulla born 15 July 1820 in Indiana Oct 15, 1898, age 78y-2m-29d Marshall Indiana daughter of Isaac Bulla and Mary Brice Wade.

1909 - September 16, - The Van Schoiacks have straightened the road back of the old home place and Peter Spangler has commenced to move the buildings over onto the farm land.

Sale of VanShoiack Land

1911, Sep 21 - At the sale of the farm land of the Vanshoiack estate on the East side last Saturday the folowing parcels were disposed of by C. A. Bondurant, commisioner:

Farm No 1, 79 acres, sold to Sidny A. Vaughn for $4800.

Farm No. 2, 82 acres, sold to M. T Loudon for $3060.

Farm No. 3 , 6 Acres sold to W. Vanshooiack for $510

Farm No. 4 38 1/2 acres sold to George Vanshoiack for $1710.

The aggregate of the 205 1/2 acres was $10,080, fully up to

the appraisment.

There are 25 fine lake front lots yet to be sold.

Death of Libbie VanSchoiack.

Elizabeth VanSchoiack died in the Methodist Memorial Home at Warren, Ind., Sunday night, about midnight, after an invalidism of about two years.

She will be brought to her brother William's on Wednesr!ay evening, and the funeral will be held there at 2 o'clock Thursday. The burial will be in Washington cemetery.

The service will be conducted by the minister conneoted with the Home.

Elizabeth (or Libbie, as she was better known) was born on the old home place on the east shore of the lake 64. years ago and lived there until the death of her very aged father, L.T. VanSohoiack, seven years ago.

After that, and until going to Warren two years ago, she made her home with her brothers and sisters.

Her mother died in October, 1898. - Jul 16 1914 Citizen
