James Clifford "Cliff" Courtney  

James C. "Cliff" Courtney, 85, a will-known Indianapolis lawyer who served as a top aide to Democratic senators and governors died yesterday.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Thomas Aquinas Church. Calling will be held from 4 to 9 p.m. today in Flanner & Buchanan Broad Ripple Mortuary.

A native of Linton, he graduated from Butler University and taught for 15 years at the Park School. During that time he attended night casses at Indiana University Law School in Indianapolis and began practicing law in 1944.

Active in Democratic Party politics, he held numerous state and local offices, including the post of Indiana revenue commissioner in the administration of Gov. Mattherw E. Welsh.

He was alongtime staff aide to fromer U. S. Sen. Birch E. Bayh Jr., D-Ind.

Courtney ran unsuccessfully for Marion County probate judge and the Indiana Senate.

Gov. Evan Bayh called Courtney a lifelong friend. - -

He had the qualities of compassion, committment and concern for all. Cliff was always a close advisor to my father and I learned much from him. Few have matched Cliff's service to his fellow Hoosiers in either quality or quanity.

I will miss his wise counsel, but most of all, I will miss his friendship." Bayh said. - -

Courtney had served as persident of the Indianapolis Board of Sanitary Commissioners and the State Board of Law Examiners. He had been a member of the Indianapolis Board of Public Saftey and the boards of Butler University Alumni Association, University Heights Hospital, the Greater Indianapolis Progress Committee, the 500 Festival Assocoiates and the American Income Life Insurance Co.

He served as president of the Indianapolis Athletic Club, was a member of ther Economic Club of Indiana, and had been president of the Lake Maxinkuckee Association.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Daniel Courtney McShane Scholarship Fund at Brebeuf Preparatory School.

He was the widower of Margauerite H. Courtney.

Surviviors include daughters, Jane McShane and Joan Beal; son James C. Courtney Jr.; sister, Mary Courtney Talbott; 13 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. Nov. 1990 Bloomfield News Bloomfield, Greene, Indiana

Herschel Courtney dies at Indianapolis; of Newberry died at 4:30pm Fri at the Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis where he had been a patient for six weeks. he had been in failing health for 1yr. He was born 4 June 1897, the son of Clifford & Lillie Ann Owen Courtney. He had lived at Gary most of his life before his retirement he had been a pipefitter, engineer. He was a member of First Methodist Church of Linton, In. His wife Goldie preceded him in death in 1962. Survivors include brother James C. Courtney, of Indy, two sisters, Mrs. Chester Talbott & Mrs. Arthur Barnett of Indy. The body was returned to the Welch & Cornett Funeral Home in Linton where services were held at 2pm today with Rev. W.T. Murphy officiating. Burial will be made in Fairview Cemetery

I’m trying to find some information about family who used to have property at Lake Maxinkuckee. Pretty sure they were on East Shore, near the golf course, and could see CMA from the lakefront, though it would have been quite a distance to walk.

James C. Courtney and Marguerite (Higgins) Courtney were my great-grandparents. They lived in Indianapolis and had a summer home on Maxinkuckee where my mother and her family (McShane) would spend summers with them. Both passed on in the late 1980s. I believe the home was sold in the mid-80s, but cannot verify that.

I came across the name James Courtney on the website as President of the Lake Association in 1977. Wondering if you have any nformation you are able to pass along?

By no means was my family rich or famous – I’m simply trying to learn more about them.

You are amazing – I couldn’t find any of this to save my life!

Says James/Marguerite owned the cottage at 1412 from 1979-85, but I’m fairly certain they purchased prior to 1979. In addition, I believe they may have had a smaller cottage on the east side of East Shore (non lakefront) at some point prior.

Is there a way you can help me verify either of these things?

The work you’ve done is impressive – I can only imagine the time, effort, and love you’ve put into piecing everything together. It’s really a huge help to folks like me, who have very, very young memories of Maxinkuckee and little else.
