Baxter Family

Four generations of the family of Arthur R. Baxter have enjoyed the east shore region of Lake Maxinkuckee since the year 1915. It was in that year that Arthur R. Baxter and his wife Frances Doyle Baxter brought their son Emory to enter Culver Military Academy and discovered the beauties and recreational advantages of the area.



In 1917 Arthur Baxter purchased the Hazeldine cottage, 1470 East Shore Road, and soon also acquired the M. E. Clark cottage next door, 1460 East Shore Road , Eventually the property owned by Mr. Degendorf, 1450 East Shore Road, was secured to house the growing family.

Emory Baxter married Ruth Fromm, having two children: Robert Russell Baxter and Marjorie R. Baxter. Emory and Ruth now live in Indianapolis and have five grandchildren.

R. Norman Baxter married Jane Fargo; having four children: Arthur R. Baxter, Mary Baxter Lysell; Elsie Baxter Heckel and R. Norman Jr. "Rick". As family growth continued. Mr. and Mrs. R. Norman Baxter moved to Dayspring Farm on Maxinkuckee Road and their daughter Elsie Heckel and her husband Tom of St. Louis, now own and occupy the original cottage at 1470 East Shore Drive, with four children: David, Mary, Debbie and Marjorie.

Delight Baxter married Wayne Bailey and now reside in California. The have two daughters Sally Fifer Bernstein and Nancy Black and five grandchildren.

Fredrick L. Baxter married Virginia Wagoner, now of Florida, and has one daughter Sue.

R. Norman Baxter's daughter Mary Baxter married Harry Lysell, brother and brother-in-law of Betty and Charlie Maull who lived next door to the old Winslow cottage just opposite of the club house on the Maxinkuckee County Club. They now live in California and are the parents of Betty Jane Hudson of Indianapolis and Michael, Bill, and Katherine all of California.

R. Norman Baxter's son, Arthur R. Baxter married Nancy Niblack and they own a farm on Queen Road. Their six children are: John Baxter, Boston, Massachusetts; Marybeth Baxter Burke, Columbus, Ohio; Janet Baxter Hale, Christina Village, Delaware; James and Arthur Jr., Indianapolis; and Daniel Niblack Baxter, Springfield, Arizona. There are six grandchildren.


Richard Norman Baxter Jr. married Julia Clift. They now own the cottage at 1460 East Shore Drive and have two children: Ben and Sam, three and four years old.

Lake Maxinkuckee has been the summer resort for the Baxter family for over 65 years. Today the golf course is becoming a rallying point again, with the fourth generation taking over. An interesting side-light concerns a friendship which developed at Lake Maxinkuckee between Arthur Raymond Baxter and Dr. Frank Hugh Sparks, co-founder and President of Arvin Industries and an outstanding President of Wabash College in Crawfordsville.

Dr. Sparks, as a young man living in Culver, would visit the lake area and walk along the east shore's then well worn path that extended from the old Bigley store access road south along the lake. Dr. Sparks remembers saying to himself as he talked with the people living in those "wonderful houses", including Mr. Arthur Raymond Baxter [sic as written], that some day he too would have a house along those lovely shores and would strive for a good education and success in business to achieve his dream.

Many years later in the 1950's, the Baxter and Spark [Sparks] name became intwinded [entwined] at Wabash College. Dr. Sparks provided the impetus for interesting Arthur Raymond Baxter [sic as written], who had quit school at 16 to support his family, but went on to be a very successful industrialist in Indianapolis and admirer of young Frank Hugh Sparks' work at Arvin, to provide scholarship help to worthy students at Wabash. Mr. Baxter's great love of education and admiration for the "eager young man on the walk" found expression in building the Arthur R. Baxter Hall at Wabash College. Thus Lake Maxinkuckee had a significant impact on not only the lives of many families, but also on the educational opportunity in Indiana. For it was through the work of Dr. Sparks and Mr. Baxter that the Associated Colleges of Indiana got started which provided a means for immense corporate support of independent colleges around the state. Eventually, Dr. Sparks took this concept to the national level where today the Council for Independent Colleges serves schools all over the country.

Indeed, Lake Maxinkuckee has seen some very interesting historical events and meetings, and such events will surely continue on into the future. - Arthur R. and Nancy Niblack Baxter.

Generation One

His mother was an aunt to Alma B. Jordan Kittle (Mrs. John Sloane)

Arthur Reyburn Baxter was a prominent figure Indianapolis. He was president of the Keyless Lock Company and worked there for over forty years.

Keyless Lock Company, successors to the Morris Lock Company and the L. B. Williams Lock Company of Seward, Neb. In November, 1892, the company was reorganized, and a removal made to this city to the premises now occupied on the Bee Line railroad. It is a stock company and backed up by $100,000 capital. Mr. Arthur Jordan is president; Mr. Geo. L. Barney, general manager; Mr. A. F. Potts, treasurer, and Mr. J. L. Clough, secretary

As an added note - Arthur Jordan was Arthur Reyburn Baxter's uncle.

Arthur Baxter was also known for his financial and civic contributions to the city of Indianapolis including the building of the Scottish Rite Cathedral and his donation of the 63-bell carillon. He was also on the board of directors for Riley and Methodist Hospital boards, a member of the Rotary Club, Meridian Hills Country Club, Colomubia Club, Indianapolis Athletic Club, the Central Ave. Methodist Church and was a 33rd degree Mason.

In 1936, he founded the Baxter Foundation whose charities supported many different organizations around Indiana for 50 years and including the Baxter Foundation gift of the Arthur R. Baxter Hall at Wabash College, which opened in 1964.

Baxter Hall was designed by Eric Gugler, the college’s major architect during the 25 years following World War II. Members of Baxter’s family attended Wabash and served the college in various capacities.

Arthur Baxter also served as the state senator for Marion County from 1920 to 1925.

Emory Russell Baxter was also a leader in the community. He served in the Army Air Forces World War II and was the ranking colonel of the ROTC in Indianapolis.

Emory owned both Baxter Rural Electrification and the Baxter Co. a distributer of Hupmobile and Studebaker automobiles. He was president of the Baxter Foundation for 25 years, a member of the YMCA board of trustees, life trustee at the Indianapolis Museum of Art, board member of the Boy Scout Council, was past president of the Advisory Council of the Marion County Juvenile Court and was a 32nd degree Mason. He received an honorary degree from the University of Indianapolis and was a recipient of the Sagamore of the Wabash.

He was a member of the Kiwanis Club of Indianapolis and rhe Maxinkuckee Country Club.

Emory R. Baxter, was re-elected president of Crossroads Rehabilitation Center, Inc., Indianapolis, at a meeting of the board of directors held June 17, 1968. and a director beginiing in 1963

They built and moved to Dayspring Farm on Maxinkuckee Road (18th B Rd. with a seperate house at 16781 and 16787) and their daughter Elsie Heckel and her husband Tom of St. Louis, owned and occupy the original cottage at 1470 East Shore Drive for several years around and after 1986 and is now (2015) owned by Elsie's children.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday for Phoenix Gazette columnist Orien Fifer, who died Saturday of kidney failure following a lengthy illness.

Services will be at 2 p.m. at the Church of the Beatitudes with burial to follow at Greenwood Memorial Park. He was 70.

Fifer had lived in Phoenix since 1952 when he became managing editor of the Arizona Republic, a sister publication to the Gazette. In 1960, he became day managing editor of the Republic and then in 1966 he switched to the Gazette as a five-day-a-week columnist.

The son of a Methodist minister, Fifer began his journalism career as a high school student in Indianapolis and after his 1925 graduation from DePauw University where he was managing editor of the student newspaper, Fifer was hired by the Indianapolis Star. Fifer later worked for the Associated Press in Chicago, Madison, Wis., Milwaukee and New York City before returning to Indiana and a position with the Indianapolis News. He rose from reporter to assistant managing editor of the news before moving to Phoenix.

Eugene C. Pulliam, who publishes newspapers in both Phoenix and Indianapolis, recalled his long friendship with Fifer and said he "always had the good will and respect of his fellow journalists."

Survivors include his wife, Mary, two daughters, Mrs. Saul Bernstein, Thousand Oaks, Calif., and Mrs. Murray Hutchison, Palo Verde Estates, Calif., a stepson, Steve Elam, and four grandchildren.

Baxter, Nancy NiblackAuthor, journalist – Culver . Nancy is the author of eight books on Indiana and Civil War history, including the Heartland Chronicle Series (a historical fiction series for children). The Movers was the Waldenbooks Preferred Reader selection for Atlantic states 1987; Lords of the Rivers was the National Association of Presswomen Best Novel of the Year 1990.

In addition to being an author and publisher, she has been a teacher and reporter for the Indianapolis News.

Nancy Baxter is a fifty-year Christian Scientist, a class-taught student and a member of The Mother Church and branch church in the northern Indianapolis area. Nancy Baxter has edited more than 200 books and is now senior editor at Hawthorne Publishing in Carmel, Indiana

Nancy Baxter is the 2000 recipient of the Indiana Historical Society Eli Lilly Lifetime Achievement Award in Indiana History.

Nancy and her husband began Guild Press in 1987

Guild Press of Indiana Sold to Larger Media Company

Oct. 17, 2001--Guild Press of Indiana, best known to Civil War fans as the company that brought the Official Records of the War of the Rebellion to CD-Rom format at an affordable price, has been sold to Emmis Communications Corp. of Indianapolis.

Emmis Communications Corp. owns radio, television and magazine holdings. This is its first venture into book publishing. Terms of the deal were not announced according to reports in the Indianapolis Star.

Besides the OR, Guild Press has published books and CDs on the Civil War, American frontier history and Indiana history. The company has published more than 200 titles since it was founded in 1987. Emmis officials said they will will work on expanding Guild's line.

Before the advent of CD-Rom formatting, researchers who wanted to cons ult the Official Records had to either cons ult often crumbling library editions or purchase the set in bound form at a cost of thousands of dollars. Initial CD based editions cost several hundred dollars.

Guild Press was the first company to price the disk at under $100, making it affordable to individuals, small libraries and even schools. In addition to the price advantage, Guild's search capabilities were hailed by most reviewers and users as superior to alternative versions. They also produced another disk holding the official record of Naval operations.

Guild Press is currently in the process of producing a DVD format disk that will include the Civil War CD-ROMs (Official Records of the Army and Navy), Southern Historical Society Papers, Confederate Military History, Campaigns of the Civil War, The Confederate Generals Speak, the Atlas of the Official Records and the Medical and Surgical Records of the Union and Confederate Armies. Their website currently offersed this at a pre-production price of $200.

No details were announced as to whether Emmis wo uld continue producing the Civil War CDs or what the pricing structure wo uld be if they did.

Emmis Communications operates Indianapolis Monthly, as well as city and regional magazines in Los Angeles, Texas and Cincinnati. It also publishes Country Sampler, a national crafts magazine. Guild Press, based in Carmel, Indiana, employs three staffers, who work with authors and book designers mostly on a freelance basis, said Nancy Niblack Baxter, founder and former owner of Guild.

All three employees will remain with the company. Baxter will serve as president, and longtime literary agent Andy Murphy will work as marketing director.

The backing of a large corporation such as Emmis, however, with its increased capital and advertising resources, will allow Guild to be the kind of company of which Baxter could only dream before, she said.

"We weren't on the market. They just wanted to buy us, and they liked us," she said. "We thought, 'Why not?' They will help us realize our potential."

Emmis owns 15 television stations, plus 20 FM and three AM domestic radio stations, including Indianapolis holdings WIBC-AM (1070), WNOU-FM (93.1) and WENS-FM (97.1). It also owns stations serving the nation's largest markets of New York, Los Angeles and Chicago.

Emmis Books has been created to expand and build upon the Emmis' current regional book publishing division, Guild Press, which will become an imprint of Emmis Books. Nancy Baxter remains as President of Guild Press.

They were are a Microsoft Independent Software Vendor (ISV) and sold Navision Solutions in the Midwest from 1994 to 2002.

He was a graduate of Culver Military Academy 1973, and the University of Denver.

Junior Ted Somerville raised more than $10,000 for the American Cancer Society this summer in a run from Indianapolis to Culver. Ted, a member of Park Tudor's cross-country team, made the journey to honor the memory of his father Chip, who died two years ago after a year-and-a-half fight with a brain tumor. Ted timed the run to coincide with what wo uld have been his father's 50th birthday, saying, "Because he graduated from Culver Military Academy and grew up on Lake Maxinkuckee, my father often enjoyed this 120-mile route along the back roads of Indiana. As a matter of fact, this was the last trip I took with my father." Ted was joined during several legs of his journey by Park Tudor classmates.
