Manana - Hervey Bates & Coffin Cottage  



It is ASSUMERD that this is 1480 E. Shore Lane the Coffin cottage "Portledge" but nothing as yet has been found to defintely claim that it is; more than likely the the extra Bates cottages were torn down

The biggest clue is the shoreline - the street lights -

1904 - Sep 8 - Miss Helen Royse of Lafayette and Mis Mabel Talbott arrivied in an automobile driven by Mr. H. B. Perrin for a visit at Manana

1905 - May 25 Major and Mrs. Hervey Bates have opened Manana for the summer. Hervey Bates IV is spending the summer with his grandparents.

1905 - June 22 - Miss Charlotte Cathcart, Mr and Mrs. John Parrin and Mrs. H Bates Jr.. of Indianapolis, are guests of Major and Mrs. H. Bates at Manana .

1905 - Aug. 10 - Mrs Ada Carsy of Indianapolis is visiting Mr. H. Bates at Manana

1906 - May 10 - Major and Mrs. Hervey Bates of Indianapolis have opened Manana for the season

1906 - Jun 28 - John Perrin Hr. of New Haven is a guest of his grandparents at Manana

1906 - Aug 2 - Harry Schlotzhauer Jr. , who has been visiting Major and Mrs Bates at Manana , returned to Indianapolis this week

1906 - Aug. 16 - Fire at The Lake
    Power House at the Bates Cottage Destroyed Sunday Night.

    On Sunday evening about 8:30 o'clock the power house at Manana cottage, owned by Hervey Bates of Indianapolis, caught fire from some unknown cause and was completely consumed.

    The building was tow stories. The tower story contained a gasoline engine, dynamo and a water pressure boiler. The upper story was used as a repair and carpenter shop by the proprietor.

    Fortunately the night was still and other property was not endangered. The loss is covered by insurance.

1911 - Aug 17 - On Monday morning a number of the East side young people gathered at Manana to congratualateMajor Hervey Bates on his birthday. A little extempraneous program was given. Migon McGibney and Dorothy Wilson's reciting was very pleasing and the clog dance by Carolyn Coffin and Shontze Shoute would have been more appreciated if better executed. Atfer wishing the Major many more jouyous birthdays they departed.

1912 Apr 25 - Jay Bartlett has completed the improvements on Mayor Bates' summer home. These inculde an enlargement of the rear of the house which gives an additiional room up staits, an extension of the south end of the living room and the repainting of the building

    All who have had the pleasure of an acquaintance with Maj. Hervey Bates, who has been a member of the Lake Maxinkuckee's summer colony for a long period of years, will apprciate the following reference to him by Russel M. Seeds writing to the Indianapolis Sta from Tuscon, Arizaona: "who appears to have found out here in the desert the fountain of eternal youth. He is celedbrating his 90th Christmas this year., and the way he can hop up two filghts of stairs to hie luxurious apartments in the old Pueblo Club makes me dizzy. The sam courteous, kind gentleman as of yore time, has dealt as gently with him as he has always dealth with human kind"

1922 - Jun 21 - Mraj. Hervey Bates, who has been in Pasadena Calif., much of the time since last fall has arrived at Manana cottage for the summer

1927 - Jun 1 - S. E. Keen has just sold another East Side Cottage, the larger of the Bates cottages .

1929 - Jan 30 - Hervey Bates, Pioneer Cottager, Died at 97.... Mr. Bates had been coming to the lake every year for a long time and only sold his two cottages about a year ago when he became to feeble to make the trip each summer....
