Hervey Bates III/Jr (1858 - 1939)
...Hervey Bates III was born at Indianapolis in October, 1858.
He was educated in the city public schools, in the Phillips Exeter Academy and in Harvard University.
He began his career through experience as an apprentice at the machinist's trade and for a number of years
was connected with the Atlas Engine Works.
Mr. Bates has served almost from this beginning as president of the American Hominy Company, one of the
large and important industries of Indianapolis.
In 1891 he married Susan Martingale. Of their two children the only survivor is Hervey Bates, representing the

Mrs. Harvey Bates also died last Saturday. She was at her home in Harbor Springs, Michigan.
Funeral services were conducted yesterday in Indianapolis at the home of her brother,
Charles Martindale. Mrs Bates lived in Indianapolis until recently where the family moved to
Pasadena, Calif. She was a member of an old and prominent family of the state. She is

Mrs. Grace Wasson Bates, 62 years old, daughter of the founder of H P. Wasson & Co.,
died in Huntington Memorial Hospital at Pasadena, Cal., Wednesday night,
relatives here were informed yesterday.

went there late in November.
Funeral This Afternoon. Survivors are the husband and two sons, Hiram Wasson McKee of
Indianapolis and Maj. Edward L. McKee of Santa Monica, Cal.
Her first husband, Edward Lodge McKee, was president and founder of the old Merchants
Heat and Light Company here and later vice-president of the Indiana National Bank.
