Retired Publisher Julian Bobbs Dies

    Indianapolis (UPI) _ Julian Bobbs, Indianapolis, the retired president of Bobbs-Merrill Publishing CO. died yesterdau in an Indianapolis hospital. He was 79.

    Bobbs was a native of Indianapolis and bevame president of the publishing firm after the death of his father in 1926. The company was founded by the father, william C. Bobbs in 1902

    Bobbs was a meber of a famous Hoosier family that included artists and a renowned surgeon - The Star Press Mar 05, 1973 Muncie Indiana


Julian Bobbs, Former President of Bobbs-Merril Firm, Dies
    Julian Bobbs, 79, 8080 North Pennsylvania Street, retried president of the Bobbs-Merril Publishing Company, died yesterday in Methodist Hospital.

    Mr. Bobbs was a native of Indianapolis, became president of the publishing firm after the death od hois father,William C. Bobbs, in 1926. The company was founded by the elder Bobbs in 1902

    After his retirement from the firm in 1929, Mr. Boobs acquired and became president of the ebner Myers Paint & Varnish Co. and of the Enterprise Iron Fense Company in 1931 He retired from these companies in 1935 to devote his time to the supervision of numerous presonal business investments.

    Mr. Bobbs attended the Benjamin Harriosn ELementary School here and was graduated from the Lawrenceville (Me.) Academy in 1912.

    After attending Princeton University for two years, Mr. Bobbs transferred to Wabash College, from which he graduated in 1916

    During World War I, he served as a field artillery captain in the United States Expeditionary Forces in France.

    Mr. Bobbs' stepmother, who died earlier this year, was the noted Hoosiuer artist Mrs. ruth Pratt Bobbs.

    His great uncle Dr. John Strong Bobbs, achieved fame in medical circles whe he preformed the first successful surgery for the removal of gall stones here in 1867. Dr. Bobbs the was professor of surgery and dean of the faculty at the Old Medical College of Indiana.

    Mr. Bobbs was a member of Second Presbyterian Church, University Club, Dramatic Club, Columbia Club, Contemporary Club, Woodstock Club, and Meridian Hills Country Club.

    At Delray Beach, FLa. where Mr. Bobbs spent winters for many years, he was a member of the Delray Beach Yacht Club, COuthry Club of Flordia, Little Club and Ocean Beach Club.

    Since the early 1930s Mr. Bobbs had spent summer month sailing off Northport Point, Mich., where he was a member of the Great Lakes Cruising Club. He was noted there for his charting of navigable waters and harbors of northern Lake Huron.

    Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in the Gothic Chapel at Crowon Hill Cemetery.

    Friends may call after 3 p.m. today in FLanner and Buchanan Fall Creek Mortuary.

        William Ray Adams, 51 president of the j. D> Adams Manufacturing Company, Indianapolis, and Murdue M. E. graduate of the class of 1910, died Friday night at Los Angles, Calif., where he had been vacationing.

        Two weeks ago he underwent an emergency operation in Los Angles.

        The Adams family resides at 4936 North Meridian Stree Indianapolis.

        Mr. Adams and his brother Roy Elder Adams, chairman of the Adams company board, and a Purdue 1903 graduate, sons of the late J. D. Adams, founder of the road machinery company, have been associated with the company ever since their graduation. Both are members of the Phi Kappa Pai fraternity chapter at Purdue. Roy ELder Adams married Miss Leona Haywood, daughter of Mrs. George P. Haywood an the late Mr. Haywood of Lafayette.

      William R. Adams Dies in California
        President of Manufacturing Concern In West For Vacation

        William Ray Adams, 51 year o ld, president of the J. D. Adams Manufacuting Company here, manufactures of road building machinery for world comsumption, died last night in Los Angles, Cal., where he had been vacationing.

        Mr. Admas underwent an emergency operation in Los Anfeles two weeks ago. Complications ensued and he failed to rally.

        The eldest son of J. D. Adams and a life-long resident of Indianapolis, Mr. Adams resided at 4936 North Meridian street.

        He had been associated with the road machinery firm, founded by his father, since a young man.

        Graduate of Purdue

        Survivors are the widow, Mrs. Helen Johnson Adams; two daughters: Miss Jane Adams and Mrs. Louis McLennen of Cambridge, Mass; hree grandchildren: Adams McClennen, Jane McLennen and helen McLennen;and a brother Roy E. Adams, chairman of the board of the company.

        Prominent in civic and social affairs, Mr. Adams was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, the Indiana Chamber of Commere, the Indianapolis Athletic Club, the Columbia Club, Woodstock Club, and the Rotary Club.

        He was a graduate of Purdue University and was a member of Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity

        Funeral arrangements have not been made.

        Business Leaders Pay tribute

        Leaders in the business and civic life of the city were among those who mourned the death of Mr Adams.

        Howard T. Griffith, president of the Associated Employers of Indianapolis amd president of the Udell Works said: "In the passing of William Ray dams, Indianapolis has suffered a tremedous loss. His memory will always be an inspriation to those of us whoe were privileged to know him best".

        Frederick E. Matson, Indianapolis attorney, director and counselor for the firm of J. D. Manufacturing Company, in paying tribute to the career of Mr. Adams asserted: "Mrs. Matson and I have known his family for many years. He was a man of the highest type and a capable businessman and was devoted to his family. His passing on is a distinct loss to the community and is a source of sincere grief to all his firends". - 6 Apr 1940 Indianapolis Star
