    James P. Coplen, Bank President And Civic Leader, Succumbs At 56

      James P. Coplen, President of National Bank of Logansport, died at 5:15 p.m. Saturday

      He suffered an apparent heart attack in his yard at 2612 High Street Road and was dead on arrival at Memorial Hospital. He was 56 years old.

      Born Feb. 2,1919, in Texarkana, Ark., he was the son of L.D. and Juanita Down Coplen. The mother survives at Forest, Ind.

      He was married May 30, 1941, to Virginia H. Clark, who also survives.

      Coplen has served in numerous positions of leadership in community activities since his election as president of the National Bank of Logansport in 1963.

      He also was chairman of the board of the First National Bank at Kokomo where he started in the banking business as a teller in 1946.

      A former Howard County Deputy Treasurer, Coplen was a member of the board of directors of the Indiana State Chamber of Commerce, a position to which he was recently re-elected. He was past president of the Indiana Bankers' Association, having been elected to that post in 1972; past president of the Logansport Rotary Club; past president of both the Logansport and Kokomo Chambers of Commerce. Former campaign chairman for the United Way, he was chairman of the local 200 Plus Club.

      He served on the Senior Management and Legislative Committee of the Indiana Banking Association and was an officer in Region Four of the Indiana Banking Association. Formerly, he was director of the Russiaville State Bank and was a past president of the North Central Conference of the American Institute of Banking. He was a former vice-president and director of the Howard County United Fund, former director and treasurer of the Howard County Mental Health Association, former secretary and treasurer of the Howard County Livestock Feeders Association and past director of the Kokomo Rotary Club. -

      Coplen was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Scottish Rite of Indianapolis, Murat Temple of Indianapolis, Logansport Shrine Club, Russiaville Masonic Lodge (Past Master), Scottish Rite Club of Howard County (Past President), Indianapolis Athletic Club and the Logansport American Legion.

      He was a graduate of Russiaville High School Indiana Business College at Kokomo and Northwestern University.

      He served on the advisory board of the Indiana University Regional Campus at Kokomo.

      During World War II he served as a bomber pilot in the Army Air Corps, flying four-engine bombers out of England.

      Surviving with tne wife and mother are a son, Michael, at home; two daughters, Mrs. Janet Bradshaw, Danville, Ky., and Mrs Linda K. Zabawa, Pine, Colo.; and one grandchild. One brother preceded him in death.

    COPLEN Services for James P. Coplen, 56, of 2G12 High Street Rd., president of the National Bank of Logansport, will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Kroeger Funeral Home. Burial will be in St. Pa ul's Cemetery, Forest. Friends may call after 2 p.m. Monday.
