Norman C. Michels has been appointerd assistant vice president in charge of engineering for the United Tennessee Coal & Iron Divison, it was announced today by Arthur W. Wiebel, TCI president. The appointment becomes effective Dec. 1

Mr. Michels comes to Birmingham from Pittsburgh, where he has been serving as chief engineer-project development, with United States Steel's Engineer Division.

Born at Spokane, Wash., Mr. Michels is a graduate of Purdue University. He holds a BS degree in electrical engineering, He has also studied commerce at Loyola University and business administration at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Mr. Michels' first employment with United States Steel was in 1941.

In 1947 he left to join Laclede-Christy as a chief engineer. He rejoined Steel in 1950.

Mr. Stichels holds membership in the American Iron & Steel Institute, Association of ron & Steel Engineers, the Engineers Society of Western ~ Pennsylvania and the American Institute of Mining and Metal-Turgical Engineers. - The Birmingham News Mon, Nov 08, 1954 ·Page 10


U.S. Steel Names Michels
PITTSBURGH-Norman C. Michels, a former Gary resident, has been appointed vice president facility planning and appropriations, United States Steel Corp., it was announced Saturday by Charles H. Williams, administrative vice president engineering. The appointment becomes effective Jan. 1.

Michels comes to Pittsburgh from Birmingham, where he has been serving U.S. Steel's Tennessee Coal & Iron Division as vice president-engineering for the past five years. In his new position, he succeeds J. D. Rollins, who recently was named president of U.S. Steel's American Bridge Division.

Michels began with United States Steel as special engineer at the Carnegie-Illinois Steel Corp. in Pittsburgh in 1941. The following year, he was transferred to Carnegie-Illinoi3' Gary operations, to work as an expediter. He became assistant project engineer there in 1944.

He returned to Pittsburgh as al planning engineer in 1950 and has worked in this capacity until he was appointed chief engineerproject development, U.S. Steel Corp., in Pittsburgh on Jan. 1, 1952. He went to Birmingham as assistant vice president engineering on Dec. 1, 1954, and was promoted to his present position of vice president-engineering, Tennessee Coal & Iron Division, on Sept. 1, 1955. - The Times, Hammond, Ind. Funeral services for Mrs. Helen Michels, 50, a former Hammond resident, were at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Culver Military Academy Memorial Chapel.

Burial was in Culver Masonic Cemetery.

Mrs. Michels died Saturday in Lutheran Hospital, Cleveland, following a long illness.

Survivors are her husband Norman of Culver; two sons, James of Philadelphia and Jeffrey of Culver and a daughter, Jane Michels of Culver.

CULVER -Funeral services for Mrs. Helen O. Michels, 50, of 1614 E. Shore Dr., Culver, who died at 12:31 a.m. Saturday in the Lutheran Hospital, Cleveland, following an illness of five months; will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Culver Military Academy Memorial Chapel. Rev. George E. Home of Atlanta and Rev. William C.R. Sheridan, rector of St. Thomas Episcopal Church of Plymouth, will officiate.

Burial will be in Culver Masonic Cemetery. Friends may call at the Easterday-Bonine Funeral Home, Culver, after noon today.

Memorial contributions: may be made to the American Cancer Society.

She was born Oct. 21, 1919 in Chicago, and had lived here since 1941.

She was married to Norman C. Michels Aug. 23, 1941 in Chicago.
