Colonel Charles Maull.  

...A familiar name to cadets, particularly between 1958 to 1976, is Colonel Charles Maull.

He was a member of the Class of 1933 and had, as a cadet, achieved a reputation as a hell raiser.

When he became the assistant commandant in 1959, he brought his personal book of "experiences" to the office and had already recorded in his mental memory book most of the excuses a cadet could offer. I found your web site while googling "Lysell Genealogy". My aunt and uncle, Betty and Charles Maull, had a cottage (1242 E. Shore Dr.) on the lake and my family spent several summer vacations visiting them. Charlie and my dad were in the window business together in St. Louis after WWII. Betty and Charlie lived in Kirkwood, Mo. but Betty and their kids summered on the lake in Culver and we'd spend a week or two with them. My uncle Joe (Harry Lysell) lived with Betty and Charlie after his mother died in 1944. Joe later married Mary Alice Baxter.

I can remember several trips to Culver with my folks to visit Betty and Charlie Maull when I was a kid. The last trip in that category was in 1952, the year I turned 16 and my dad was foolish enough to let me use the car while we were there. After Joe and Bebe (Harry Lysell and Mary Alice Baxter) got their cottage, there were several Lysell and Maull family reunions. - Mike Lysell

This Silverplate Box was given to Charlie his sister and brother-in-law. It is engraved on the top "To Charlie From Bebe and Joe - Feb. 5, 1955." The box measures 3 3/4" by 3 1/4" and is 1 1/2" high, and lined on the inside with wood. It is marked on the bottom E.P.C.A., Poole Silver Co., Taunton, Mass., 2000. This was found in Las Vegas, Nevada in an unpaid storage unit with several other personal effects of Charles.

Charles was an outstanding horseman and in 1933 he was captain of the first CMA polo team to win the National Interscholastic Polo Championship.

Charles was Occupation: President of window distributorship in St. Louis, Missouri.

1949 - Oct 12 - Cinco Products Company of St. Louis, Mo. - Mjor Charles Maull Jr. of Culver and John H. (Jack) Lysell of St. Louis are co-owners of the firm. Distributor for the Cinco Division of the F. C. Russell Company makers of aluminum porch enclosures, doors, storm sash, and combination windows

He also taught polo at Culver Military Academy and was publisher/owner of the Culver Citizen for awhile.

30 March 1983 - Culver Citizen:

Col. Charles Maull Jr., 67, a retired instructor and adiminstrator at the Culver Military Academy, passed away on March 29, 1983 at his home in Canoga Park, California.

He was also a former owner and publisher of the Culver Citizen. He graduated from CMA in 1933 and served in World War II.

In 1946 her became a member of the military staff at CMA and in 1949 became the owner and publisher of the Culver CItizen.

He returned to St. Louis in he 1950's to take over a family business, before returning to Culver in 1958, where he became commandant to the military students until his 1978 retirement.

He received a Distinguished Service medal from the government for his service.

Betty's brother Harry "Joe" Lysell m. Mary Alice Baxter dau. of Richard N. & Jane (Fargo) Baxter and the had 4 children.

Charles Maull Jr. was on of eleven alumni inducted into the the Academies Horesmanship Hall of fame 2-4 October 2009. His son Charles and daughter Betty Jean were presented with a 'Steuben glass horse' as part of the induction ceremonies.
