Frances Elizabeth Butler, 98, of Culver, Indiana, died at 3:15 A.M. on Monday, August 15, 2005, at her residence.

Fran was born on May 28, 1907, to William O. and Minnie L. (Shilling) Osborn at Culver, Indiana.

She was married on January 31,.1931, in Boise, Idaho, to Arden N. Butler. He preceded her in death on July 16, 1984.

She is survived by numerous cousins and friends.

Visitation with the family will be Friday, August 19, 2005, from 10:30 - 2:00PM, at the Bonine-Odom Funeral Home in Culver, Indiana. Rev. Karen Altergott and Rev. Dan Berger will officiate services on Friday, August 19, 2005, at 2:00PM at the Bonine-Odom Funeral Home in Culver, Indiana. Interment will be private. Memorial contributions may be given to Wesley United Methodist Church, 511 School Street, Culver, IN 46511.

Arden N. “Polly” BUTLER, 83, of 1680 E. Shore Drive, Culver, died at 9:30 p.m. Monday at his Lake Maxinkuckee home. He had been in failing health several years.

He was born Feb. 25, 1901 in Ponca, Neb., to Omer and Anna ANDERSON BUTLER. He had lived in Culver since 1933. He was married Jan. 31, 1931 in Boise, Idaho to Frances E. OSBORN, who survives. He received a bachelor of music degree from the University of Nebraska; a degree in business administration from the University of Washington, and a bachelor of law degree from Indiana University. He was a member of the American, Indiana and Marshall County Bar Associations, the American Judicature Society, the Indiana S ociety of Chicago, and Delta Upsilon Fraternity. He also was a member of the Marshall County Historical Society, the Elks Lodge, the Plymouth Country Club, the Maxinkuckee Golf Club, the Wesley United Methodist Church, and the alumni associations of Indiana, Washington and Nebraska universities.

Mr. Butler, a professional musician, was well-known in musical circles, having been associated with big name bands including the Glen Miller Orchestra. He was the composer of the musical score and lyrics of the Delta Upsilon Sweetheart Song, “She is Mu Wonderful D.U. Girl.”

Surviving with the wife are a sister, Lois MILAN, Ponca, Nev.; a niece, and two nephews. Private services will be at the Bonine Funeral Home, Culver. Entombment will be in the Culver Masonic Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday. Memorials may be made to the Heart Fund.

Mr. and Mrs Arden Butler

Avid interest in the well being of family and friends plus a wide acquaintanceship and strong interest in the community are well known personal traits of Mrs. Arden N. (Frances E. Osborn) Butler, a native of Marshall County.

Throughout Mrs. Butler's heritage and that of her late husband Arden N. "Polly" Butler (1901-1984), she had close ties and a great appreciation for her close relationships in the Lake Maxinkuckee area.

The daughter of William O. and Minnie (Shilling) Osborn, she was born in 1907 in Culver, where she spent her girlhood days. She met her future husband, Arden Butler, a well known professional musician, when the dance orchestra he was accompanying was fulfilling a summer engagement at a neighboring Lake resort.

The son of mr. and Mrs. O. A. Butler, Ponca, Nebraska, "Polly" Butler received his Bachelor of Music Degree, University of Nebraska, and letter his Business Administration Degree at the University of Washington. In the 1920's he was a member of popular big name dance orchestras; at one time associated with the famed Glen Miller Orchestra, playing at resorts throughout the West with one tour to the Orient.

His sister, Lois Milan resides in Ponca, Nebraska and the late Mrs. Jack (Ardis) Francis resided in Portland, Oregon.

"Polly" was the composer of the music and lyrics of the Delta Upsilon fraternity "Sweetheart Song".

Following their marriage in 1931, in Portland, Oregon, the newlyweds completed a schedule of orchestra bookings before returning to the midwest.

Entering Indiana University Law School, where he received his L.L.B. Degree, the couple resided briefly in Bloomington before turning [returning] to Culver.

He joined the staff of The State Exchange Bank August 1, 1937, serving as Vice-president, Director and Manager, Argos for 37 years before retiring in 1974

As members of Wesley Methodist Church, Lake Maxinkuckee Association, Plymouth Country Club, Maxinkuckee Golf Club and Marshall County Historical Association, the Butlers were active in many groups.

Mr. Butler was a member of county, state, and national bar associations, university alumni groups, Delta Upsilon Fraternity, Indiana Society of Chicago, Elks lodge, and a former treasurer for Argos Community Schools Corporation.

Rewarding association with friends and vacation travels over the years, balanced with responsibilities have blended into a crowded but meaningful pattern for Mrs. Butler. - Bob Rust.
