Civil War Verteran Was with General Sherman

Peter Spangler, aged 90, a Civil war veteran, died Wednesday evening at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Laura Babcock,' Rochester. Death was due to old afe and followed an ilnnes of many weeks duration

The deceased was born near Hessville, Ohio, and was the seventh child of Smauel and Rachel Reed Spangler. He was born on Septmeber 2, 1843.

At the age of 14 he came to Monterey with his parents.

On September 3, 1865, after he had returned from serving in the Civil War, he was married to Harriet Ann Bogardus. To this union were born two daughters, Mrs. Laura Babcoick, Mrs. H. N. BLair and one son, Geore SPangler of Culver>

Wife Preceded Him

Mrs. Spangler preceded him in death on July 27,. 1909. Mr. Spagler had five borthers and sisters, all of whom have passes away except Adam Spangler of Mishawaka. Also surviving him are eight grandchildren, ellven great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren

Mr. Spangler form many years lived in Culver. He was a carpenter and brick mason and helped to construct many of the buildings of the Culver Military Academy.

For his long and faithful service at Decoration Day each year Mr. Spangler was a guest of honor of the academy ath the dress parade on that day as long as his health permitted

Marched to the Sea.

Mrs. Spangler joined the Christain Church at Culver under the services of Rev. Carpenter in 1894.

He enlisted in the Civil War at Plymout and was mustered into service at Indianapolis February 10, 1864, as a private in Comany C, 48th Indiana Volunteer Regiment. He was with General Sherman on his march to the sea.

Mr. Spangler received his honorable discharge from the army at Indianapolis on July 15, 1865.

The Funeral services were held at Saturday after noon from the home of the son, George Spangler, Culver

The Rev. Frank C. Moon of Rochester officiated and burial was in the Poplar Grove Cemetery.

Peter Spangler

Peter Spangler, the seveth child of Smauel and Rachel Reed Spangler, was born near Hssville, Sandusky County Ohio,
September 2, 1842 and passed out of this life through infirmities of age August 17th, 1933, lacking only sixteen days of seing 91 years.

For the past several years Mr. Spangler had made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Laura E Babcock, at Rochester and it was there that loving hands received him, every care had been shown to the degree of faithfulness and sacrifice by the daughter yet to no avail years wore him away and he goes to rest from ohis daughter's home.

At the age of 14 while only a lad Mr. Spangler came with his parents and brothers and sisters to make their hom eint the vicinty of Monterey, Indiana. Pioneering was surley the word for such an early day and the work was labor of the first degree.

In a few short years a call was made though the country and government for volunteerys for war. Mr. Spangler heard, and heeded the call, enlisting at Plymouth, Indiana, and it was at Indianapolis, Indiana where he was mustered into the service, February 10, 1864, as a private in Company C., 49th Regiment Voluneteer Infantry. He was with General Sherman on the march to the sea. Mr. SPangler was honorably discharged at Indianapolis, Indiana, July 15, 1865 and no doubt he could sing those wors with truth and meaning, "No one knows the trouble I've seen, nobody knows but Jesus"

The grandfather of Mr. Spangler, Michael SPangler, was killed in the Battle at Brandywince September 11, 1777, from the revolutionary side, so was can say war was even hereditary in the veins of the elders.

After his discharge and a few short days with his home-folk and friends rehearsing what he had to undergo and harships which he saw in others and the awfulness of war, he decided to take to himself his first love and was untied in marriage to Harriet Ann Bogardus of Maxinkuckee, Indiana, September, 3, 1865, and to this union were nborn two daughters and one son.

Through the days he has lived among us he has see the country blossom from the wilderness to a rose; and no change prior to his time has bee so magnicicent in its growth.

Mr. SPangler used to own and sponsor a hotel or fisherman's paradise and it was here in past and bygone days that many of the celebrities of Indiana and the United States would go for the rest and recuperation and we are told it was here that General Lew Wallace wrote his first chapters of "Ben Hur"

Later in life; yes in 1894, Mr. Spangler heard another call to service and it was under the leadership and preaching of Rev. Carpneter that he gave his heart to God and took membership with the Christain church. Some few years later when the church he ... the denomination was dissolved amd a building was erected by the Methodist faith, Mr. SPangler took membership with them.

Five of Mr. Spangles brothers and sisters have preceeded him to the Better land, hut his greatest loss came when his companion went to her abode July 27, 1909 since which time what lonely hours hace been his, no one can tell.

He leaves to mourn his going, two daughters and one son - Mrs. Laura E. Babcock, Rochester, Indiana; Mrs. H. N. Blair, Decatur, Indiana; George M. Spangler, Culver, Indiana; one borther Adam SPangler Mishawaka, Indiana, 8 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren, besides these especially mentioned he leaves other relatives and a host of friends who will miss him.

Funeral services were held at the residence of his son on Lake Shore Drove at 2 p.m. Saturday, August 19, conducted by the Rev. V. V. Hackley of WInamac.

Burial was in the Poplar Grove cemetery.

Mrs. Peter Spangler, a Pioneer, is called to her Final Rest

Harriet Ann Bogardus, daughter and only child of A. W. and Frances Bogardus, was born Sept. 3, 1840, at Springfield, Ohio, and lived there until 6 years of afe, whe she moved with her parents to New Palestine, Ohio, where she lived untill the ager of 15., She then came to Maxinkuckee, residing with her parents untill married ot Peter Spangler Sept. 3, 1865

They moved to Plymouth and lived there until the death of her mother when she returned to Maxinkuckee to care for her aged father, where she has sice risided

To this union were three children - Laura Ellen Babock of Rochester, Ind.; Frances Jeannetta Blair of North Manchseters, Ind.; George McQuat Soangler who resides at the home place

She united with the Christain church at Maxinkuckee in the winter of 1852, and trsuted in her Heavenly Father until the last.


She passed away on Tuesday morning, July 27, 1909


She was kind and considerate, always trying to please others; a kind and indulgent mother, always ancious for the welfare of her children.

Mrs. H. N. BLAIR, 86, lifelong resident of Culver , died Tuesday noon at her home in that city.

Mrs. Blair was [Frances J. SPANGLER] the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Peter SPANGLER and a sister of Mrs. Laura Ellen BABCOCK of this city, who proceded her in death in 1947.

She is survived by her husband, [Hollis N. BLAIR] at home; two daughters, Mrs. Edward SHADEL of Kewanna and Mrs. Merl GALBREATH of Winamac; three grandchildren, Richard Noland GALBREATH, Mrs. Jeanne NEER, both of Winamac, and Miss Audrey SHADEL of Lakeville, and five great-grandchildren.

Hollice Nolan Blair (called Nola for short) was a member of the Kewanna Light Guards of 1884. He worked for his father and later became an Erie Railroad agent. He married Frances Jeannette Spangler March 18, 1894, from Maxinkuckee, Indiana. Frances and Nola had two daughters, Helen (myself) born April 10, 1895, and Olive, born January 7, 1899. Nola retired in Decautur in 1934 after 34 years with Erie Railroad. They moved to Culver. Mother died May 24, 1955. Papa died at age 96. He drove his car until two years before his death. they are both buried in Kewanna. Olive married Merle Galbreath of Winamac where they lived. They had three children, Blair, Jeanne, and Richard. Blair, born 1921, was killed by a car in 1933 when only 12 years old. Jeanne, born 1927, married Harry Neer and lives in Kingman, Indiana. they had three daughters, Jeannine, Paula, and Peggy. Richard, born 1934, lives in Richmond, Virginia. He is married and has two children. Helen Blair married Ed Shadle and lived in Kewanna. They were married December 31, 1919. Beginning in 1913 Helen taught school, usually fourth grade, for 33 years. She taught in Leiters Ford 1913-16, then stayed home for 10 years to raise their children. Starting in 1926, she taught at Macy, Gilead, Kewanna, Winamac, Lakeville, South Bend, Leiters Ford and Kewanna again, retiring in 1969. From 1967-69 she taught art for two hours daily at Kewanna school. They have two daughters: Audra and Helen Louise. Audra is a graduate nurse of Memorial Hospital, South Bend. She married C. w. Frick of Lakeville. They have two sons: Richard, at home, and Michael, who married Linda Chizum in 1973. Helen Louise is a graduate of Indiana University. She is a voice teacher and has taught music 17 years in LaPaz, New Carlisle, and Michigan City schools. She married M. E. Myers of South Bend. They have one daughter, Melissa. At present they live in LaPorte, Indiana. - Fulton County Folks volume I

Mrs. Laura Ellen BABCOCK, 82, died at 7 a.m. today at the home of her son, Lawrence BABCOCK, R.R. 2, after an illness of seven months.

A pioneer resident of this community, Mrs. Babcock was born Feb. 1, 1865, in Marshall county and lived her entire life in Fulton and Marshall counties. She was the daughter of Peter and Harriet SPANGLER. She was the widow of Dr. I. L. BABCOCK. A past chief of the Pythian Sisters lodge here, Mrs. Babcock was a member of the Baptist church and the W.B.A.

Survivors, besides the son, include two daughters, Mrs. H. P. CALLOWAY, Rochester, and Mrs. Harry FOGLESONG, Kalamazoo, Mich.; two other sons, Ronald Leroy BABCOCK, Culver , and Robert Peter BABCOCK, Rochester; a sister, Mrs. Nola BLAIR, Culver ; ten grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Her husband, two daughters, a brother, a granddaughter and grandson preceded her in death.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in the Baptist church with the Rev. Harry J. BAILEY officiating. Burial will be in the IOOF cemetery.

The body will remain at the Foster funeral home until 1 p.m. Friday when it will be taken to the church where it will lie in state until the hour of services. - Tuesday, July 29, 1947 Rochester Sentine married in 1882 Dr. I. L. ( Isaac L. ) Babcock of the Richland Center area of Fulton county. Birth: Oct. 5, 1856 Death: Aug. 18, 1912 He opened his medical practice in Maxinkuckee and later moved to Rochester. At 8:25 o'clock Sunday morning occurred the death of Dr. I. L. BABCOCK, who has been confined to his bed at Woodlawn for the past six weeks suffering from chronic cystitis. For the past two years Dr. Babcock has been a victim of this dreadf ul affliction and on several occasions his condition grew quite serious. However, at each time he recovered until seven weeks ago he was taken ill. A week later he was removed to Woodlawn, where he was accorded every attention and aid of the medical world. At times his condition changed for the better, but gradually his vitality gave way until the time of his death.

I. L. Babcock was born on a farm four miles south of Rochester on October 5, 1856, where he lived with his parents until he had attained young manhood. He then left the farm to attend the Bennett Medical School of Chicago from which he graduated in 1880. After practicing medicine for one year he was united in marriage with Miss Laura Ellen SPANGLER and they took up their home at Lake Maxinkuckee, where he continued in the practice of medicine for eleven years. Then they moved to Rochester, but after a short stay here removed to Maxinkuckee, where they again remained located for five years. Again, tiring of that place they left there and went to Germany, where they stayed two years and returned to Rochester to take up their home, which they have held ever since. To this union was born eight children, six of whom survive with the wife and mother. The children are Ronald Leroy BABCOCK, Germany; Mrs. Virgil KNAPP, Rochester; Mrs. H. D. THORNBURG, Alice [BABCOCK], Robert [BABCOCK] and Lawrence [BABCOCK], at home. Those dead are Mrs. Harry BRUGH and an infant. Besides his wife and children he also leaves three sisters, Mrs. Jane ANDREWS, Mrs. Frank BUNN, Richland township, Mrs. A. K. STURGEON, Greenville, Michigan, and four brothers, J. J. BABCOCK, Warsaw; J. C. BABCOCK, Akron; Andrew E. BABCOCK, Richland Center; Ira C. BABCOCK, Rochester.

He was a member of the Rochester Baptist church for the past number of years and is affiliated with the Odd Fellows, Knights of Pythias, Maccabees, Pythian Sisters and Rebekahs of Rochester and the Odd Fellows of Culver . During his many years of residence in this city he gained a wide practice and by his courteous manner won many friends, who now join the sorrowing family. Nearly two years ago Dr. Babcock was selected by the voters of the city of Rochester to represent the First ward and he served in that capacity until his illness with an integrity that showed he had the interest of his city first in his heart. His death has caused a vacancy in the council that will be hard to fill.
The funeral will be held at the residence on West Fifth street at 1 o'clock Wednesday afternoon, Rev. G. C. CHANDLER of the Baptist church to have charge of the services. Burial will be made in the Poplar Grove cemetery, north of Maxinkuckee - Monday, August 19, 1912 The Rochester Sentinel

1 Ronald Leroy 'Budge' Babock, (The eldest of their nine children ) Ronald L. BABCOCK, 72, R.R. 1, Culver , died at 4:20 a.m. today in the Miller nursing home here, where he had been a patient for the last three weeks. He had been ill for six weeks.

A past Noble Grand of the Maxinkuckee I.O.O.F. Lodge No. 373, Mr. Babcock had spent his entire life in the Lake Maxinkuckee vicinity.

He was born in Union township, Marshall county, on July 23, 1885, the son of Isaac L. and Laura Ellen (SPANKLER) BABCOCK. [On May 21, 1904], he was married to Ida MILLISER, who died in 1946.

His second marriage was in August, 1950, to Cora HAHN, who survives.

Caretaker of the Marmon estate on the East Shore road at Culver , Mr. Babcock was a member of the Maxinkuckee Methodist church.

Surviving besides the widow are a son, George [BABCOCK], R.R. 1, Culver ; a granddaughter, Mrs. Hattie HENDERSON COUNTS, Nappanee; three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Robert P. and Lawrence [BABCOCK], Rochester; two sisters, Mrs. Ielda CALLOWAY, Rochester, and Mrs. Alice FOGELSONG, Kalamazoo, Mich. A daughter preceded him in death.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Grossman funeral home at Argos with the Rev. Kendall SANDS officiating. Burial will be in the Maxinkuckee I.O.O.F. cemetery where the lodge will conduct graveside rites. Friends may call at the funeral home after 7 p.m. today. - Friday, March 21, 1958, Rochester Sentinel married Ida Milliser and was a lifetime resident of Culver . Mrs. Ronald R. [Ida] BABCOCK, 64, of East Shore Road, Culver , died in Woodlawn hospital here at 6:25 a.m. Friday. She had been in ill health for several years. Mrs. Babcock had many friends throughout both Marshall and Fulton counties.

Ida [MILLISER], daughter of George and Cynthia MILLISER, was born at Leiters Ford, July 12, 1884 and had resided in the vicinity of Culver all of her life. She was married to Ronald R. BABCOCK on May 21, 1904 at what is now Loyal, Ind. Mrs. Babcock was a member of the Maxinkuckee church.

Funeral services will be in charge of the Rev. Albert VERMILLION of Jamestown and the pastor of Maxinkuckee church, will be held Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock at the church. Burial will be in the Poplar Grove cemetery northeast of Maxinkuckee. The body will lie in state at the Grossman funeral home, Argos, until 1:30 p.m. Sunday and then it will be removed to the Maxinkuckee church Friday, July 30, 1948 Rochester Sentinel

Funeral services will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the Zimmerman Brothers funeral home here for Robert Peter "Pete" BABCOCK, 67, 816 Fulton avenue, who died Saturday at 1:25 p.m. in Woodlawn hospital.

The Rev. James GUTHRIE of the Westminster Presbyterian church in Marion, will officiate at the rites and burial will be in the I.O.O.F. cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home.

Mr. Babcock had been in failing health since November, 1960, and was seriously ill six weeks. He had been a hospital patient six days. Death was due to a heart condition and emphysema of lungs.

A resident of this community his entire life, Mr. Babcock was born in Rochester on Oct. 6, 1894, the son of Dr. Isaac L. and Laura Ellen SPANGLER BABCOCK. He was married in Rochester on Feb. 14, 1915, to Ora Lorraine AUSTIN, who survives.

For 25 years, Mr. Babcock operated a meat market at 426 Main street and in later years worked as a meat cutter at Babcock's Locker Plant at Lake Maniou and at Berkway Supermarket. He was employed at the Kingsbury Ordnance Plant from 1942-46. An outstanding baseball pitcher in his youth, he played for the top independent teams of this area. He was a member of the First Baptist church.

Besides the wife, are one son, Dr. Robert Austin BABCOCK, Marion; three grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Harry (Alice) FOGLESONG, Kalamazoo, Mich., and Mrs. Milo (Ielda) SMITH, Dixon, Wyo.; and one brother, Lawrence "Doc" BABCOCK, Rochester. Mrs. Ora Lorraine BABCOCK, 78, former resident of 716 Fulton street, died Saturday evening at the Canterbury Manor nursing home where she had been a patient since July, 1972.

Born Feb. 13, 1896, at Wheatfield, Ind., she was the daughter of Joseph and Daisy AUSTIN.

Her marriage was on Feb. 14, 1915, to Robert P. BABCOCK. He preceded in death March 3, 1962.

Mrs. Babcock served for many yers as a practical nurse at the old Rochester nursing home.

Surviving are one son, Dr. Robert A. BABCOCK and one grandson, Robert A. BABCOCK Jr., both of Marion; two granddaughters, Mrs. Robert Mark (Leeann) BUCHOLTZ, of St. Louis, and Mrs. Keith (Sally) MCLAUGHLIN, Monticello.

Final rites will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in the Zimmerman Brothers funeral home, where friends may call after 5 p.m. today.

Lawrence "Doc" BABCOCK, 70, Lake Manitou, died at 11:45 p.m. Tuesday in Woodlawn hospital where he had been a patient for two weeks.

He was owner and operator of Babcock Sales and Service on the north side of Lake Manitou, where he sold and services boats and motors.

Born Oct. 5, 1902 at Germany Station to Dr. Isaac L. and Laura Ellen SPANGLER BABCOCK, he was a lifetime resident of this community.

For many years he was a grocer and had a meat market with his late brother Pete [BABCOCK] on Main street. He also was very active in local lodges.

He was married Dec. 31, 1922 in Mexico, Ind., to Theressa M. HENDRICKS, who died Feb. 16, 1965.

Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Lawrence (Bonita Jean) STEWART, Tampa, Fla.; two sons, William [BABCOCK], Rochester, and Dr. F. W. BABCOCK, Culver; fifteen grandchildren; four great-grandchildren, and a sister, Mrs. Milo (Ielda) SMITH, Modesto, Cal.

Two brothers and four sisters preceded in death.

Last rites will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Zimmerman Brothers funeral home with the Rev. Earl SHARP officiating.

Burial will be in the I.O.O.F. cemetery here. BABCOCK, 60, R.R. 2, Rochester, died Tuesday morning in General hospital, Tampa, Fla., following surgery. She had been ill several weeks.

Mrs. Babcock lived on Barrett road on the north shore of Lake Manitou with her husband Lawrence I. BABCOCK, to whom she was married in Mexico, Ind., Dec. 17, 1921.

She had resided in Rochester and vicinity almost all her life.

Born July 3, 1904 near Bruce Lake, she was the daughter of William and Albina BLEDSOE HENRICKS.

She was a member of the Church of the Brethren at Mexico.

Surviving with the husband are a daughter, Mrs. Fred (Bonnie) HOWARD, Tampa; two sons, William [BABCOCK], Rochester, and Dr. F. L. BABCOCK, Culver; four grandchildren; the father, of Mexico, Ind.; two sisters, Mrs. Mildred BRECHBIEL, Bunker Hill, and Mrs. Iris STOCKDALE, Mexico, and nieces and nephews.

Last rites will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Zimmerman Brothers funeral home with the Rev. Donald RITCHEY officiating.

Burial will be in the Rochester I.O.O.F. cemetery.

William L. Babcock, 75, Winamac, Indiana, previously of Rochester, passed away at 1:35 P.M. on Saturday, December 6, 2014 at Pulaski Health Care Center, Winamac, Indiana.

He was born on July 9, 1939 in Rochester, Indiana, the son of Lawrence “Doc” and Theressa (Hendricks) Babcock. He served in the Indiana National Guard.

William was the owner and operator of Babcock Sales and Service on the north side of Lake Manitou. He was a certified Evenrude Outboard Motor Mechanic.

William was a member of the VFW, and the Rochester Moose Lodge. He enjoyed fishing and hunting, clay pigeon shooting, and was an avid snowmobiler.

Survivors include his children, Matthew and wife Brenda Babcock, Freeport, Florida, Gary a nd wife Deb Babcock, Indianapolis, Indiana, brother Dr. Francis and wife Mary Babcock, Green Valley, Arizona, and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Bonnie Howard and his parents.

4 Anna Clyde BABCOCK Birth: Oct. 30, 1883 Death: Feb. 13, 1904
The sad news was received here late this afternoon that Mrs. Harry [O.] [Anna Clyde BABCOCK] BRUGH, of near Germany, died Friday evening. She was the mother of a three or four days old baby and death resulted from child birth.

Mrs. Brugh was formerly Miss Clyde Babcock, the oldest daughter of Coroner and Mrs. I. E. BABCOCK, of near Leiters Ford. She has a host of friends here where she attended the R.N.U. several years ago, who will be heartbroken to hear of the untimely end of one whose future was so bright. Mrs. Brugh was always a bright light in the eyes of her acquaintances and was held in the highest esteem by all who knew her. Her death has also cast a gloom over the community where she lived, and the sorrowing husband and relatives have all the consolation that the sympathizing neighbors can tender them. Word has been received of the death in Modesto, Cal., Nov. 21, of Mrs. Ielda Lenore SMITH, 85, Modesto, following a brief illness.

Born Aug. 18, 1888 in Maxinkuckee, Ind., she was the daughter of Dr. Isaac L. and Laura E. SPANGLER BABCOCK.

Her first marriage was Aug. 18, 1907 in Rochester to H. D. THORNBURG; her second marriage was May 3,1925 in St. Joseph, Mich., to Howard P. CALLAWAY; her third marriage was Aug. 7, 1958 in Cheyenne, Wyo., to Milo B. SMITH. All three preceded in death.

She was a member of the First Baptist church, the WABA and the Mothers of World War II, all of Rochester.

Surviving are a daughter, Miss Kathryn THORNBURG, Modesto; three grandchildren, Leland THORNBURG, Olympia, Wash.; Harvey THORNBURG, Greeley, Colo., and Mrs. Lora Jane RUTH, Yreka, Cal.; six great-grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Mrs. H. B. THORNBURG, Seattle, Wash.; two step-daughters, Mrs. Homer (Grace) REESTER, Brookings, Ore., and Mrs. Lewis (Bernice) YOST, Craig, Colo., and two step-sons, Robert CALLAWAY, Mishawaka, ad Victor SMITH, Grand Junction, Colo.

A son, Harold B. THORNBURG, three sisters, and four brothers preceded in death.

A memorial service will be conducted by the Rev. Donald MAUGHAN at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Zimmerman Brothers funeral home. Burial will be in the Rochester I.O.O.F. cemetery - Rochester Sentinel Saturday, December 1, 1973

6 Marie Jeanette BABCOCK
Marie Jennette BABCOCK, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. L. L. BABCOCK, born at Rochester, Ind., Sept. 26, 1891, died at the St. Elizabeth hospital, Danville, Illinois, Feb. 16, 1914, aged 22 years, 4 months, 21 days, and December 17, 1911, at Rochester, she was married to Virgil KNAPP.

In early life she was converted and united with the 1st Baptist church of Rochester and she remained a faithful member until her death, being regular in her attendance and work in the Sunday school and church.

Last December, she with her husband and little son, moved to Danville, Ill.

She was taken seriously ill there and breathed her last in the hospital.

Those surviving her are: husband, Virgil KNAPP, and little son, Donald [KNAPP], her mother, three brothers and two sisters and a large number of relatives and friends. Her father, one brother and one sister preceded her to the other world.

She was a member o the Evergreen Rebekah lodge and also of the Isabelle temple, Pythian Sisters.

It seems scarcely credible that this young, vigorous life should have passed away from us so quickly. Only a few weeks ago I bade her good bye, as she with her husband and baby went to their new home near Danville, Ill. She looked so beautiful and appeared to be so vigorous. We had reason to expect that many years of service were before her. But that young, hopeful, vigorous capable life has finished it course and the new life of Heaven has opened up before her forever.

I need not say that Marie was a general favorite. In her common schools, in her high school life, in her lodge relations and in her ralations as a church member, she was much beloved. As you know she had considerable ability as a reader and reciter and was in much demand for entertainments. But the sweet, thrilling voice is hushed, the gentle, personality is calm and still in death, she was awakened to a larger, fuller life in the far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory.

She has departed to be with Christ, which is far better. May God comfort her bereaved husband and broken hearted mother and relatives and may He care for her motherless babe. - - - Rev. G. C. CHANDLER Rochester Sentinel Monday, February 23, 1914

7 Alice Clyola BABCOCK
Mrs. Alice FOGLESONG, 68, Kalamazoo, Mich., died at 8 p.m. Friday in the Borgess hospital in Kalamazoo.

She was admitted to the hospital Nov. 15. She had been ill since October, 1967 when she broke her hip.

In the 1920's she and her husband had operated a restaurant where the Evergreen cafe is now located.

Born May 9, 1900, in Fulton county, she was the daughter of Isaac Lawrence and Laura Ella SPANGLER BABCOCK.

Her marriage was Sept. 22, 1919, in Rochester, to Harry F. FOGLESONG. He died in August, 1952.

A resident of Kalamazoo since 1936, she was a member of the United Methodist church at Winamac and the Women's Benefit association in Rochester.

Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Ted (Mary Lee) MOFFIT, Battle Creek, Mich.; a son, Jerry R. FOGLESONG, West Lafayette; six grandchildren; one brother, Lawrence "Doc" BABCOCK, Rochester; one sister, Mrs. Milo (Elda CALLAWAY) SMITH, Dixon, Wyo. A brother, Robert BABCOCK preceded in death.

Final rites will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Zimmerman Brothers funeral home. The Rev. Laurence SMITH will officiate.

Mrs. Howard CALLOWAY, route 1, this city early today received word of the death of her brother-in-law, Harry FOGLESONG, 53, which occurred at 2 a.m. today in Detroit.

Death was attributed to a heart attack. However, Mr. Foglesong had been ill for he past several months from a heart ailment.

For the past few years Mr. Foglesong managed a hotel in Detroit. He moved there from Owosso, Mich., following a fire which destroyed a hotel which he managed in that city.

The former Rochester citizen upon leaving here about 25 years ago owned and operated the Frain Hotel of Winamac. He and his father operated a cafe in this city for several years.

Harry, son of Henry and Marcia (WHITTENBERGER) FOGLESONG was born in Plymouth, Ind., in 1899.

He was a graduate of the Rochester High School and active in the sports activities of RHS throughout his school years.

He was married to Alice BABCOCK, of this city.

Mr. Foglesong was the last member of the family. His parents, two brothers, Hugh and Fred [FOGLESONG] and a sister, Mrs. Marcia (Earl) KARN, all preceded in death.

Survivors are his wife, of Detroit; a son, a daughter and three grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Foster Funeral Home, this city.

Burial will be in the Rochester I.O.O.F. cemetery - Rochester News-Sentinel Tuesday, August 12, 1952
