    Military records say Louis was born 1888. He once told his son that he lied about his age to get in the Army - thus 21 Nov 1888 as appears on som of the records.

    Capt Stone Retrires From Army Service

    Master Sergeant Louis Stone who retired from active service from the United States Army on March 21, was honored with a garrison review of the Culver Military Academy cadet corps Sunday noon.

    Upon hid retirement Master Sergeant Stone was advanced on the retired list of the Army with the rank of captain, the rank which he held during the World War.

    Captain Stone has been on duty at the Culver Military Academy as an ROTC instructor since October 1919, following his return from duty in France and Germany.

    He enlisted in the 6th Calvary at Fort Des Moines, Ia. on February 5, 1909, and has been active since that time, serving his country, in the Philipiine Islands, and overseas in France and Germany.

    An excerpt from the General Order issued by Captain W. J. Eyerly, U. S. Army, Professor of Military Science and Tatics at Culver, announcing Captain Stone's retirement, reads as follows:
      Master Sergeant Stone's record of over 30 years' service has been loyal and faithful. His work as an instructor of Cavalry R.O.T.C. classes, with the various athletic squads including fencing and polo, and as chief clerk of the R.O.T.C. office has been competent and thorough, which has won him the confidence and admiration of the student body as well as the officers and men with whom he has worked. As a result of his excellent work and long period of service at the Academy his departure will be felt by many departments.


    Captain Stone has a host of friends among the Academy personnel, cadets, and alumni, and he caries with tim to his well-earned retirement the respect and best wishes of the command - April 5 1939 Culver Citizen


Major Stone, Retired Army Officer, Dies
    Major Louis J. Stone, age 76, of 1766 East Shroe Dr., Culver died at 7:45 a.,. on Friday, May 18 at the vertaran's Administration Hospital at Fort Wayne. He had been ill for seven weeks.

    Major Stone was a retired Army officer with thirty-seven years service and a veeran of World War I. He served with the Calvary in Fance and became associated with Culver Military Academy in 1919 where he was head of the Calvary for many years. He retired from the Academy in 1957.

    He was born Novemebr 21, 1892 at Worster, Mas.. to JOseph and Sarah Stone.

    He was married to Mary Sarber on October 4, 1920 at Chesterton, Ind.

    He was a member of the Wesley United Church of Christ.

    Surviving with his wife are two sons Joseph Stone, Elgin, Ill. and Wallace Stone, Chesterfield, Ind.; one brother Phillip Stone No. Miami Beach, Fla.; one sister Mrs. Rose Bedrick, Worster, Mass and four grandchildren.

    Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Monday at the Culver Military Academy Chapel Memorial, with Rev. John Krieger, pastor of Culver Grace United Church of Christ, officiating.

    Burial was in the Oak Hill Cemetery, Plymouth.

    The Easterday-Bonine Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

      He was born Dec. 24, 1931, in South Bend, Ind., the son of Lewis Joseph and Mary Martha (Sarber) Stone. He married Earlene "Pete" Robinson on Dec. 27, 1955, in Hillsboro, Wis.

      Joe grew up in Argos and Culver, Ind. He graduated from Culver Military Academy and Duke University.

      Joe served in the Air Force with the 27th Air Refueling Squadron-27th Strategic Flight Wing as pilot/navigator. After spending time in the active reserves, he was employed with CR Industries in market research and sales IPC and Frendenberg NOK. Joe returned to CR Industries where he retired after many years of service.

      Joe was a life-time class agent at Culver and active on various committees, including the Legion Board of Directors. He loved Culver and all his life long friends and friendships throughout his life. His great sense of humor and love for his wife, family, friendships and life had made him very special.

      Joe is survived by his wife, Earlene "Pete" Stone; two children, Michael L. (Clara) Stone of Arlington Heights and Mary Jo (Jack) Olsavsky of Atascocita, Texas; five grandchildren, Marc and Marie Stone, Amanda Hegal and John and Christine Olsavsky; one great-granddaughter, Julie Stone; his nieces and nephews, Joan (John) Burch, Patricia (Don) Wilkie and Matt Kaczmarek; and his great nieces and great nephews, Jacob and Jessica Burch, Nicole, Jordan and Kiel Wilkie.

      His father, Maj. Lew Stone, a member of the horsemanship staff from 1919-1957, and a brother, Wallace Stone '54, preceded him in death.

      His funeral service will begin at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 5, at Slater-Butala Funeral Home in Genoa, with the Rev. James Freund officiating. Burial will be at Genoa Cemetery, with military rites. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. Monday until the service time at the funeral home.
