1952 - February 6 – Veteran Nickle Plate Agent Buys Service Station

    H. D. Winkler, veteran Nickle Plate agent at Hibbard, has resigned his position with the Railroad company and has purchased the Shell Service Station here from Paul Begin.

    The transfer of ownershipt was effected on February 1.

    Mr. Winkler, who has been a member of the Nickel Plate staff for 13 years, has had broad experinece in auto mechanics. He serves as an instructor in the auto mechanics cours at the Acasemy

    He is a past master of the Henry H. Culver Masonic Lodge

    Mr. Begin had operated the service station for the past four month having purchased the business from R. L. Listenberger.

    A well known ahd hiighly respected Culver man, Harry D. WInkler, wose late father made a name for himself as a law ennforcement and adimisitrative officer, will seek the Republican nominaion for sheriff of Marshall County at the May 6 primary

    For the past eight years popular and efficient Harvey Phillips has held this important post fo the Democrats in almost solidly Republican Marshall County Sheriff Phillips is not eligible to run again. It is generally believed Winkler, the first Culverite to seek a major Marshall County job in several years, has the appeal and qualifications to win the coveted post for the G. O. P.

    Father Once Was Sheriff

    Harry WInkler's father, the late J. Logan Winkler, amde a fine name for himself as sheriff of Johnson count Illinois, having had several harrowing encounters with members of the widley publicized Berger-Shelton prohibition ere gang which terrorized much of Southern Illinois. Previousl the CUlver candidate's father served as a police officer in the city of Mattoon, Ill.

    HarryWInkler therefore is fully aware that a sheriff's job is a lot more demanding than TV and the movies would have one believe. He iswilling to accelt the reasponsiblility of the tough Assignmentinvolved.

    For vie years Mr. Winkler owned and operatedWinkler's SHell service station on Lake.... Clerk-treasure of the Town of Culver, a post to which he was elected in 1955 by a big majority.

    Railroad Investigator

    Long associated with railroads, the local candidate for sheriff has served as an agent, accountant, andtelegraphand teletype operator for the Illinois Central, Nickel Palte, and Pennsulvania Railroads. For thre years he acted as special railroad investigator.Mr.WInkler is a former officer of the Depatment of Conservation for the State of Illlinois, serving successfully for fout years.

    Winkler is also a member of the Scottish Rite ((32nd degree) of the South Bend Valley as well as tye ROyal Arch Masons,Plumout Chapter No. 49 and the Plymouth Chapter No. 49 and the Plymouth Commadery (KNights Templar) both of the York Rite.

    Mr. Winkler is a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows,Maxinkuckee Order of Odd Fellows Maxinkuckee Lodge No. 373; Rochester Encampment No. 24; the Culver Lions Club; and the Culver-Union Township Chamber of Commerce

    Mr. andMrs.Winkler, parents of two aughters, Mrs. P.M. Pedersen of Cleveland, Ohio and Mrs. B. E. Byrman of Hintington, Ind. Have been residents of Culver for 19 years and are mebers of the

Harry D. Winkler, owner and operator of the new buisness establishment, is well known throughout the community having operated the Shell Service Station on Lake Shore drive i in Culver for a number of years. He also served a four year term as town clerk-treasurer.

"Wink" as he is popularly known is well qualified in this field, having been an instructor of auto mechanics for eight seasons at the Culver Summer Schools.
