William H. Snider  

Major W. H. Snider Now living retired in Logansport, after a long and successful career as a merchant of this city, Major Snider is a native of Indiana. He was living in Ohio when the War of the Rebellion broke out, and was one of the honored and valiant soldiers from that state during the struggle, but for more than forty-five years has been identified with Cass county, Indiana.

William H. Snider, was born at Centreville, in Wyne county, Indiana, and is of good old American Stock. His parents were Frederick V. and Mary (Smith) Snider, his father a native of Virginia and the mother of Ohio. The father was a cadinet maker by trade and died in centreville. Besides Major Snider there was one sone and two daughters in the family.

In Wayne county. Major Snider spent his boyhood and completed his education in the Whitrwater seminary at Centreville. He was a boy when the war came on, and in July, 1862, enlisted in the Ninety-fourth Regiment of Ohio Volunteers. He was promoted to lieutenant of Company F, and in February, 1863, became captain. In Janaury, 1865, he was made major of his regiment. His military record includes active participation in campaigns and battles from the early months of the war until its close, and the more important are mentioned as follows: Battle of perryville, Kentucky; Stone River and Murfeesboro, Tennessee; the campaign after Chicamauga, leading up th the seige of Atlanta, in which he fought at Resaca and Peachtree, in Georgia; he was with Genral Sherman on his march from Atlanta to the sea, participating in all the engagements of that campaign; then was in the Sherman campaign from Savannah north to the Carolinas, to Richmond, Virginia. He was mustered out with his regiment at Washington, D.C. after the wad had closed.

With this rank and experience as a soldier Major Snider returned home, and in May, 1867, arrived in Cass county, having been a resident of Logansport ever since. From 1867 until 1910 he was engaged in the crockery business at Logansport. Major Snider in November 1871 married Miss Mary Jerolaman, a daughter of George M. and Mary Jerolaman. Major Snider is a member of the Presbyterian church, and has taken an active part in social and civic affairs. He is a Knight Templar Mason, is a member of the Loyoal Legion military organization, comprising the officers of the late war; the Tuesday Night Club and the Deutcsher Verein.

William H. Snider, one of the oldest and most prominent of Logansport's pioneer businessmen,for a long time and retired, and Sunday morning at 2:45 the residents 140 Eel River Avenue, aged eigity-six years, death being due to the natural ailments incident to age. Mr. Snider had been in poor health for at least eight years, during which time only occasionally would he venture from his home.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mary Jerolaman Snider. The funeral will be held Tuesday afternoon at 3 o'clock, from The residence, conducted by Rev. Walter Johnston of Charleaton, Ill., a former pastor of Broadway Presbyterian church, under the auspices of Logansport Post, No. 14 Grand Army Republic.



The remains will be placed in the Jerolaman vault in Mt. Hope cemetery.

William H. Snider was the son of Frederick and Mary (Smith) Snider, and was born in Wayne county, Indiana, March 2 1837.

At the outbreak of the war for the preservation of the Union, he enlisted as a volunteer in the three months service in the Eleventh Ohio Infantry, and at the expiration of that period Joined Company F. Ninety-fourth Ohio Regiment, and served three years, first as lieutenant and latter being promoted to captain, the last year of his service being commissioned major of his regiment. In which office he was mustered out of the service.

He came to Logansport in 1866 and engaged in the queensware business with James F. Morris, 1871 purchasing his partner's interest and later admitting the late John Alber to the firm, under the firm name of Snider & Alber, finally retiring from business.

He was a member of Orient lodge. No 272, F. £ A. M., Logan Chapter No 2, R. A, M., Logansport Council, No. 11, H & S. M., and St John Commandery, No. 24, Knights Templar. He was also a member of Logansport Post, No. 14. G. A. R.

Mr. Snider was united In marriage In Logansport, October 16, 1871, to Miss Mary Jerolaman, daughter of the late Dr, George M. Jerolaman, who survives. - Pharos Tribune - Monday 29 Oct 1923

Funeral Services For Mrs. W. H. Snider Today

Funeral services were held today in the Episcopal church at Logansport for Mrs. W. H. Snider, pioneer East Side cottager and aunt of Mrs. R. H. Mowbray.

Father Roland , of Plymoth, officiated and interment was in the Mt. Hoper cemetery at Logansport

Mrs. Snider passed away Monday afternoon at the E. O. Irwin home, where shad been residing until the Mowbrays could get settled in their new North Carolina Home. She had been ill only a week

On January 24th Mrs. Snider celedrated her 92nd birthday, with Col. and Mrs. Mowbray joining in the observance. They had just returned to their home when word of Mrs. Snider's death was received.

Mrs. Snider started coming to Lake Maxinkuckee almost 60 years ago.
