He moved to his late home near Rutland in 1866

Oct 27 1861 he was united in marraige to Miss Sarah Hawk. To this union two sons and five daughters were born. Emma preceded the father to the spirit world by four hours and Lucy J. died in infancy.

The wife, five children, one brother survive him.

Fifteen Years ago - Mrs. Solomon Cavender (Nee Hartman died Dec. 11, aged 47 years. Lewis Hartman, father of Mrs. Cavender, died near Rutland on the same day.

Emma Estella Hartman, eldest daughter of Lewis and Sarah Hartman, was born near Tiffin, Ohio January 16, 1883 died Dec 11, 1904.

She was married to Solomon Cavender, Sept. 15, 1881.

To them four sons and three daughters were born one daughter dying in infancy. She was untied with the Methodist church soon after he marriage and has ever been a consistent member.

SOlomon Cavender was bonr in Starke county Ohio March 11, 1849 and died October 1 1911 in his 63d year.

It the beginning of the civil war, when byt a lad of 15 years, he enlisted and remained in the service until the close of the war.

A few years later he came to Indiana

He was married to Emma E Hartman of Rutland Sept 25, 1881.

To them were born six children - Claude C. of Plymouth, Henry W of Mishawaka, Arthur R of Chicago, Russell of Milroy, Esther M and Mary L of Knightstown.

Soon after his marrage he united with the M. E. church at Popular Grove and was an efficient worker in every department of the church, giving many years of excellent service.

The funeral was held a Poplar Grove on Wednesday at 2 o'clock, the service being conducted by Re.v Yager, pastor of the U.B. church in Plymouthy.

Mrs. Susan Borror, aged 66, of 1017 East Indiana avenue died in her home At 2:.50 p.m. Sunday after three weeks illness.

She leaves a son, Ralph Borror, of South Bend; a son-in-law, Dale T. Niven of South Bend; three grandchildren, and two brothers , William and Frank Hartman, Rutland, Ind.

Friends may call at the residence this afternoon and tonight and until funeral services at 4 p. m. Tuesday in Ridgedale Presbyterian church.

Prayer services will he held in the residence at 3:30 p. m. Tuesday, Rev. Jerome E. Webber, pastor of Ridgedale church, will officiate.

Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

Mrs. Borror was born in Marshall county, Indiana, March 12, 1874, and came here 28 years ago from Harris, Ind. She was married in South Bend in 1895 to Franklin Borror, who died there 20 years ago.”

Frank C. Borror, 1017 East Indiana avenue, died Friday following an illness of a year as a result of a stroke of apoplexy.

He was born in Columbus, O. March 23, 1864, and was 53 years old at the time of his death.

He had been a resident of South Bend for the past 8 years, having come here from Plymouth, Ind. Until the time of his last illness he was employed as an inspector in a local veneer factory.

He is survived by is wife, Susan A. Borror; two children, Ralph Borror and Mrs. Dale Niven of this city; two brothers, William and Louis Borror; and two sisters, Mrs. H. O’Connor and Mrs. S. Sluss of South Bend.

The funeral will be held at the residence Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock, Rev, Edwin Meister, officiating.

Burial will be made in the Highland Cemetery

She was married in 1913 in St. Joseph, MI to Dale Niven, who survives.

She leaves her mother, Mrs. Susan Borror of this city, 2 daughters, Eleanor and Louise, and a brother, Ralph Borror of South Bend.

Resident dies of injuries. Police investigate report of fight at hotel.

Dale Nivens, 75, of 223 1/2 N. Michigan St., died at 12:05 p.m. Tuesday in Memorial Hospital where he had been a patient since Nov. 17.

Nivens was taken to the hospital from his room at the State Hotel after he suffered a broken leg and pelvis, reportedly in a fight with another hotel resident that followed an argument there, police learned from a hotel employee. The employee, Charles Andrews, 628 W. LaSalle Ave., told police investigating the incident Nov. 20 that Nivens and the other resident struggled on the floor. Nivens then complained of leg pains, Andrews said, and a private ambulance was called. Police had no record of the incident Nov. 17.

Investigation was begun Nov. 20 after a relative of Nivens, his nephew, Howard E. Nivens, of 1253 Woodward Ave., requested information, according to police records. Detectives are still investigating the case, according to police and an autopsy has been scheduled, the hospital said later Tuesday.

Niven, a retired Studebaker Corp. employee was born on Sept. 9, 1893 in South Bend.

In October, 1913, he married Hazel G. Borror, who died in 1935. Surviving are two sons, Michael and Patirck, both of South Bend: two daughters, Mrs. Louise McKee of Orland, Ind., and Mrs. Emily Eckenbager of South Bend; three grandchildren; a brother, Howard, of South Bend; and two sisters, Mrs. Eleanor Mullaney of Englewood, Fla., and Mrs. Edna Golba. of Mishawaka.

Friends may call after 4 p.m. Thursday at the Orvis Funeral Home, where services will be held at I p.m. Friday with Rev. C. Franklin Bruce, pastor of Ridgedale Presbyterian Church, officiating. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery

Louise was born in South Bend on Feb. 12, 1917, and lived here until 1968 when she moved to Orland, Ind., where she lived until 1993 when she moved back to South Bend.

As Laura Louise Nivens she married Glenn R. McKee in South Bend on July 23, 1938. He died in 1990.

She was also preceded in death by her parents, Dale T. and Hazel Borror Nivens; and by a sister, Eleanor Nivens. Mrs. McKee is survived by a daughter, Susan A. Bennett of South Bend; two sons, Timothy C. (Linda) McKee of Chesapeake, Va., and Daniel R. McKee of Nashville, Ind.; three grandchildren, Laura Sue Bennett of South Bend, Robert D. (Niki) Bennett of South Bend and Brandon McKee of Chesapeake; and by two great-grandchildren, Elizabeth M. Bennett and Brian J. Bennett.

Louise was a member and very active in Ridgedale Presbyterian Church in South Bend while she lived here, and with the Orland Congregational Church of Orland. She was also a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the American Legion, Orland.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 29, in the Bubb Funeral Chapel North, 3910 N. Main Street, Mishawaka. Funeral services will be held in the funeral home at 11 a.m. Tuesday, with Rev. Mark Emelander of Orland Congregational Church officiating.

He was born August 19, 1913, the son of Guy and Luella (James) McKee. McKee, a navy veteran of World War II, retired from the Campbell Soup Company.

He and his wife, Laura Louise, were married July 23, 1938.

She survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Susan Bennett of South Bend; two sons, Tim of Chesapeake, VA., and Daniel of Brown County; a brother, Leo of Fremont, Ohio, and four grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. in the Orland Congregational Church with the Rev. Mark Emlander officiating.

Lawrence Hartman Dies Age 62; Services Today

Lawrence Hartman, 62, Route 4, Plymouth, well known lifetime farmer of the Rutland communtiy, died Sunday afternoon, MArch 15, at Parkview Hospital in Plymouth following a four month illness.

Born May 26, 1901 to William H. and Rena Hartman at Rutland, he was married at Plymouth to Ophra E Ringer, who survices. Also surviving with the wife are a daughter Mrs. Richard (Mary Ruth) Thompson Route 4, Plymouth; two sons Darwin of Route 1 Plymouth and Leo at home; three grandchildren; his mother Mrs. Rena Hartman of Route 4 Plymouth; and three brothers Clarence, Route 4, Plymouth and Ruben and Robert both of Plymouth.

His father and a sister preceded him in death.

Services are being held today, MArch 18, at the Grossman funeral home at Agos with the Rev. W Ray Kuhn of Plymouth, pastor of the Popular Grove Methodist Church officiating. Internment will be made in the New Oak Hill Cemetery at Plymouth.

Frankie C. Hawk, aged 61, who resided on a farm six miles southeast of Argos died at 7:20 o'clock Thursday evening in the Parkview hospital in Plymouth. Death was due to pneumonia and followed an illness of 24 hours.

The deceased was born on a farm near where he lived August 8, 1877 and was the son of Frank and Arwesta Hawk. He lived in the Walnut community all of his life where he followed the occupation of farming. In a ceremony which was performed on March 7, 1901 the deceased was married to Ida Kuhn. Mr. Hawk was a member of the Brethren Church at Walnut. Survivors are the widow; a sister Mrs. Ray Bowers of Argos and a brother, Roscoe Hawk of Rochester.

The funeral services will be held at 2:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon from the Walnut Brethren Church with the pastor of the church, Rev. C. C. CRIPE, officiating. Burial will be made in the cemetery adjacent to the church. Rosco L. Hawk, 85, R.R. 3, Rochester, died at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Fairview nursing home in Plymouth where he had resided since suffering a cerebral stroke Dec. 1.

Mr. Hawk was born Dec. 2, 1880 in Richland township to Franklin and Arwesta Miles Hawk. He had lived in the Walnut community for many years and was a member of the Christian church at Tiosa before it burned down. He moved to Rochester in 1956.

He married Nellie R. Rogers March 27, 1904 in Tiosa. She died Sept. 8, 1957.

Surviving are a son, Roy M. Hawk, R.R. 1, Argos, and nieces and nephews. Mr. Hawk was the last member of his family.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Grossman funeral home in Plymouth with the Rev. Russell Good officiating. Burial will be in the Richland Center I.O.O.F. cemetery.

Mrs. Nellie R. Hawk, 72, died Sunday morning at 7:55 o'clock at her home a half-mile north of Rochester on U.S. 31.

She was born Oct. 2, 1884, the daughter of William and Sada BECK ROGERS. On March 7, 1904, she was married to Rosco HAWK, who survives.

The Hawks had lived for many years on a farm southeast of Argos and moved three years ago to their home north of Rochester.

Mrs. Hawk lived all her live in Fulton and Marshall counties. She was a member of the Tiosa Christian church.

Also surviving are one son, Roy M. , R.R. 1, Argos; three sisters, Mrs. Charles (Dollie) Town, Rochester; Mrs. Otis (Ethel) Nellans, R.R. 3, Argos, and Mrs. Dean (Grethel) Mow, R.R. 3, Rochester; and several nieces and nephews.

Roy M. HAWK, 67, R.R. 1, Argos, died at 4:45 p.m. Monday (February 12, 1973) in Parkview hospital at Plymouth after a brief illness. He was admitted to the hospital Sunday evening after a heart seizure in his home.

He was born Oct. 2, 1905 in Walnut township, Marshall county, near his present home, and had resided all his life in that community except for two years in Galien, Mich.

He was married to Jean Partridge Jan. 25, 1929 in Rochester; she survives.

He was the son of Roscoe and Nellie Rodgers Hawk.

A lifetime farmer, he recently retired. He was a member of the Christian church, Argos Masonic Lodge No. 399 and St. Joe Valley Scottish Rite of South Bend.

Mr. Bower was born Oct. 9, 1871, in Fulton county near Richland Center, the son of Josiah and Sarah Jane Bitter Bower. He was married on Jan. 1, 1900, to Tootie M. Hawk, who survives.

Mr. Bower had lived at his farm home five miles southeast of Argos for 45 years, moving there from Elkhart. Prior to moving to Elkhart, he had resided in Akron. He was a member of the Walnut Church of the Brethren.

Surviving besides the widow, at home, is a son, Franklin J., South Bend.

He was born in Huntington to William and Martha Hawk Bower. He moved from South Bend to Argos in 1974. On Sept. 5, 1936 in South Bend he married Roumania VanArsdale, who survives. He worked for 40 years in the engineering department of the Studebaker Corporation in South Bend. He retired in 1963.

He was a member of the Argos Bible Church, the St. Joseph Masonic Lodge and the South Bend Scottish Rite.

On Sept. 5, 1936 in South Bend she married Franklin L. Bower who died Jan. 29, 1992.

She moved to Argos from South Bend in 1974. She was a homemaker and member of the Argos Bible Church, and the Order of Eastern Star 2, South Bend.

David Hawk, born on 5 Oct 1824, was the eldest of nine children born to Louis and Eva Hawk in Northhampton County, Pennsylvania. In. 1834 the family moved to Seneca County, Ohio, where the father purchased a 40 acre farm near West Lodie and set up his blacksmith shop and began clearing the land. Nine years later, in 1843, the father died at the early age of only 41.

David had now reached the age of 19 and with the help of neighbors, he managed to learn his father's blacksmith trade.

David first married Mary Ann Swick and to this union was born one son, Franklin, who is the grandfather of Robert Hawk of Leiters Ford. After a few short years David was bereft of his wife.

In 1855 he married Catherine Filar. When their eldest child, Sarah was bout three years old, they moved westward by wagon from Seneca County, Ohio. to Perry twp Allen County, Indiana and set up housekeeping on a farm. After living there a little more than a year, they moved still farther westward and settled in Marshall County, on the west side of what is now known as Hawk Lake south of Culver; the Hawk Homestead . Here four sons were born: David Jr., Edwin, John and Rollen.

Here David set up his blacksmith shop, shoeing oxen as well as horsed and mules. By hard work and strict economy, David and Catherine were able to provide each of their children with a farm of 80 acres near the old homestead. Here in 1908 David died at the age of 84. Catherine died in 1927.

Rollen Hawk being the youngest child, received the homestead farm. He was born in 1879, and in 1902 he married Elizabeth Kline, who was his partner for over 56 years. Rollen did custom work for many years, operating a threshing machine with a steam engine. He also did custom silo filling, corn shredding, clover h ulling, and wood buzzing, in addition to his farming.

One child Veenice, was born to Rollen and Elizabeth Hawk. She graduated from Culver High School in 1931, having spent all 12 years in the same school system. In. 1935 she graduated from Manchester College as a business education and math teacher. Her first job was at Tyner High School with a salary of $1,000.

In 1940 she married Lawrence White, an ordained minister in the former Evangelical Church. To this union two children were born: Joyce Elaine and Larry David, both of whom graduated from Indiana Central College.

Joyce became an elementary teacher and taught third grade at Greenwood until her death in 1966.

In 1970 Larry married Debra Henderson. They have two daughter, Tammie Lynn and Tina Renee, and now reside in Pensacola, Florida where Larry is a computer chemical analyst.

In 1960 Elizabeth Hawk passed away at the age of 79.

Veenice and her family then came to live with her father, Rollen, on the homestead farm.

Rollen died in 1963 at the age of 83.

Veenice and Lawrence White are still living on the Hawk Homestead Farm - Mrs. Lawrence White.

Estella M. (HAWK) BATZ, 78, Downers Grove, Ill., died at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in Hinsdale hospital at Hinsdale, Ill. She had been ill seven months. She was the sister of Edward HAWK of Rochester.

Born Feb. 18, 1891, at Culver , she was the daughter of Franklin and Eldora KINSEY HAWK. Her marriage was April 11, 1914, at Culver , to Gano W. BATZ. He died Aug. 20, 1958. She had been a resident of the Fulton and Marshall county areas many years.

Also surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Mary WINDSTEN and Miss Florence BATZ, both of Downers Grove, Ill.; one son, John BATZ, South Bend; and one half-brother, Arnie HORNER, of San Diego.

Estella Batz Dies Tuesday m Illinois

Mrs. Estella M . Batz, 78, died a t 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 17 at the Hrndsdale Hospital, Hindsdale, Ill. She was residing at 631 Chicago Avenue, Downers Grove, Illinois. She had been ill for seven months.

She was born on February 18, 1891 in Culver and had lived in Marshall and Fulton Counties her entire lifetime. She was married on April 11, 1914 in Culver to Gano W. Batz who preceded her i n death on August 20, 1953. Her parents were Franklin and Eldora Kinsey Hawk.

Survivors include two daughters; Mrs. Mary Windsten and Miss Florence Batz both of Downers Grove, Illinois; one son, John Batz of South Bend; one brother, Edward Hawk of Rochester and a halc brother, Arnie Horner of San Diego, California.

Leona Mae Hawk, Nov. 14, 1909-April 9, 2006, Leona Mae HAWK, 96, Life Care Center of Rochester, formerly of the Tiosa and Leiters Ford areas, departed this life to join her husband and heavenly family in eternal rest at 3:50 a.m. Sunday from her residence.

She was born the daughter of Earl and Ida Arven Gibson on Nov. 14, 1909, in the Reiter Community, southwest of Rochester, in Fulton County. She had lived most of her life in the Fulton County areas of Rochester, Leiters Ford and Richland Center.

On Feb. 22, 1930, in Rochester, she was wed to Edward L. Hawk. They were married for more than 50 years when he preceded her in death on April 21, 1980.

She had been a faithful employee of the former Frank Manufacturing, Mentone, where she worked for 19 years until she retired in 1975. She was a member of First Brethren Church of Tiosa and she also had formerly been an active member of the Mount Hope United Methodist Church, where she had served her Lord as the President of the Women's Society of Christian Service (WSCS) in the church. At Tiosa, she was active in the Women's Missionary Society (WMS).

She is survived by a daughter, Terry Partridge and husband Michael, Allen, Texas; a son, Donald and wife Mary Hawk, Cape Coral, Fla., nine grandchildren; Randy Hawk and Becky Beatty, both of Rochester, Caramia Hawk and Donald Kim Hawk, both of Ft. Myers, Fla., Kevin Hawk and Karen Harding, both of Cape Coral, Fla., Cindy Bennett, Bokeelia, Fla., Heather Hornick, Woodbridge, Va., and Kami Tucker, Spring Lake, Mich; 14 great-grandchildren; several step great-grandchildren; and a foster sister, Arlene Baer and husband Emery, Logansport.

Preceding her in eternal rest with her parents and husband are a daughter, Carol Hawk in 1957; a son, Robert E. Hawk on May 31, 1999; a granddaughter, Linda Kay Hawk; three brothers, Herschel, Charles and Francis Gibson; and two daughters-in-law, Esther Jean Hawk on July 11, 1979, and Emma F. Hawk on June 16, 1999.

A celebration of Leona's life will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Good Family Funeral Home, 1200 W. 18th St. (Indiana 14 West), Rochester, with Pastor Larry Stutzman officiating.

She will be laid to rest with her husband in the Richland Center Independent Order of Odd Fellows Cemetery, northwest of Rochester.

Wednesday, June 2, 1999 Robert Eugene HAWK, 65, Leiters Ford, died 9:20 p.m. Monday of injuries sustained in a traffic accident on Indiana 110.

Born to Edward L. and Leona Mae GIBSON HAWK in Fulton County, he married Esther Jean WALTZ on Feb. 10, 1953 in Rochester. She died July 11, 1979. He married Emma ANDERSON on Nov. 13, 1981 in Rochester. She survives at home.

Mr. Hawk owned and operated Hawk's Garage, Leiters Ford, since 1959 with his son, Randy. He and wife Emma owned and operated Lazer Measuring System, a distance measuring device used at tractor and truck pulls throughout the country. He was a member of Mt. Hope United Methodist Church. A. U.S. Navy veteran, he was involved with Indiana Pullers, Inc., National Tractor Pullers Association, Bi-County Classic Tractor and Truck Pull, and Richland Center I.O.O.F. Lodge 435.

He was active in Leiters Ford through his involvement with the Fire Department, the Strawberry Festival, Community Mosquito Control Group, Leiters Ford Improvement Association, and the Merchants Association. He also was involved with "Prairie Gold Rush," a magazine about Classic Mineapolis Moline Tractors and the Minneapolis Moline Collectors Club.

Survivors include one daughter, Becky Sue and husband Steven BEATTY, Rochester; one son, Randy Eugene and wife Janice HAWK, Rochester; 24 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; his mother, Rochester; one sister, Terry and husband Michael PARTRIDGE, Allen, Texas; one brother, Donald E. and wife Mary HAWK, Cape Coral, Fla.; three stepdaughters, Kylene and husband, Dale CHAMBERLIN, Ronda and husband Rodney COLE, and Lovie COOK, all from Norfolk, Neb.; two stepsons, Kyle Gene and wife Chae DELP, Colorado, and Gerald and wife Tim DELP, Terrel, Texas; several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, a daughter, Linda Kay HAWK, a stepson, Dennis DELP, and a sister, Carol HAWK.

Services are 10 a.m. Saturday at Foster & Good Funeral Home, Rochester, with Rev. Robert METZGER officiating. Burial and military graveside services conducted by the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars will be in Leiters Ford Cemetery. Mrs. Esther J. HAWK, 45, Leiters Ford, became Fulton county's fourth traffic fatality of 1979 Wednesday when she died from injuries suffered in a two-car crash at County Road 600 West and County Road 600 North at 10:40 p.m.

Mrs. Hawk died from massive head injuries after being thrown from her vehicle.

Mrs. Hawk was driving south on County Road 600 West. Her car was struck at the intersection with County Road 600 North by a vehicle driven by Jerry E. BURTON, 16, Leiters Ford, who was headed west on County Road 600 North.

Burton stated to police that when he approached the intersection, he applied his brakes but they failed and his car entered the intersection, striking the Hawk car in the side.

Burton suffered a laceration to his head and bruises to his shoulder and ankle. He was admitted to Woodlawn hospital and is listed in fairly good condition.

A passenger in the Hawk auto, Becky S. HAWK, 18, Leiters Ford, suffered lacerations and was treated and released from Woodlawn hospital.

Damage was $650 to the Burton auto and $1,300 to Mrs. Hawk's.

The last fatalities in Fulton county occurred May 18 when two Rochester youths were killed when their car struck a tree on Old U.S. 31 south of Olson Road.

Mrs. Hawk was born March 10, 1934 in Fulton county to John and Hazil CLAY WALTZ and had lived most of her life in Fulton county. She was married Feb. 10, 1953 in Rochester to Robert HAWK, who survives. She assisted her husband in operating the Hawk's service station and garage in Leiters Ford. She was a member of the Leiters Ford United Methodist church.

Surviving with the husband are a daughter, Becky Sue [HAWK], at home; a son, Randy Eugene [HAWK], also at home; four sisters, Mrs. Harold (Marjorie) GIBBONS, R.R. 2, Rochester; Mrs. Donald (Irene) OLSON, R.R. 4, Rochester Mrs. Jack (Betty) FAWLAY, Mentone, and Miss Patsy WALTZ, East Chicago, and two brothers, Richard WALTZ, R.R. 1, Rochester, and Byron WALTZ, R.R. 4, Rochester. A daughter, the parents, a sister and a brother preceded in death.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Foster & Good funeral home with the Rev. Alva WARD officiating. Burial will be in the Leiters Ford I.O.O.F. cemetery. Friends may call Friday from 3-9 p.m. and on Saturday until the hour of service.

Randy E. Hawk Dec. 28, 1957 - Sept. 14, 2012 Leiters Ford businessman Mr. Randy Hawk, 54, passed away on Friday afternoon, Sept. 14 at Woodlawn Hospital, Rochester. Randy and his wife Janice owned and operated Hawk's Garage in Leiters Ford, where he was a master mechanic with special expertise on Minneapolis-Moline farm machinery.

Born in Rochester's Woodlawn Hospital, on Dec. 28, 1957, Randy E. Hawk was the son of Robert Eugene and Esther Jean Waltz Hawk. Growing up he shared his childhood with his little sister Becky. During his years at Culver Community High School, Randy played the trumpet in the band and he enjoyed intramural basketball league. His love of music was a lifelong passion, as each summer he looked forward to playing his trumpet and joining the Summer Stage Band. In 1976 with great Cavalier pride, he graduated with his class. During his youth he acquired a steady work ethic and vast knowledge of diesel maintenance and repair from his dad and spending many hours at the garage. It was June 29, 1991, on the sparkling waters of Lake Maxinkuckee, the sun shone brightly when Randy married his best friend and the love of his life Janice Borer. Together they raised three handsome sons Joe, Kevin and Brian. The family tree grew with the added blessings of two grandsons Braxton and Jaxon. Randy adored his sons, nephews, nieces and grandsons. He was always there for them, sharing a common sense approach to life and life's lessons, influencing them as a wonderful role model during their formative years. In addition to the diesel engine work Randy, specialized in building custom Minneapolis-Moline irrigation engines for many area farmers. Randy also was a successful sales representative for the AgVenture/McKillip Seed Company. He owned a unique collection of M-M scale tractors and enjoyed the sport of tractor pulling, attending events all over Indiana and Illinois. As an armchair athlete, Randy loved NASCAR, especially Tony Stewart and Dale Jr., drag racing and cheering for the Indianapolis Colts. A vibrant leader of his community, Randy served as President of both Aubbeenaubbee Township Improvement Association and the Richland Center Community Association. He was an active member of the Leiters Ford Merchant's Association, the Fulton County Historical Power Association, Richland Center Tractor Pullers and the Richland Center IOOF Lodge no. 435. Remembered for his love of mowing grass, it was Randy's tradition to head off to Culver's Original Root Beer Stand for an ice cold root beer after mowing the Hawk farm. An accomplished grill master, Randy's specialties were brats, burgers and steaks; always grilling them in large quantities. He and Janice hosted the annual family fish fry. Randy was known for his generous support of his communities, local business and youth, especially 4-H and the Culver youth sports l eagues. Greeting him at home after work each evening were his black labs Jake and Daisy. He and Jake had a routine to play some ball, just to unwind. An annual tradition was planting his coveted soybean plant. Randy nurtured it and watered it adding the correct amounts of fertilizer to enhance the plant growth. Then suddenly one summer, someone pointed out that his treasured soybean was instead a moon flower. He and Janice enjoyed eating out. Their favorite vacation destinations were Florida and Branson, Mo.

Randy is lovingly remembered by his wife Janice, at home; three sons, Joe Jimenez, Rochester, Kevin Jimenez and wife Jordan of Peru, Brian Jimenez and wife Shawna, Zionsville; two grandsons, Braxton and Jaxon Jimenez, of Peru, and a sister Becky Beatty of Rochester. Randy was regarded as a second father by his nephews Ryan Beatty and Derek Beatty. Also surviving are a sister-in-law, Joyce and Martin Dominique; three brothers-in-law, David and Mary Borer, Donald Borer and companion Pat Burke, and John Borer. Numerous stepbrothers, stepsisters, nieces, nephews and cousins and his devoted canine companions Jake and Daisy also survive. He was preceded in death by his mother Esther, father Bob, and stepmother Emma.

A celebration of the life of Mr. Randy Hawk will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 19 at the Good Family Funeral Home, Rochester. Friends may visit with his family from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday and an hour prior to service on Wednesday. Pastor Bob Metzger will officiate. Bom to Herman and Flossie BEBEE ANDERSON in Pierce County, Neb., she married Kyle I. DELP in August 1947. They divorced. She married the late Robert E. HAWK on Nov. 13, 1981 in South Bend.

Mrs. Hawk and her late husband owned and operated Lazer Measuring Systems, a distance measuring device used at truck and tractor pulls throughout the country. In a sudden fit of insanity,
David Hawk, Jr. shoots himself four times
with a revolver and dies in about one hour.,br> The whole community shocked and sorrowful.

Our citizens were greatly shocked last Sunday morning to hear that David Hawk, Jr., who lived about three-quarters of a mile south of Culver , was dead from the result of shots fired from a revolver by his own hands, and scarcely any person could believe that such an occurrence had really happened.

Almost everyone in town and vicinity visited the premises where the awful deed was committed to see for themselves and be convinced. Coroner, Dr. Sarber, of Argos, was notified and that gentleman was soon on his way to hold an inquest according to law.

At the house, the agonizing grief of the family and relatives over the terrible calamity, caused the tears to flow from the eyes of many.

The evidence given at the inquest brought out the following facts:

David, as was his usual custom had arisen about 6 o’clock a.m. and went to the barn to care for his stock and about 7:30 came to the house for breakfast. At breakfast he told his wife to be ready in time to go to Sabbath school and to have the children ready. After breakfast he went out to the barn to finish his chores and about 8:45 came to the house, sat down and handing his pocketbook to one of his children and told her to take out all the pennies they needed and then left it lying upon the table. His wife seeing that he did not begin to get ready, inquired if he was not going to Sabbath school, he answering that he did not feel well and would not go. His wife said that if he did not wish to go she would go and take the children and asked him to get the team ready which he consented to do, and then left the house for the barn, placed the harness upon the horses and ran the carriage out.

Mrs. Katie Hawk his mother, was coming past the barnyard when she heard two noises which sounded like two boards were being struck together and something that sounded like moaning. While the mother was in the yard, Dave’s wife came out of the house and went to the barn to see if there was any trouble. Not finding him at the barn, she passed around to a cow or sheep shed where there were sick animals. Instantly the wife came running out of the cow stable stricken with horror, exclaiming, “Dave has shot himself.” Both women then returned to the scene, and Mrs. Katie Hawk made a frantic appeal for her son to speak to her, but received no reply.

Word was sent to the neighbors who hurried to the scene as soon as possible, others bringing needed medical assistance. David was tenderly conveyed to the house, Dr. Wiseman halting them on the way to make a superficial examination to look for hemorage and finding but very little, directed them to carry him on to the house, and placed him upon a lounge. The physician found his pulse weak, the heart sounds almost inaudible and the respiration obstructed. A small amount of chloroform was administered. Dr. Rea and Dr. Hollister were also summoned, but when they arrived the man was dead.


The Coroner’s examination of the body proved that four shots had been fired, two in the chest and two in the base of the right ear. The two in the chest were in the lower third about an inch to the right of the median line, and one had struck the sixth rib and passed downward and the other had struck the fifth rib and passed upward penetrating the extreme right of the chest, neither striking the heart. The two shots in the head: One had struck the lower portion of the temporal bone, seemingly passing upward while the other was indeterminate.

David Hawk, Jr., was born April 9, 1864, and departed this life April 16, 1899, aged 35 years, and 7 days.

Being the son of christian parents he was consecrated to the Lord in holy baptism in his infancy; and at an early age he assumed in his own name the sacred vows made by his parents at his baptism, thus becoming a communicant member of the Reformed church, with which he remained a member until his death.

He was united in marriage with Miss Carrie Burkett December 22, 1887, to which union four children were given, one of which preceded them on the other shore.

He leaves his companion, 3 children, his aged parents, 4 brothers, one sister and many other relatives to mourn their loss.

May the Lord sustain and comfort them all in this sad bereavement.”

Funeral services were held at the Reformed church on Tuesday at 10 o’clock a.m., Rev. Barber officiating. The church and gallery were literally packed with people, while a hundred or more filled the entrance and remained upon the outside, and over four hundred people viewed the remains.

Rev. Barber took his text from the 27th chapter of Proverbs, 1st verse. He prefaced his sermon with timely remarks concerning the motive of the deplorable act on the part of the deceased, and cautioned his hearers against rendering harsh judgment against the living or dead, as God, who doeth all things well, only knows the cause. The Rev. gentleman intimated and “justly so” that the living mourners nearest and dearest to the departed, had enough to bear without being subjected to the criticism and unjust accusations. The sermon was f ull of God’s forgiving love toward all erring humanity, which was a great solace to the deeply bereaved relatives and friends. The services were heart-rendering in the extreme, and there were but few dry eyes in the church. The remains were buried in Culver cemetery.

David Hawk, Jr., was an honest and exemplary farmer and highly respected by all who knew him. He was in good financial circumstances, his family relations were all that could be wished, and what led him to commit self-destruction can never be known and will remain in the possession of himself and his God. The bereaved family receives the sympathy of the entire community, and all that is possible is being done to comfort them.

Albert Lucas Duddleson, age 72, Route 2, Culver, retired farmer, died of a heart attack at his home Sunday morning. He had been in, po'or health for four years.

Born near Culver on Aug. 30,1890, Mr. Duddleson has spent his lifetime here. In 1911 he was married to Miss Tressie Hawk of Culver who survives.

Also surviving are one son, Norman, South Bend, one brother, Alvin Duddleson, Britt, Iowa; three sisters, Mrs. Elsie Wagner and, Mrs. Ferriol Licht both of Culver snd Mrs. Zelta Deck, South Bend.

Duddleson was a member of Grace United Church of Christ.

Funeral services were held at __ .m. Tuesday, Nov. 6, at the, Easterday Funeral Home in Culver.

FUneral Services Held Sunday for John A Hawk

John Alvin Hawk, age 87, died early Friday morning at the Ruff Nursing home in Knox where he had been a patient for about three years.

Mr. Hawk was born near Culver on April 5, 1872 and had spent his entire life here farming. His wife, Byrdie Catherin, preceded him in death in 1950 and soon after her death he retired from farming.

Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Callie Culter and Mrs. Mary Landis both of Culver; and Mrs Ruth Campbell of Logansport; one son, Robert of Goshen; one brother Rollen, of Culver, gour grasndchildren; and one great grandchild

Services were held at the Easterday Funeral Home at 2 p.m. Sunday with Rev. Kendall Sams pastor of the Culver Methods Church officiating. Burial was at Culver Cemetery.

Mrs. Byrdie Hawk Passed Away Sunday; Final Rites Today

Mrs. Byrdie C. Hawk, 76, wife of John Hawk, died at her home in Culver, Sunday evening, after an illness of three years. She was born near Fort Wayne, Ind., came to this community with her parents when a child and has lived most of her life here. She attended the Culver Evangelical and Reformed church, and was a member of the Pythian Sisters and Rebekah lodges.

Surviving with her husband are three daughters , Mrs. Callie Culter, Culver, Mrs. Ruth Campbell, Logansport, and Mrs. Mary Landis, Culver; one son, Robert Goshen, Ind., one sister, Mrs. Delia Neidlinger, Plymouth; four grand children and two great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at two o’clock Wednesday afternoon at the Easterday Funeral Home with Dr. Harding Sexton officiating. Burial will be at the Culver cemetery - - Culver Citizen Wednesday, January 4, 1950

PLYMOUTH - Virginia Ruth Baker, age 93, of 1526 Kenwood Ave., Plymouth, Indiana, passed away at 7:00 a.m. on Friday, October 19, 2012, at her home with her loved ones by her side.

Virginia was born on May 2, 1919, in Culver, Indiana, to Ambrose L. and Callie C. (Hawk) Martin. Her parents divorced in 1928 and Virginia never saw nor heard where her father was for the next 30 years. During her school years, she lived with her grandparents, John and Byrdie Hawk, on a farm outside of Culver.

She married Richard E. Baker in May 1936; together they raised their three children, Deanna (Richard) Langfeldt, Arlene (Chris) Batalis and Richard Baker. The Bakers moved to Plymouth in 1955. Richard and Virginia celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on the island of Kauai before Richard passed away in October 1986.

After her husband passed away, Virginia spent her winter months in Zolfo Springs, Florida, until 2002. Virginia worked as an inspector for Wagner Industries, later known as United Technologies, and served as a president/financial secretary to the local IBEW union for the next 25 years. She was also a charter member of the Auxiliary of VFW in Culver with 50 years of continuous membership and was awarded a lifetime membership. Virginia belonged to the Culver Rebeccah Lodge and was a member of the Order of Eastern Star/Ivy Chapter 69. She was known for her hobbies, ceramics and quilted pillows, which she displayed in the horse barn of the Blueberry Festival until 1988. For the past nine years, she had sold her quilted tops at the Topeka Quilt Show. She also loved to garden and work with flowers. Virginia loved to travel. She had been to Stockton on the Tees, England, Scotland, Wales, Canada, and 40 of the 50 United States. For the past ten years, she spent three weeks in Kauai, Hawaii.

Virginia is survived by her three children: two daughters, Deanna (Richard, deceased) Langfeldt of Garrett, Indiana, and Arlene (Chris) Batalis of South Bend, Indiana; and son, Richard Baker of Indianapolis, Indiana. Also surviving are nine grandchildren, Greg Langfeldt of Dallas, Texas, Connie (Sean) Derry of Culver, Indiana, Jon (Lori) Langfeldt of Garrett, Indiana, Tim Batalis of South Bend, Indiana, Philip (Cindy) Batalis of Granger, Indiana, Melanie Batalis of Indianapolis, Indiana, Heather Baker of Plymouth, Indiana, and Stefanie Baker of Bourbon, Indiana; fourteen great-grandchildren, Drew, Conlan and Shannon Derry of Culver, Indiana, Nicholas Batalis of South Bend, Indiana, Stephanie and Jason Batalis of Granger, Indiana, Jena and Elizabeth Baker, Autumn Wilcox and Andrew Knowlton of Plymouth, Indiana, Skyler and Dejena Thews, and Parker and Eliza Posie of Bourbon, Indiana; sisters, Shirley (Jerry, deceased) Clark of Springfield, Illinois, Karen (Eugene) Deeds and Susan (Virgil) Hudkins, both of Rochester; and four brothers, Ronald (Dorothy) Martin of McAllen, Texas, Donald Martin of Florida, John Fisher of Las Vegas, Nevada, and Jim (Mary Fisher of Rochester, Indiana. Virginia was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Richard; four brothers, Robert, Ralph, Charles and LeRoy Martin; and her granddaughter, April Baker. Errol T. Culter Dies At Age 72 After llliness

Errol T. Culter, age 72, 215 North Ohio Street, died at 12:30 a.m. Monday, March 6, at his home following an illness of one year.

Born Sept. 15, 1894, in Norway, Maine, to Albion and Mary (Bragdon) Culter, Mr. Culter h a d lived in Culver 22 years, coming from Wyoming.

A union painter by trade, Mr. Culter was married May 8. 1945, in Cheyenne, Wyo., to Callie C. Hawk, who survives w i t h twostep-daughters. Mrs. Richard (Virginia) Baker of Plymouth and Mrs. Jerald (Shirley) Clark of Springfield. Ill., seven grandchildren, a n d five great-grandchildren.

Mr. Culter was a member of the Culver Grace United Church of Christ, the Henry H. Culver Lodge. No. 617 F. and A.M., the Emily Jane Culver Chapter, Order of Eastern Star, and the South Bend Scottish Rite.

Services were held at 2 p.m. (CST), Wednesday, March 8, at the Culver Grace United Church of Christ, with the pastor, Rev. Harold H. Hohman, officiating. Burial followed in the Culver Masonic Cemetery.

Rollen Hawk, 83, of South Tamerack Road, ROute 2, Culver, died at 2 p.m. Friday, March 1, at the Parkview Hospital, where he had been taken by ablulance earlier in the day. He had been in ill health for the past four months.

Mr. Hawk was born on Oct. 16, 1879. In a log cabin house which sat on the site of his present home. He was married on Sept., 21 1902, to ELizabeth Kline of Culver and spent his entire lifetime on the same farm. Mrs. Hawk prededed him in death on May 23, 1960

Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Veenice White of Culver; and two grandchildren, Joyce and Larry White of Culver.

Funeral Services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 3 at the Culver Evangelical United Brethern Church with the Rev. Walter Chisholm, pastor of the church officiating. Burial was in the Culver Masonic cemetery. The Easterday-Bonnie Funeral home was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs Rollen Hawk Dies Following Two Year Illness

Mrs. ELizabeth Rachel Hawk, age 79, wife of Rollen Hawk, died Monday morning at her home south of Culver. She had been ill for two years.

Born in Marshall county near culver on Oct. 21, 1880, Mrs. Hawk spent most of her life in this community

Surviving with her husband are one daughter, Mrs. Lawrence White of DOnaldson; on brother, Ralph Kline, Plymouth and two grandchildren.

Mrs Hawk was a member of the EMmanuel Evangelical United Brethern Chruch in Culver where funeral services were held at 10 a.m. today, Rv. Vernon L. Palmer, pastor of the church, officiated and burial was at the Culver cemetery. The Easterday Funeral hom was in charge of arrangements.

[An only child] Veenice, was born to Rollen and Elizabeth Hawk. She graduated from Culver High School in 1931, having spent all 12 years in the same school system. In. 1935 she graduated from Manchester College as a business education and math teacher. Her first job was at Tyner High School with a salary of $1,000.

In 1940 she married Lawrence White, an ordained minister in the former Evangelical Church. To this union two children were born: Joyce Elaine and Larry David, both of whom graduated from Indiana Central College.

Joyce became an elementary teacher and taught third grade at Greenwood until her death in 1966.

In 1970 Larry married Debra Henderson. They have two daughter, Tammie Lynn and Tina Renee, and now reside in Pensacola, Florida where Larry is a computer chemical analyst.

In 1960 Elizabeth Hawk passed away at the age of 79; Veenice and her family then came to live with her father, Rollen, on the homestead farm.

Veenice and Lawrence White are still living on the Hawk Homestead Farm - Mrs. Lawrence White.

Lawrence was an ordained minister in the former Evangelical Church in 1960 mentioned was made in the Culver Citizen "Donaldson-grovertown circuit, formerly served by Rev. Lawrence White of Culver . Rev. White will be the pastor of the Kewanna circuit this coming year" and also a well known photographer in the Culver, Marshall County, Indiana area; he was noted for his photgraphs of the Culver Union Fire Department as well as major fires within Culver and Union Township.

In 1960 Veenice's family then came to live with her father, Rollen, on the homestead farm and after her father died the White's continued to live on the Hawk Homestead Farm on the shores of Hawk Lake on Tamarack Road Union Township, Marshall county Indiana until sometime in the 1990's when they entered the Wesley Manor Retirement community at Frankfort, Clinton, Indiana

Lawrence was the son of Raymond White and Gertrude B Snyder he had two brothers:

The WHite family moved to New Carlisle, where the father was employed as a farmer at the Haven Hubbard Home. The White family then moved to a farm near Richland Center, Fulton county, Indiana and then in 1929 moved to a farm on Peach Road east of Culver.
