'Joe' Joseph A. Hafert, D.D.S.



Joe was born and raised in Ft. Wayne, Allen, Indiana.

Back in the 1920's he was patrol leader for a local Boy Scout unit in Fort Wayne. Joe and this unit were accredited for finding the burial polt of the ledgendary Johnny Appleseed in 1924 which was unearthed from under overgrowth and brush. The location was a sandy and grassy knoll which over looked the river which was a part of the Archer farm and later Archer Park located off of colisum Blouevard. The discovers of the gravesite had went un-recongized until the bicentennieal year (1976).

He attended Loyola dental school.; working several jobs before moving to Fulton, Fulton, Indiana and then to Logansport, Cass, Indiana but retained his dentistry practice there. Retiring in the 1960's the Hafert's moved permanently into their cottage

He was a Justice of the Peace for Union township for many years prior to and during his retirement to the lake; until the office of Justice of Peace was abolished. He had an area of the garage set-up for his court.






Dr. Joe A. Hafert, 85, Culver , a dentist, who had practiced in Fulton for 35 years prior to his retirement in 1969, died last Wedensday in St. Vincent Hospice, Indianapolis.

Born September 22, 1908 in Warsaw, he was the son of William J. and Edith Alleman Hafert.


He was a member of the Episcopal Church, F ulton, Methodist Masonic Lodge No 665, the Logansport Elks Club and Odd Fellows Lodge No. 373 of Culver . He was a graduate of Wayne South Side High School.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Jane H. Murdock Hafert, in 1971.

Survivors included a daughter, Jo Anna Booher of Zionsville, one grandaughter and 2 great grandchildren.

Memorial contributions maybe made to St. Francis Episcopal Church, Zionsville, where services were held.

Mrs. Jane M. Hafert, 60, Culver , died at 3:30 a.m. Monday in Parkview hospital at Plymouth. She was the wife of Dr. Joseph A. HAFERT, former Fulton dentist.

Born Sept. 21, 1911, at Logansport, she was the daughter of Frederick and Hazel Shepherd Murdock. She was a member of the Episcopal church.

Surviving with her husband is a daughter, Mrs. Jo Anna Leffler, Beech Grove.

Final rites will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Trinity Episcopal church in Logansport. The Rev. Wright Johnson will officiate.

Burial will be in the Mount Hope cemetery at Logansport.

    Nila used to be a part of the Seniors citizens Meal's on Wedensday and enjoy playing the piano.
