C. M. Muehlhausen Dies Following Short Illness

Charles M. Muehlhausen, 207 E . Shore Road, Culver , died at 11:10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 3, at Memorial Hospital in Logansport where he had been a patient since suffering a stroke while playing golf at Culver on Sept. 25. He was 84.

Mr. Muehlhausen was born Feb. 1, 1880, in Chicago, the son of Henry and Catherina Ludolph Muehlhausen and was married in Chicago on June 27, 1916, to Minnie Mitrits, a native of Hungary, who survives.

Mr. Muehlhausen was part owner of Muehlhausen Spring Company, now Muehlhausen Spring Division of Rockwell Standard Corp. The company was formed in Chicago in the early 1920's and was moved to Logansport in 1929. At the time of its foundation, Charles Muehlhausen was in the garage business, which he later sold to join his nephews in the spring factory. The spring factory at Logansport was sold to the Rockwell firm in 1940, after which Mr. Muehlhausen retired and moved to Culver .

He was an ardent baseball fan and golfer. In his youth, Muehlhausen received several offers to play major league baseball but turned them down. Instead, he played semi-professional ball in Chicago on the weekends while employed by the Gibson Spring Company of that city.

He was a member of Tipton Masonic Lodge No. 33, the Elks Club, and the Maxinkuckee Country Club. He was also active in the Kiwanis Club while in Logansport.

During World War I I he was one of the three members of the Cass County rationing board. The board was first known as the Tire Rationing Board, and Muehlhausen then referred to the board as, "Three Tired Retired Men."

Muehlhausen was also instrumental in the forming of the Sea Scout organization at Logansport and it was through his initiative that a replica ship was constructed along Eel River for a meeting place for the Scouts.

Surviving with the widow are three sons, Almon of Chicago, Robert of Indianapolis, and Gordon of Logansport;. a sister, Mrs. Catherine Easter, Evanston, I n d .; nine grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; a nephew, Walter Muehlhausen of Culver ; and several others nephews. One son,Fred, and seven brothers preceded him in death.

Services were held Tuesday, Oct. 6, at McCloskey-Hamilton- Kahle Funeral Home in Logansport with Rev. Alfred Gerni officiating.

Burial was in Mt. Hope Cemetery at Logansport - WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 14, 1964 Culver citizen
