Milton Roth Cline

Milton Roth Cline, second son of Milon Reno Cline and Elizabeth Eldora Flagg Cline, was born on November 10, 1901 in the Village of Maxinkuckee. He attended school there until his family moved to Culver where he graduated from high school. He worked for his father as a young man and in 1925 began a career with the Culver Post Office. He was the first village mail carrier. His first route was in the south part of town and very few people had mail boxes but in less than a week most homes had provided them.

After carrying mail for seven years he was promoted to subsitute clerk, then to clerk of highest grade and longevity. Cline served as Culver 's secretary of the local boad of Civil service examiner for nearly 20 years. He conducted examinations for local postions and other offices such as entrance to the United States Mimlitary and Naval Academies.

Roth, his parents called both their sons by their middle names, married Mary Catherine Tracy in April, 1930. She was a beauty operator before their children were born. Mary was born in Argos . Their son son, Stanley Milton was born June 22, 1935;. He graduated from Culver High in 1953 and attneded Phillips University School of Music and later was auditioned for the U.S. Air FOrce Band where he served in Washington D. C. He died on January 2, 1960 after being struck by a druken driver.

Sandra Kay graduated from Culver High School in 1954. She went to Methodist Hospital School of Nursing and graduated in 1957. She later went to Kingston, Jamaica and returned to the states after her brother was killed. Sandra worked at Memorial Hospital in SOuth Bend and was married to Harvey Lee Phillips in June, 1961. They had two children: Rebecca Sue and David Lee.

Roth's ability for writing took over after he retired. He attended classes at Ancilla College and also many work shops. Many of his articles were published in the South Bend Michianna Magazine, Guideposts, and Saturday Evening Post.

When the school lunch program opened at Culver High School, Mary became manager and worked for nine years. Later she became the food supervisor at Culver Military Academy where she worked for 12 years.

Roth and Mary were both active in the Methodist Church. Each served on the Board of Trustees, Sunday school classes and Mary sang in the choir for 25 years.

Roth died on April 11, 1977 of congestive heart failure. - Mary Cline. -Marshall county History, 1986

      Sandra Kay (Cline) Phillips, 78, passed away May 20, 2015, at Camellia Gardens of Life Care Nursing Home in Thomasville.

      She was born on September 15, 1936, in Culver, Indiana, to the late Milton Roth and Mary Catherine (Tracy) Cline and had lived in Thomasville for 38 years.

      Ms. Phillips was a childhood member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Culver, IN, and a 1954 graduate of Culver Community High School.

      In 1957, she graduated from Methodist Hospital School of Nursing in Indianapolis, IN, as a three-year diploma nurse. She retired in 1990, after 33 years of nursing in Jamaica, Indiana, Florida and Georgia.

      In Thomasville, she worked at John D. Archbold Memorial Hospital, as well as serving as Director of Nursing at both Hospitality Care Center and Glenn-Mor Nursing Home.

      She was a member of Morningside United Methodist Church, where she enjoyed singing in the choir. She also enjoyed doing crafts, sewing, and historic preservation.

      She is survived by a daughter, Rebecca (Phillips) Hancock of Thomasville; a son and daughter-in-law, David and Kristine Phillips of Suwanee, and three grandchildren: Virginia Hancock of Thomasville, Davis Hancock of Yulee, FL; and Mary Katharine Phillips of Suwanee; as well as several cousins. She was preceded in death by an older brother, Stanley Milton Cline.

      A Memorial Service will be held at 3:00 p.m., on Sunday, May 24, at Morningside United Methodist Church, 2207 Smith Avenue, Thomasville, with the Rev. Allen Hartsfield officiating.

      A graveside service and burial will be at Masonic Cemetery in Culver, IN, next week, under the direction of Odom Funeral Home, 104 E. Lakeshore Drive, Culver, IN.

      In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Wesley United Methodist Church, 511 School Street, Culver, IN, in Ms. Phillips’ name.
