Frank E. Gates established Homecroft as residential district in 1923. Frank Gates and
his son Olive were partners, whose firm (Frank E. Gates Real Estate Company had
developed subdivisions in Ohio and Michigan as well as Indiana. It was established as
part of the trend toward suburban development not only in Indianapolis, but also
across the nation. Homecroft was not developed around any industrial site or
particular attraction yet it has gained National Register listing because of its
association with events that have made a significant contribution to the broad patterns
of our history [located about four and one-half miles south of downtown beside Madison
Avenue (the south leg of the Michigan Road of settlement times)]. Speedway represents
this pattern as well, but is unique because of its stated purpose to become a “horseless city.”

Frank E. Gates, 4525 Central, who died yesterday in Methodist Hospital, carried his
business acumen into his church activities, for church was a vital factor in his life.
He was interested in seeing that his church was run on a sound financial basis, and
that its office was operated in a businesslike manner.
He was a member of North Methodist [Church. Life resident of Indianapolis,
Mr. Gates was the son of Oliver and Mary E. Gates.
The oldest active realtor in Indianapolis, he entered the real estate business in 1888.
Although he had been in impaired health two years, he had gone to his office at 916
Fletcher Trust Building every week.
When he entered realty, Mr. Gates was employed by Charles W. Gorsuch, real estate broker,
and after that was associated with the A. Metzger agency. Later he was assistant
secretary of the old German-American Trust Co., before it merged with the Fletcher Trust.
Co. At the time of his death he was a director of the Fletcher Trust Co.
In 1913, he formed his own company, the Frank E. Gates Real Estate Co. When his son,
Oliver F. Gates, who survives, went into business with him in 1922, the firm name, was
changed to Frank Gates & Son.
Mr. Gates, in his boyhood days, was one of the first carriers of The Indianapolis News.
He distributed papers in the old Irish Hill neighborhood.
Years ago, Mr. Gates took an active part in the campaign for a city manager form of
government.
He was a charter member of the Indianapolis Real Estate Board and served two terms as
its president. Only last week he attended a meeting of the board of directors to vote
in its election.
He was a strong opponent of the slum-clearance project because of the added tax load.
Interested in art and music, Mr. Gates was a member of the Art Association of
Indianapolis and the Ensemble Music Society.
He owned a cottage at Lake Maxinkuckee, and was a member er of the Maxinkuckee Yacht
Club.
Affable and mild-mannered, but persuasive in his business deals, Mr. Gates specialized
in subdivisions, and had developed the Homecroft and Forest Manor additions here, as
well as $ at Columbus, O., and Anderson.
Mr. Gates was a member of Ancient Landmarks Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite and Murat Shrine.
His wife, Bertha M. Gates, died in 1949. They had been married 53 years. A sister, Emma
Knight, died last year at the age of 91.
Surviving, besides the son, are a daughter, Miss Charlotte E. Gates, and four
grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Kirby Mortuary, with burial in Crown Hill

Mrs. Gates to Be Buried Thursday
Funeral services for Mrs. Bertha M. Gates, 76, wife of Frank E. Gates, charter member
and former president of the Indianapolis Real Estate Board, will be held Thursday at
2 p. m. in the Kirby Mortuary.
Burial will be in Crown Hill Cemetery. Mrs. Gates died yesterday in her home, 4525 N.
Meridian St.
A life resident of Indianapolis, she was a member of a pioneer Indianapolis family.
Her father, Frederick C. Sanders, owned a brick kiln at Churchman Ave.. site of the
present Bert S. Gadd Funeral Home.
She was a member of the North Methodist Church and its Woman's Society of Christian
Service, the Woman's Department Club, Indianapolis Art Association, the White Cross
Guild and the Ensemble Music Society of Indianapolis.
Survivors, besides the husband, are a daughter, Miss Charlotte and a son, Oliver
Indianapolis; three brothers. Henry C. Sanders, Indianapolis; Fred W. Sanders, Beach,
