Lake Maxinkuckee Its Intrigue History & Genealogy Culver, Marshall, Indiana

Rassner

My grandmother, Mary Ann Rassner, bought two lake front cottages of Lake Maxinkuckee at the turn of the century.

Her home was at Peru, as was our family, David H. and Margery Ellen Rassner. She bought them during the time of the popular assembly grounds in Culver, south of Davis Street. We spent a great part of our summer in one cottage and my aunt and her family in the other cottage.

Later, my father bought the "Cherry Villa" cottage, a larger one with inside plumbing, a fireplace, and a furnace. It had belonged to a Judge Winfield of Logansport. It was located the first cottage around the bay from the depot on the west side of Lake Maxinkuckee.

As soon as school was out my father brought Mother and us four children here and we stayed until Labor Day. My father came up on Wednesday afternoons and weekends. He loved to fish and hunt.

My father, David H. Rassner, was born in Peru April 27, 1876, and Mother, Margery Ellen (Guynn) Rassner was born February 12, 1877. I had three brothers: Russell W., born November 9, 1902, Virgil M. born October 26, 1911 and Donald D. born September 1916. I Beatrice Jane, was born May 25, 1909.

The Vandalia trains ran right behind the cottage. There was a long frieght train about dawn every morning and by the time the caboose was passing, it would awaken me and I saw the most beautiful sunrises coming up over the east shore of the lake. We loved the lake and felt it was there for us to conquer. It offered many challenges. As we children grew older each summer presented new challenges.

For several years when our friends visited us for a few dyas or a week, a hike around the lake was planned. We followed the lake shore where possible. It was a rule that a path be kept open between the cottages .

One Sunday evening a friend and I were playing around the bay in my father's small duck boat. A young fellow who owned a fast speed boat had been taking passengers for rides from the depot pier. He saw us, and showing off, made waves around use, nearly capsizing us.

Each year the lake presented evern greater challenges. My two brothers, Russell and Virgil, and I swam across the lake, followed by a boat, from Cherry Villa and coming out near the Indiana Boat House on the east side. Our brother, Don, wa still too small to accompany us, but delighted in hunting turtles, especially around the two old suken launches near the outlet. We had lots of good trutle meals.

The following year Russell and Virgil tied ropes from our canoe around their waists and towed it. I swan free. We started at the boat house swimming pier and came out somewhere at the south end. There were very few cottages down there then, mostly wooded area. I remember the beautiful log cabin that Russell Fisher built on the south end made of tamarac logs, and he called it "Airly Days".

A while later, September 4, 1929, I married that "young fellow with the fast speed boat:, John F. Bigley.

My swimming adventures concluded when I "Baby-sitted" with our six grandchildren. - Beatrice (Rasner) Bigley. History of Marshall County Indiana Sesquicentennial 1836 - 1986 -, Taylor Publishing Co., 1986, Publication # 357 of 1422, Marshall County Historical Society pg. 352
