Was located on the near the end of East Shore Lane not far from the Bay View the Gompf's owned three cottages. One was used as their personal residence; the other as the kitchen and dinning room and the other cottage was divided up into 8 to 10 rooms.

Fred Gompf Suffers Stroke of Apoplexy

Fred Gompf, aged 85, passed away Tuesday evening, March 23, at his home three miles west of Argos on State Road No. 10, following an illness of one and a half years. A stroke of appoplecy was given as the immediate cause of his death.

Born in Indianapolis, Jan 31, 1853, he was the son of Christopher and Mair Gompf.

For the past 13 years he was a resident of the community, going there from Culver.

He had lived on the East Side of the lake and was a care taker of cottages .

Previously he had operated a brick manufacturing plant in Indianapolis

On November 9, 1913 he was married to Harriet Sheets, who survives.

Other survivors include a brother, Harry Gompf, a sister Lizzie Gompf and a niece and nephew, Mr. and Mrs. Herman Hunt, all of Indianapolis.

Funeral services were held in Argos Thursday afternoon with Rev. Ernest Treber of the Congregational Christain church officating.

DEATH OF MRS. GOMPE EVERYTHING INDICATES THAT SHE COMMITTED SUICIDE.

She Had Been Subject to Mental Trouble for Some Time-Detaiis of the Case.

Mrs. Kate Gompf, who lived with her husband, Frederick Gompf, a member of the Home Lumber Company, at 151½ Cross drive, Woodruff Place, was found dead in her home yesterday morning.

As nearly as could be determined she had been dead for at least twenty-four hours. Her death was caused by asphyxiation, which, according to the verdict of Coroner Brayton, was due to her own act.

She was last seen Saturday evening, and the finding of her dead body yesterday morning was because her "husband was fearful that a prediction made by Captain Dawson on Friday would be realized.

Mr. and Mrs. Gompf were married about fifteen years ago.

After their marriage Mr. Gompf learned that his wife's mother was an inmate of the Insane Hospital and had been n there about twenty years. He learned that she had been sent to the asylum as violently insane when his wife was only a few months old and that the latter had never known anything of her mother and believed for years that her aunt who had reared her was her mother.

During the early years of their married life symptoms of Mrs. Gompf's impaired mind were noticed by her husband. The signs appeared only at long intervals and of short duration.

At the time of the birth of their irst child Mrs. Gompf became somewhat violent and threatened to kill the infant as well as her husband.

The child died within a few days and her mental aberration increased.

After several months' treatment at her home she apparently recovered. Later Dr. W. B. Fletcher was called to attend her regularly.

Occasionally the symptoms of violent insanity would show, and in order to keep her mind occupied Mr. Gompf built a new house on Davidson street.

Mrs. Gompf was an excellent housekeeper and took great pride in their home, but soon tired of the new place, and in accordance with her desires a new and more pretentious home was built in Woodruff Place. Occupied with the care of this new and larger house her mind seemed to improve, and until recently she was rational. Several times during the last few months her mind gave way, and in her moments of aberration she threatened to kill herself and her husband.

Nothing of a really violent nature was noticed in her acts until Friday last, when she, as the couple sat at breakfast, arose from her chair and began without warning throwing dishes from the table to the floor.

Her husband ran from the house and went to the lumber office on Michigan street, where he called police headquarters. District Patrolman Haley was sent to the house with Mr. Gompf, and reported that he found Mrs. Gompf quiet and engaged in household duties. He thought there was little danger.

Mr. Gompf then visited police headquarters in person and asked Captain Dawson for advice in the matter. He was referred to Police Surgeon Christian, who advised him to stay away from home for a few days and give his wife time to rest and occupy her mind with other things.

Mr. Gompf had told Dr. Christian that one of his wife's delusions was that he habitually associated with other women.

Mr. Gompf returned to headquarters and told Captain Dawson of the plan proposed by Dr. Christian. Captain Dawson, who would not advise him before, said it would not be right to do such a thing, as in his absence she might take her own life.

He advised the employment of some one to live in the house and watch the actions of Mrs. Gompf and protect the husband while he slept from any violent act which Mrs. Gompf might undertake. The advice of Dr. Christian was, however, followed, and Mr. Gompf slept at the homes adjacent on either side Saturday and Monday nights. He kept watch of the house a great deal, and last saw his wife about the house Saturday evening. One light was burning continually, and yesterday morning, fearing something was wrong, he called at police headquarters and asked for some one to accompany him to his home. Detective Bray was sent, and after breaking in the door of Mrs. Gompf's room her lifeless body, partially dressed and upon the bed well covered with bedclothes, was found. The condition of the body indicated death had come twenty-four or more hours before.

All of the gas vents throughout the house, with the exception of the one in her bedroom, were found open. There was one open window. The house was filled with gas, and particularly the room in which the body was found. This was tightly closed, and all of the gas in that room must have found its way there under the door through a large space there.

Everything indicated that her death was due to suicide, but Captain Kinney, thinking the case was one needing investigation, went at once to the house. He found the house immaculately clean, everything in its place, and not the slightest evidence of any struggle. The door to Mrs. Gompf's bedroom was locked with a key from the inside, and there was nothing which would even suggest death due to the act of another. Depositions of a Most Compromis ing Character Read at the Trial Yesterday--Says Wife Was Frisky.

The trial of Frederick Gompf, vs. wife for divorce, which was venued from Marion county to Putnam county, and is now on trial at Greencastle, is proving most sensational.

Gompf, who is the head of the newly organized Brazil Face Brick which purchased and reconstructed the old plant of the Sheridan Brick Works, has been making his home in Brazil for over a year, and made so many firm friends here, the, sympathy of Brazilians is with him in his present suit.

We have found Mr. Gompf one of the broadest and finest citizens that any could desire.

Speaking of the case and the testimony and depositions of yesterday at the trial, the Greencastle Banner of last evening says:
The divorce case of Gompf VS. Gompf was called in Circuit Court Tuesday morning. The case was venued here from Morgan county, where was sent from the Marion county court, where the case was originally filed.

The case has been in the courts since last summer and several of the witnesses could not be here and depositions taken from them were read open court.

In opening the case attorney for plaintiff made a statement saying evidence of the plaintiff would show that the defendant was guilty cruel and inhuman treatment and also of adultery both in Indianapolis and at the summer cottage at Lake Maxinkuckee.

The attorney the defense said that they would show by their evidence that the plaintiff in the case was guilty of cruel and inhuman treatment and that the plaintiff discharged the housekeeper at the direction of the defendant and that after that the defendant was compelled to take care the nine rcom house and as a result the health of the defendant was impaired, causing her to be under the care of a physician for two years; that the plaintiff agreed to pay the defendant seven dollars a week and she was to keep the table and also clothe herself out of this money.

A deposition was read from C. I. Slifer a shoe buyer at the New York store in Indianapolis. In this examination the witness was asked about an Elk pin, the plaintiff alleged the defendant gave Slifer at one time. The witness denied ever receiving an Elk pin from Mrs.Gompf.

The deposition of Chas. Lauer, a jeweler of Indianapolis, said Mrs. Gompf purchased an Elk pin of him and at the time said she was buying for her "best fellow" and at the same time she cautioned the jeweler not to tell Fred. The deposition of Mr. Lauer said he had known Mr. and Mrs. Gompf and at times Mrs. Gompf did not treat her husband like a wife should treat a husband.

The deposition of C. M. Jones, assistant credit man at the New York store was read. The deposition of H. A. Van Ansdel was read. Mr. Van Ansdel is a traveling salesman out of Indianapolis. The deposition was read and the questions asked were along the line that he was intimate with Mrs. Gompf. He said that he was at the Gompf cottage on Maxinkuckee Saturday and Sunday of three different weeks. Was at the Gompf cottage with Mrs. Gompf and Mrs. Fullenwi'der. He said he did not see Mr. Gompf at any time he was there. They were in bathing at different times and pictures were shown of Van Ansdel and Mrs. Gompf taken between the two cottages at Maxinkuckee. Van Ansdel answered in the negative when he was asked he did not meet Mrs. Gompf at hotels in Logansport, in Kokomo and other places in the north part of the state. Also to the writing of letters to Mrs. Fullenwider and they were turned over to Mrs. Gompf. He also said that he saw Mrs. Gompf at least once a week in Indianapolis after they had separated and had ited her at different hotels. He answered no to the question asked that if he and Mrs. Gompf did not register at one of the hotels as Mr. and Mrs. Van Ansdel of Chicago.

Divorcee Marries Man Named at Hearing of Suit.

Five days after she had been divorced Mrs. Louise M. Gompf yesterday obtained a license to marry Hugh A. VanAusdel.

According to reports from Greencastle. Mrs. Gompf was divorced from her husband, Fred Gompf. in Putnam County last Monday, the divorce being to granted him.

The mentioned name of VanAusdel prominently was in suit and his connection with the case is said to have been responsible for Mrs. Gompf being not allowed alimony.

In the application for a marriage license VanAusdel and Mrs. Gompf both gave the address of 511 North Illinois street. They could not found there last night.

VanAusdel said be in his application it was his first marriage.

Mr. Gompf is said by his former neighbors to have left Indianapolis.

Born at Dalton, Ill., she came to Lafayette in 1878 with her parents.
